Folding@Home : Team XPS

I've taken Aivas47a's idea and run with it. If you're interested in joining this team, all you have to do is put the team number in your configuration screen.
Team number: 80856
Link to the download

UPDATE 5/3/08:

When this team was started, all of our members were completely new to this project. We fumbled around for a while, trying out many (if not all) of the different client options. We've, collectively, learned quite a bit about the various clients now, and would like to offer some helpful tips for those of you who are just getting started.

First, let me stress that this team has just one purpose; to help the scientists at Stanford University research the causes, and hopefully, the cures to todays terrible diseases. We can only do this as a team! There is not one individual on this team that is more valued or “higher ranking” than any other. We are all contributing towards the same goal. We ask that you treat the other members with respect. Many of us have become friends, and will engage in friendly “trash-talking”, but it's all in good fun. We all just want to do everything we can to get Stanford the results they need.

OK, now on with the helpful tips:

  1. Post any questions or ideas in this forum. We have some experience on this team at this point, so take advantage of it. There is no such thing as a dumb question. Every member of this team has, at some point, run into a glitch or two. I guarantee that if you have a question about folding, one of your teammates will have the answer or all of us will go looking for it.

  2. Don't be discouraged by a “point gap” between yourself and your teammates. Every member is vital to this projects success. Whether you contribute 1 point per day, or 20,000 points per day, your contribution is valued and recognized. Remember, some of us have been at this for a while and have racked up some points...so will you! :)

  3. Try to get the most out of your PC by using the best client for your machine.

(Note: I will be listing the Windows clients below but there are equivalent clients for both Linux and Mac users)

    1. If you're using a single core processor, you should use one these 2 clients:

      1. Windows 2000/XP/Vista Graphical client 5.03

      2. Windows NT/2000/XP/Vista text-only console 5.04

    2. If you're using a dual core or quad core processor, you should use this client:

      1. Windows 2000/XP/Vista SMP client console version 5.91

We have detailed installation instructions for these clients (and the Linux equivalents) at our other forums, RampantSpeculation.com. Just go to the Introduction to Folding board. Or, if you're having issues, just post it here and we'll walk you through it.

And finally, when you join the team, please help us advertise. Copy and paste this into your forum signature:

Just change my name (highlighted in red) to the name you used when you configured your client.

One of our great teammates, Rafael Polit, made this desktop background for the rest of the team.

Re: Folding@Home : Team XPS

Well it was on all night and right now it is at 2382 of 5000 frames Completed.  I remember once joining Seti-at-home, and that was slow too.
But it does not appear to be taking too much cpu power.  So, I am ok with it sofar.

Peace

Re: Folding@Home : Team XPS

I just signed on to the team... username LookUp4Help.  All of my PCs have been a part of the United Devices project for over 6 years now working on medical research.  Time for a change so this is my new team home for the next who-knows-how-many-years.  Since my fleet of silicone stays running 24/7 it makes sense to use those idling CPU cycles for something worthwhile.

Re: Folding@Home : Team XPS

I take it you don't need a XPS to join the team?   Have a XPS400 but don't use it online.   Would be more than willing to join with PC in Sig.

Re: Folding@Home : Team XPS

Don't know if any of you are keeping track, but our team has gone from a rank of 74,000 to being ranked about 22,000(th?). That's a pretty good leap in just a few days! Now if only I could compete with PG's PS3 :smileymad: ! Bub...how're you coming along? I am working on my first >5MB file now....and they take forever! 250 frames is going to end up taking about 30 hours!

Of course.  I just use my PS3 right now.  I think the PS3 was made for this.  I will add my XPS soon enough.

Re: Folding@Home : Team XPS

The PS3 seems to be designed with project in mind (since it has a limited number of decent games..lol). I think it's an unfair advantage PG :smileywink: . Did you notice that they have versions that'll use ATI GPU's in a PC, but not nVidia? I would love to put my GPU's to use on this.

Hi,

I'm just a lurker who has been following the 700 motherboard issue. When I saw this thread I decided it was a worthy cause to support.

Re: Folding@Home : Team XPS

SO I put this on my XPS and it is VERY different than the PS3.  The visuals are awful compared to the PS3.  I see what you guys are talking about with the frames.  Mine is doing 5000 and it will not finish for a long while.  The PS3 does a full set in about 8 hours.  I just can't leave it on as much.  I will probably keep it running on the XPS during the day and run the PS3 for a few hours at night(at least until it cools down).  Glad to see we can all band to gether to attempt to help.

That's what it's all about PG! I'm a little surprised that we didn't get more people!? Oh well, maybe they're spending too much time gaming. I won't blame them for that!

After my 2nd WU of 5000 frames finishes, I am thinking about switching to a different client. This standard one just doesn't play nice with a couple of my programs I am running.

I don't know if I want to try the client only and make a service out of it or try the new Beta where I can use all 4 cores.
