Re: upgrading dell e520 stock graphics card and power supply unit.

Before any suggestions, what are your limits as far as cost for a video card  ?  You may not need an upgrade to the power supply for many cards since your 305 watter will handle cards that suggest 400 or  slightly more to run a nice card.

Re: upgrading dell e520 stock graphics card and power supply unit.

Actually i wanted to upgrade to a 8800 GTX but i found out its not compatible with my rig as it occupies two slots.i,m please to hear that my PSU can handle graphics cards of up to 400 watts as the card i,m planning to get is a 7950 gt which i found out it only needs 350 watt PSU.By the way, is there any GPU,s out there which is compatible with my rig that is better than the 7950gt? Please advice, thanks.

Re: upgrading dell e520 stock graphics card and power supply unit.

Unknown what Operating system you have now.......

If you want the newest directx 10 games coming out, than you might want to consider the 8600 directx 10 cards that will fit, and work in your system, but the 7900 GT or 7950 GT and 7950 GX2 ( 7950 GX2 very hard to find and hope its not the very large version that won't fit ) are faster cards for windows xp and even Vista than the 8600 directx 10 card.  But to have directx 10 gaming you must also have Vista.  The games will still play well, except a few that are only for Vista, like Halo 2, if you still are using XP.   Unfortunately there are no good options in a directx 10 card in the single slot version at this time.

If you have Vista installed than consider a directx 10 card for future proofing the system and those directx 10 games coming out.

Re: upgrading dell e520 stock graphics card and power supply unit.

The 7950 GT is a single slot card, and that's good news for you, and its a very good performer as well.  Some other members have this card, and the 305 watter power supply.  Only issue you would have if you ever loaded up your system with additional drives, optical drives, and pci slot cards, than you might be forced to upgrade the power supply.  But, if its stock build with one hard drive, one dvd burner, and a sound card, you should be fine.

Dell underrates its power supply to read the mean average, and the peak is much higher.  In your case its around 400 watts or so.  The video card manufacture only suggests a 400 watter as a safety messure for those that over load their systems.  This is an ongoing questions for years now.

I had a stock 250 watter on my old Dell system, but the peak power was 345 watts.  I had both a 300 and 350 watter video card at one time, and no issues with black outs, freezes with the games.   You should be fine.   However, if you need to upgrade the p/s, than thats an easy thing to accomplish.  Just cost some bucks.

Good luck

You know you could get the 8600GT-DDR3 and get very similar performance, no need for molex connector piece and you get DX10 for some future proofing. You may even save some money.

Re: upgrading dell e520 stock graphics card and power supply unit.

I run 8600GT XXX on my E521 which is basically the same as the E520 with no issues on the stock psu.

Re: upgrading dell e520 stock graphics card and power supply unit.

Guy who is running the 8600GT with the E521, what revision power supply are u using. Is it A00 or higher (the revision is on the side of the powersupply on the sticker). If you could check that would be great, becasue i hada  8600GTS and it was blacking out ( was using a stock A00 powersupply in my E510), i thought it was a bad card but i am not sure anymore.

If you look farther up this board you will find your answer in the other 2 posts you made. Your card needs an additional connection to the psu.

Re: upgrading dell e520 stock graphics card and power supply unit.

If u buy a new case u can get a 8800 gtx the xtra space isnt actual taking a pci it is for the heatsink all u need is space above the pci[e] port and it will work. My sugestion is if u dont want a new case get a 8600 case it is shorter and will fit in one slot.

Re: upgrading dell e520 stock graphics card and power supply unit.

I am not asking if it uses a power lead, i owned one. I am asking what revision PSU do people with E5** computers use.
