Defective 2300MP projectors, bad batch?

Our company bought 2 new Dell 2300MP projectors in early January, and within 3 days they both stopped working. In both cases, everything was working fine, we turned off the lamp, left the projector sitting there, came back hours later, tried to power on, and the lamp never came on. The fan didn't power on either. After about a minute the orange Lamp light came on. We tried unplugging and everything else we could think of, including verifying that the lamp was still working (we stuck the lamp in another identical projector, and it worked fine).

Dell exchanged both of the projectors for us, and they were both working fine for a couple of days, but today one of the projectors had the same problem. Dell is exchanging this 3rd projector for us.

From what I can tell, nobody is treating the projectors harshly or unplugging them before they cool down or anything like that. We have an older Dell projector and we have never had any problems with it.

When the 2300MP projectors are working I really like them. I just don't know how reliable they are. I was beginning to think that there was a bad batch, but I searched and didn't see any other complaints about this on this forum, so now I'm not sure what to think. Our team of software developers and testers can't believe how many problems we are having.

We also have 2 Dell 3200 MP and they do the same thing. I changed with new bulbs plays great for 5 minutes, then starts flickering then color goes awry then it shuts off and the Lamp light comes on. And this is with new bulbs have tried 4 new bulbs and they all do the same. I think its time to start looking for a new projector provider that supports their product

Re: Defective 2300MP projectors, bad batch?

I am on my third projector with the same problems discribed above.  I sounds like this projector has a design problem.  What is the problem?  Is there an effort to fix this or can we change models or what?

Re: Defective 2300MP projectors, bad batch?

My company ordered the Dell 2300MP projector 2 weeks ago. We received it on 31th januari 2005 and it seems to work fine. We did presentation for 2 hours and then switch off the projector with the remote control. It powered down, but we were not able to power it up. After we removed the mains and connected the mins again we tried to switch on the project. Nothing happened. After appox. 90 seconds the orange lamp LED came up but still the projector stayed dead. I called Dell services in the Netherlands and they immediatly ordered a new projector for me.  I received that projector yesterday 8th februari 2005 and switched it on. It worked. We did a presentations this morning and everything seemed to work fine. After the presentation we switched of the projector with the remote control and guess what, it couldn't not be powered on again. After disconnecting/connecting the mains and trying to switch on the projector the orange Lamp LED came on again after 90 seconds.

I called Dell again and have been called back that they are working on it.

In my opinion this batch of Dell 2300MP must have some sort of sofware flaw, and I am glad I found this forum and I am not the only one with this problem.

Re: Defective 2300MP projectors, bad batch?

We too were impressed with the features and price of the 2300MP.  Unfortunately, our new projector would not turn on after our first test run of approximately 1 hour.  They shipped us a replacement.  It ran fine the first time for 2 hours.  Two days later, it ran fine for another hour.  Then we tried to turn it on a third time.  Nothing but the Lamp light indicator after waiting for a minute.  Now, a rather testy tech support fellow says all he can do is ship us a third one.  He cannot provide any information on the liklihood that the third one will be any different than the first two.  Worse, he seems to have no interest in explaining what the problem might be and/or why it seems to be such a common occurance.  I don't know whether to bail at this point or hang in there and let them keep sending us projectors.

And, there seems to be a deafening silence from Dell in this forum regarding this particular, repeatedly reported, problem.  What's up Dell?

(Continued)

Yesterday I have send an E-Mail to Dell and asked them what I should do with the 2 malfunctioning projectors. Should I not be sending them back?

The replay was "not to take any action now, because the second and third line (??) are busy with finding a solution for the problem, as for now just wait on things to come".

Re: Defective 2300MP projectors, bad batch?

Their response to me today was that they couldn't send the 3rd one until they got the UPS tracking number for the 1st one on it's way back (understandable).  But the tech support guy acted like this was a very rare anomoly and the only solution (outside of a refund) was to send a 3rd one.  I'd like them to tell me what the problem is and why sending a 3rd one will fix it but I think they simply don't know what the problem is.

Re: Defective 2300MP projectors, bad batch?

I too am about to call Dell Support for my third 2300mp projector, exact same symptoms...push power, projector makes some noise for a bit then the lamp failure light comes on.

Unplug the projector, power again, nada, unplug, power again...repeat 10-30 times and the projector will finally come on and keep working for the rest of the day...just don't EVER let it shut down and be sure to turn off power saving!

Oh both projectors (original and replacement) also periodically (once every few weeks) smell like someone melted an entire box of crayones inside them...then the entire office comes to see whats on fire.

I have this 2300mp professionally mounted upside down from the ceiling...and attached to an Inspiron 8000 laptop and docking station and a 25ft quality VGA cable.  Should any of that matter??

Re: Defective 2300MP projectors, bad batch?

I don't think the cable or the mounting configuration matters.  Ours demonstrated the irritating behavior just sitting on a table with the basic VGA cable between it and a laptop.  I didn't have the patience to try the restart 20-30 times though so I never did get it to come back up after the first failure.

Re: Defective 2300MP projectors, bad batch?

HEY DELL!!! YOU HAVE SOME SPLAINING TO DO!

I am on my 3rd 2300MP projector and Dell is now sending me the fourth.  Same symptoms on all three.  I am now almost 3 weeks behind on delivering this technology to our production office and it is time for Dell to step up and take responsibility for this manufacturing flaw.

I want Dell to put manufacturing of this product on hold until the flaw is found and corrected before ever sending out another 2300MP.  And I want Dell to send every customer who has been affected by this a new 4100MP projector to satisfy their projector customer base.  It is obviously they jumped into this market to compete and make money...  However, they can't make money if every other unit they send out is bad and they will start losing sales by not satisfying their customers.

Dell, for me, this is your 4th and final opportunity to make this right for me.  You send me a 4100MP that works and we will call it even.  Otherwise, I am shipping everything back and taking my business elsewhere.  Not to mention the bad pub I will give your projectors to all my colleagues and friends.

Sincerely,

Re: Defective 2300MP projectors, bad batch?

hello  all,
ive owned three projectors in the past, Sharp, Toshiba, Infocus and now a dell 2300mp i just got it about a week ago, but i have the same problem. i just got done chating with a rep and she said that "they are working on it" and the new batches will not have the same problems.  we shall see.
also, something else she said was when i get my new projector is, im supposed to take the bulb out and just send back the projector.  thats pretty cool.  i now have a spare lamp....we all know how important that is. it makes me feel somehow a lot better about the whole thing.  like someone gave me a $350 present. yay!!!
anyway i thought that might be a lil' good news in a  trying time.

Re: Defective 2300MP projectors, bad batch?

Got my 3rd one in...so far it's been ok.  Wish I'd kept my other two bulbs!!  Its cut off twice in the middle of using it so far, but that only happens ~5mins after it's resumed from power saving mode and it has come back both times.  We'll see what happens.  I also noticed the fan now seems to run continuously when in power saving mode, but if that saves my bulb I don't care.

I initially only bought a 1yr warranty but think I'm going to extend it to a 3yr when I get closer to it being gone.
