I have a PowerEdge R610 which is about 4 months old. During that time we have seen four instances (two this week) where eth0 or eth1 (the only NICs we're using) will stop communicating. I found with eth1 (which is connected by cat6 to another machine directly) I can do "/sbin/ifconfig eth1 down" followed by "/sbin/ifconfig eth1 up" and that gets it going again. With eth0 however I found I had to reboot the machine to get it talking again.

In /var/log/messages these are the only things logged (at the start of the outage, through to when I reset the interface):

I read that the DRAC was once an optional feature when ordering a PowerEdge 2650 from Dell. This leads to my question: If I buy another Dell riser card that is a drop-in replacement for the 2650 that does not have ESM4, will I be able to install my NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200?

During bios boot screens the machine will not respond to any keyboard input. After listing drives, in fact, it reports a 'Keyboard Failure' and then executes the boot loader and, as stated, the keyboard works fine once the OS takes over.

The machine was setup on an old PS2 kvm with a tripplite PS2-USB converter. After this issue began I have tried three different USB keyboards in most of the available USB ports and still have the boot screen keyboard problem.

I need to install an OS to this machine and it is impossible without accessing the bios or boot menu.

I cannot find any bios updates for this machine.

Has anyone seen this problem? Anyone have a solution?

For want of a keyboard the OS was lost.

I've found the following part #'s for the DRAC IV cards, and I'm curious if they are all the same product and if any of them will work:

Both have 2 PC Express Broadcom 5708 single port additional cards apart from the normal dual port onboard card.

The link and activity LEDs on both 5708 PCI cards are pulsing in a set pattern - they both pulse amber 12 times and then a short delay before they repeat the pattern. This happens if active network cables are plugged in or not and if the cards are enabled or disabled through Windows 2003 Enterprise Server which they are both running.

The 5708 cards appear to operate normally on the network apart from the flashing LEDs and running diagnostics over them including those in the BACS pass successfully.

The other strange thing is that both IT Assistant and DSET report the firmware as 5.0.4, but any attempt to update to the latest firmware 5.0.9 says that they are already running 5.0.9! Also Windows reports the driver version as 5.0.13.0 whereas IT Assistant and DSET report the driver as 5.0.15.0!

Has anyone seen the above and can tell me what the flashing LEDs mean?

I am considering buying a poweredge 6400 to use as a Windows Home Server (SBS 2003)

The server itself appears to be in good nick, but does not have any os installed and no systems cd's with it.

I understand that poweredge servers are suppose to come with a cd to boot from which guide you through raid setup and the os install ect.

Is it possible to download this from dell or set all this up without the cd?

Also, are there any other problems I need to consider before commiting to buy?

I have setup normal PC based os's many times before including hardware raid, but am not too sure how dell openmanage integrates with the poweredge servers.

I have a PE 2900 5130 single CPU system

I am planning on moving to ESXi and would like more CPU power.

Whats the most powerfull CPU I can replace the 5130 with?

I was thinking a E5450 quad core 3 GHZ. The spec is the same socket, bus speed and similar power use as the 5130. I think this should give me double the processing ability to run multiple VM's on this machine. Ideally i will go for a pair of CPU once I souce a heatsink for the empty CPU socket.

Is this correct thinking? I see PE2900 advertised with those chips installed but I am wondering if its a different / revised main board in those.

I have a Poweredge T410 that runs just fine. I have it in a separate room in my apartment and the noise isn't that bad. There is only one source of noise and that is the 120mm fan in the back. I'm reading the values from iDRAC6 Express that the fan RPM is 2.640 and the temperature on the motherboard is 27 degrees Celcius, that seems pretty normal, right? The BIOS setting for the Power Management is set to OS Controlled, with minimum power except for memory performance.

Now, I know that the room temperature is vital when it comes to fan RPM's, if the outside air is cool, that means lower RPM's.
My question is if it's possible to lower the fan speed even more, perhaps down to 2.000 RPMs or lower. I'm running Windows Server 2008 R2 straight out-of-the-box.

Are the default drivers taking care of power and fan management in an optimized way? Should I download the Dell drivers, will they make a difference for the fan RPM? I don't see anything mentioned about what drivers controls the system fans.

Thanks!

Errors E0780 Missing CPU 1 & 2 and E0212 Volt GB0 1.8V FP

I have an interesting situation. Seems to be a voltage problem somewhere. However, the first one, E0780, doesn't seem to be an issue. BIOS sees the processors, it passes POST and boots right into Windows. I tried clearing the NVRAM which didn't do anything. I tried reseating both processors and VRMs. These are original. The current BIOS version is A20. Any thoughts?
As said in the subject, my SC440 freeze when loading any OS .

I tried to boot from :

* Dell Raid add-on card with Linux on Raid 1 sata drives (worked fine before) : stop after Grub load.

* Brand new sata drive (single with raid card removed), trying to install XP or Vista from CD : boot from CD is OK, install start but stops quickly on Windows logo (computer must be rebooted).

* Single sata drive with XP already installed : freeze just before loading desktop.

BUT :

* I can boot from Hirens boot cd and use any testing software

* I can boot from USB key and use Dell diagnostic utilites : all tests passed (used it twice).

I checked the RAM, switched modules, etc...

Any advice or suggestions welcomed !

I like to run Win Server 2008 64 bits on the server.. To do this I understand I need to upgrade the processor to a newer Xeon 64 bits version.

1) Anyone know if this is possible ?

2) Do I also need to upgrade the bios ?

3) Do Dell sell "refurnished" parts like a Xeon FC-mPGA4 package processor ?

Best Regards,

I am trying to install Windows XP Professional to a Poweredge 1800. The disks are of course SCSI and there is a RAID controller installed.

I am able to run the Windows installation, load the SCSI/RAID drivers manually from a USB floppy drive, however I am hitting a problem.

The drivers load successfully, the disks are successfully formatted, then when the Windows Setup files begin to copy I am receiving a prompt to insert the floppy disk containing the SCSI/RAID drivers.

Could this be because I am using an external USB floppy and that Windows just doesn't like it? Is there a facility on the motherboard to support a IDE floppy disk?

Thanks in advance.
