P2600 cycles through post

I have a P2600 and I have a THIRD replacement motherboard in there, and still the same problem.

When I boot, the post displays up for maybe half a second then goes away. My system stays on, blue light is displayed, no warnings, all drives are displayed on Channel A&B. i.e. there does not appear to be any problems that the system is aware of.

Any suggestions?

P4600 - No microcode update loaded for processor 1 and 2

Hi There:
I just replaced a P4600 media bay that is set up as a Raid 1 and has my windows server OS. All cables are connected correctly and tight. I use an anti-static apron so there was no chance that the motherboard got zapped.

When I rebooted, I got the following error from both processors:

"Warning! no microcode update loaded for processor 1 &2" (actually two messages - 1 for each processor)

I'd use Open Manage to load the bios, but if the processors won't start, what do I do?

Update: I swapped out the CPUs and I get the same message!!! The PERC3/DI shows all drives, and F2 shows the CPUs descriptions just fine.

Dear Forum,

I know there has been many people with this problem, however I have not been able to find how to solve this!

My computer boots up in MSDOS and fails to complete its boot...it asks me to go to use the previous working condition, safe start up etc and when I try to it comes up with the following;

Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause.

File: \Windows\system32\drivers\intelide.sys

Status: 0xc000000f

Info: Windows failed to load because a critical system driver is missing or corrupt

I used the Spyware Doctor program that most people have used to gain this problem................

I tried to use my reinstall disk but after pressing F8 it still will not start the disc...I have tried to no avail but it still will not work!!!

It allows me to go through MSDOS i.e. F\: etc but I do not know how to work MSDOS.....please can you help me before it costs me a fortune speaking on the telephoned to Microsoft to remedy the fault??????????

I have a XPS Gen 3 that has BIOS version A04. I see that the current version is A07 and would like to update. My question is, do I have to update from A04 to A05 to A06 and then to A07? Or can I go from A04 directly to A07?

The unit has an operational cdrom drive but no dvd.

Dell PE 860 Always boots to PXE - HELP !!?

Hi All,

Im having a nightmware with some new PE860 and PE1950 servers that insist on booting to PXE no matter what i define in the BIOS.

I disable in the boot sequence NOT to boot from the Ethernet cards

I disabled in each Ethernet card so it will be Enabled WITHOUT PXE

No matter what i do i can see on the right top of the screen "Attempt PXE boot"

and then i get an error that it cant find any PXE stuff and i should either press F1 to continue boot or F2 for bios Setup.

if i press F1 it continues to boot the OS (Windows or Linux).

This is INSANE...

ANy ideas??

PE2550 how to always start automatically after AC power on?

I have a few different machines running Linux, powered by a common UPS, and Network UPS Tools is set up to shutdown them safely when UPS battery is low, then shutdown the UPS itself. After AC power returns, the UPS starts again and I need all machines to start automatically, without pressing their power buttons. Many other machines have an option in the BIOS setup (what to do after AC power loss: turn on / stay off / last state). How do I set this in the Dell PE2550 server?

After a lot of searching, I've just found the Deployment Toolkit, version 1.4 (which appears to be the latest one before 2550 support was removed). According to the manual, what I need is "BIOSCFG --acpower on" and currently it is set to "last". I've made a FreeDOS boot floppy and copied BIOSCFG.EXE to it, then booted it. Unfortunately, "BIOSCFG --acpower" turns out to not be supported on this system, even though it should be supported according to the manual (which contains a list of options not supported by x5xx series, but acpower is not listed among them). I already have the latest BIOS and firmware. Is there any way to get around it?

Is there any (possibly undocumented, including hardware hacks if need be) way to do "--acpower on" on the 2550, do I need a different version of the Deployment Toolkit where it works, or is this simply not possible?

I guess I could try to change the Linux shutdown scripts to just halt without poweroff, then let it sit there until the UPS cuts off the power (then it should remember the last state and start again when the power is back), but I don't believe I have to do this on a server machine (I know some desktops and most laptops lack this feature, but servers are usually intended to run all the time). Also, is such AC power cutting (without ACPI poweroff first) safe to the RAID? (PERC3/Di with two disks in RAID-1.)

Any help would be much appreciated. Please excuse me if this has already been discussed before - I'm new here. Thanks!

PE T410 No POST/Boot after BIOS Update

Hi All

I have installed a BIOS Update on my new T410 from 1.0.5 to 1.1.5 update reported sucessful but system wont POST or Boot fans spin up and fron LCD report nothing but displays servcie tag. i can connect to iDRAC6 Enterprose and repot no problems but still list BIOS as 1.0.5 and console shows no display.

i have spoken to pro support and they have logged job to replace mainboard but was hopeing to "recover" the BIOS befor then.

BIOS in PowerEdge 500SC not detecting HardDrives

Setup:
We have a PowerEdge 500SC. Been running on the 20GB hard drive it came with for a while. Everything works fine, but have been running out of disk space recently, so we bought two new 60GB hard drives to setup a RAID 1 array to replace the old one.

Problems:
The BIOS will not fully detect CDROM drive (which came with the server), nor the two new Harddrives. As a result, the computer will only boot off of a floppy. The two new drives are both "Western Digital WD600BB-75CAA0 16.06V16"

Once booted off a floppy, we can read from the CDROM and read/write to both the hard drives. I was able to boot from a floppy, and install the OS off of the CD (RH7.3). I then moved the two hard drives to a different computer and booted off of them, and they worked fine (installation seems to have completed OK). However, since BIOS doesn't recognize them, it won't let us select them for the boot sequence.

I set the slots to AUTO, and it knows that they are there (because it complains that they are not found if I unplug them). It says "Unknown Device" for them in the BIOS, while it says "Hard Drive" for the original 20GB drive. It is not a hard drive Master/Slave jumper problem, and yes, all the cables are plugged in properly.

I plugged them into a different computer to get the cylinder/head/sector counts of the drives, and tried to manually specify the settings in the PowerEdge BIOS, but it limits the number of digits you can enter for Cylinders and Sectors. The biggest drive size that you can manually specify in that way is like 8.4GB. But I know this isn't the biggest drive that can be supported, because the stock drive that came with the server is 20GB!

I updated the BIOS to the lastest version (A07), but it didn't seem to have any effect, and the release notes for that update don't mention anything about it either. I've also spent several hours reading thru these forums but haven't see any posts related to it.

So to sum up: verified drives are working, know that motherboard can support >8GB drives, BIOS is updated to latest version, but won't allow us to pick a hard drive to boot from.

BTW, this is one of the least useful BIOS menus I've ever seen. It has like 20% of the normal features/options. It's trying to be 'helpful' by dynamically changing the boot sequence menu to include only devices it thinks are available, but if it were one of those 'old fashion' BIOSs where I manually tell it "HDD0", it would probably work just fine.

PERC2/Si firmware update breaks CD-ROM/DVD boot

I updated my Poweredge 2400's PERC2/Si firmware from 2.7.1.3571 to 2.8.1.6098. As a result, I am no longer able to boot from optical media.

After a bit of pulling my hair and rolling back my firmware, I figured out that what had happed is that the upgrade had changed the order that the option ROMs were being processed.

Initially, under 2.7.1.3571, the option ROM for the PERC2/Si was processed first, allowing the option ROMs of other SCSI controllers to be processed afterwards, which allowed for the DVD drive to boot the system.

After the upgrade, the option ROM for the PERC2/Si is processed last, blocking any of the prior SCSI adapters from being able to boot.

Is anyone aware of a way to fix this problem, short of staying with the older version of the firmware?

How to reset the BIOS to the machine default

I have a fairly old Optiplex GX1 desktop and recently in an attempt to activate a USB 2.0 card which I had added to the macine, I flashed the BIOS from A07 to A10. BIG MISTAKE !!!!!

Unfortunately now I get 'System halted - incompatible Processor' error message and my machine is unusable

Does anyone know where I can get a rebootable floppy disc with the A07 BIOS on it, or the *.exe file used to create a rebootable floppy OR can anyone tell me where on the motherboard the 'reset BIOS to default' button/jumper is ?? Apparently there is such a thing on the motherboard

I've also read on some websites that if you remove the battery from the motherboard, that action should reset the BIOS to default, but it hasnt worked for me........how long does the battery have to be left out for or is there something else I am missing ?????

Or finally does anyone know which reasonably-priced Processors ARE compatible with BIOS A10 ? I think the current processor is a 550 Hz but its difficult to check that now

Any practical advice very much appreciated.........the GX1 was only a backup machine but it was working perfectly before I meddled ;o(

Poweredge 750 Video/Display Problem after Upgrade

Upgraded Poweredge 750 w/ new PCI graphics card w/ 256Mb memory and 4Gb of System Memory. During boot, nothing is displayed on screen. If I remove the new graphics card or the memory the unit displays OK. Unit worked fine w/ the new graphics card and 2Gb of memory. Also works fine w/ 4Gb memory and the old/built-in grahpics. It also works OK w/ the new graphics card and 3Gb memory.

Suspect the 256MB DDR memory on the graphics card and the 4GB of DDR system memory are clashing. Perhaps an address space problem.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

i have a PE2850 that might neither support 64 bit architecture nor Virtualization technology. - no filed in BIOS...

What can i do to have that server support both technologies?

1- upgrade BIOS -
server's version is now A04 and i read that version A07 is the latest.
How can we now the features that a bios version offers?

I have a PE 2550 that is saying it has a bacplane system firmware version of 0.0 and also states that both channel a and channel b are empty when I have 3 scsci hd's installed on channel a through the backplane. Is there a fix for this or is there a way to get the firmware updated on the backplabe?

We''ve got a pretty old 1400sc sitting here, surely out of warranty, and we're getting a new bios error message on boot within the last month.

"Secondary system fan was not detected - F1 to cotinue, F2 for setup."

I can't reboot the machine without getting stuck at this screen. As per the docs, I checked and verified the fan is in fact working. I reseated the power cable that goes into the secondary fan controller also. But no luck.

Currently at bios a09 - but there's no such option to disable this message.

Any more ideas?

Poweredge 1850 : Memory Errors

I am attempting to run the Memory diagnostics test on a Poweredge 1850. In order to proceed I need to clear the Event Log. How do I do this ?.

Managed to resolve this using BMCCFG.EXE --clearsel .

All is now OK.

PERC 3/Di controller - How to ENABLE beeps?

We've had a couple of drive failures on some of our PE2650's and 2950's which haven't resulted in the good old "red alert" style beeps from the internal speaker. I've only noticed they had failed when in the comms room doing maintenance on other servers and caught the blinking orange light out of the corner of my eye.

Is there any way to enable those beeps without having to take the servers offline? I've had a quick look in OMSA and can't see anything obvious.

If not, can anyone tell me which menu it's under in the card BIOS?

I inherited a P2850 and on the POST there are two virtual drives appearing under a "SIL0680 ATA/133 Controller". These virtual rives are messing up my ability to utiize the DVD and floppy drives. How do I get into this SIL0680 controller to get rid of these virtual drives, or is there some other way?

They appear in the device driver list and I have disabled them but it does not seem to help.

Poweredge 4600 Secondary Back Plane Firmware Is Out Of Date, Please Update Firmware.

We have a PE4600, which until last Friday was working, after a reboot it is now coming up with the message that the secondary backplane firmware needs updating, the two channels are running on a PERC 4/dc and no I can only see one set of disk's on one of the channels. I have looked for the firmware update though if someone could point me in the right direction it would be greatly apreciated.

Hoping someone has a solution for this, other than buying a new mobo:

-ITA reported that DRAC firmware was ver 3.30

-Used ITA to remotely install ver 3.38

-Installation "failed to complete; you must restart your system and try again.:

-Upon restart, a quick screen appears befor the Dell splash screen, saying:

!!*** Error: Remote Access Controller initialization failure ***

-After splash screen, this error appears:

"Embedded Server Managemet error"

-After drives spin-up, I get "Press F1 to continue or F2 for setup" (F1 will allow OS to load fine)

-Have re-flashed system BIOS (it was already at A21)

-Tried to re-flash ESM, but got "The Baseboard Management Controller is not available"

-Tried several racadm commands. Each failed with ERROR RC-1

-OMSA doesn't even show the existence of my DRAC anymore

How do i disable a power supply for a PE2950?

Hi, I want to disable one of the PS's on my PE2950 in the BIOS (or Openmanage if that works) and only use one of them to decrease power usage. Is there a way to do this in the BIOS so the LCD doesn't show error messages, and the idiot lights on the back of the server aren't flashing all the time? I checked the hardware owners manual, and couldn't find anything related to this. Thnx Drick

iSCSI Broadcom HBA

With the new BIOS update for the 1950, there is a cryptically add line item:

Added support for iSCSI Offload Engine license key.

I can only assume that this adds support for iSCSI HBA with the Broadcom 5708 chips. How can we get a key? Does it cost money? And will you provide RHEL5 drivers for it (I believe HP is providing bnx2i drivers, but haven't been able to find them on their site)

I was looking for some help here, found a couple of topics similar to why I need help with, but was unable to make them work for me

I need to rebuild the server. OK no brainer, have done it hundreds of times before. Never saw this happen

Insert 'Build and Update Utility' disk and reboot the server

you see the usual items for a windows install

"Uncompressing Linux...Ok, booting from kernal"

"Booting the System please wait..."

"Booting from CDROM may take several minutes depending on speed of your device"

That is where the problems lies, After 2 minutes of accessing the CDROM, it hangs here.

I am under a time line and this needs to be done. I am dead in the water here.

I also tried just to install W2K3 without the utility disk, and I just get blue screened.

I have tried using the media provided with the server (all 6 disks were tried with the same results)

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hello, I manage to install the OS but after restarting server it hangs at boot.

The server is setup with 3 sata discs, 2 of them with raid1, the third without raid.

I have not configured the no raid disc and I'm trying to boot with the raid1 virtual disk.

As I said above the server starts and runs all the firmware info etc.. when the OS is supposed ti boot it hangs.

Booting sequence issue with T5500

I have 2 T5500 (RAID & Non RAID). Specifications are as given below:

Bios – A01

CPU – E5506 2.13GHz / X5570 2.93GHz

Memory – 3GB (3*1GB DDR3)

Video – Nvidia Quadro FX580 / NVS 420

ODD – Internal -- PLDS DVD+/- RW DH-16A6S / External -- Sony Optiarc AD 7240S

I have intended to implement following BIOS settings:

1) System Configuration à USB Controller à No Boot.

2) General à Boot Sequence à

· Onboard or USB floppy drive

· Onboard or USB CDROM drive

· HDD( WDC WD1600AAJS)

I have saved settings and exit from the BIOS. I have inserted the Bootable CD on CDROM (OS CD) and were trying to boot the machine from the CDROM.

but the System can not boot from the CDROM. It shows “No boot device available”.

After that I did following changes to BIOS settings:

1) System Configuration à USB Controller à Enable.

No changes made to boot sequence. Now if I boot the machine using the same bootable CD as above and this time boot from CDROM was successful.

Queries:

1. Is this a known issue?

2. Why this malfunction is happening?

3. In BIOS how this USB Controller option play with boot sequence?

Unable to upgrade PERC 4/Di drivers

In my current work environment I am responsible for maintaining all servers and keeping their drivers/firmware up to date. I have noticed that almost all of our PE2600 servers currently run version 6.41.2.32 PERC 4/Di driver and the SUU shows that 6.46.2.32 is available. When I perform the installation all appears to go well. After the reboot the driver version STILL shows 6.41.2.32. I have tried several different installation methods with the same result. Each time the installation process appears to complete with no problems.

I have a sneaking feeling that this problem may be caused by the fact that someone upgraded the firmware to the most recent version before the drivers. It has always been my understanding that you upgrade the drivers first THEN the firmware. So I guess I would like some input on a couple of issues.

1. If this is indeed caused by the firmware version is there a way to download and downgrade to a previous firmware version? The SUU will not allow me to downgrade and I have been unable to find a previous version for download.

2. If this is not caused by the firmware version can anyone advise another way to possibly correct the issue?

Disable pci slot on PE2850

Any chance I can disable a pci slot on the 2850 via the BIOS?

I notice we can only change the IRQ's but if the server is 100's of miles away and we need to disable a pci device how can this be done?

PE1950 no logical cpu disable?!

Hi!

We have some PE1950 now for XEN server, one server (two dual-core cpus) has follwoing problem:

- bios update from 1.3.7 to 2.5.0 after updating to bios setup and disable logical cpu (that should be ht?) Windows Server 2003 shows 8 cpus before logical cpu off, after logical cpu off, install xen server but it shows also 8 logical cpus. Clear cmos and disable logical cpu -> 8 logical cpus :(

Disabling the logical cpus w/ bios 1.3.7 and Windows shows four cpus.

What goes wrong here? The bios can't diable the logical cpus with version 2.5.0?

Poweredge 2950 BIOS options related to NIC

I have a question about Dell Poweredge 2950 server and BIOS related NIC options. I would like to know if there is an option in BIOS to set the network card bandwidth speed?

- or is it just to enable and disable the NIC's?

The problem is, that i can't get the server to connect to the switch on 1Gbit connection. The switch is gigabit an auto-negotiation is on switch is OK - tried pluging into my laptop - connected 1Gbit. I've tried to force 1Gbit connection on the server side, but it doesn't help ... the only thing i got left is the question stated above

- sorry i would like to take a look at it my self, but it is currently impossible...

Poweredge Servers giving "Memory Fan not detected" error when booting.

Hi,

This is happening on 2 different servers. One of them with 4GB's of RAM and the other one with 1GB of RAM. I just updated the Bios'es. One is a PE750 and the other one is a PE1600C.

As far as I have understood, the servers only need a memory fan if the memory exceeds 4GB, so there shouldnt be a problem.

Has anybody else had similar problems?

Poweredge 2950, L5335 CPU, "Unsupported CPU Configuration"

Hi all,

I was just wondering if someone knows where there's definitive documentation on CPU support in the Poweredge 2950?

When the box in question was purchased it had a single Xeon 5110 (1.6GHz Dual Core, 1066MHz FSB, 4MB L2).

After reading documentation on the series, I understand of course that it (as it's not a 2950 III) doesn't support the 5200/5400 series Xeons (as they're 45nm), but all the BIOS and Firmware documentation I can find (as well as sales documentation from late 2006 / early 2007 when it was purchased) indicates support for the 5300 series in models prior to the III.

The machine is running the latest BIOS (2.5.0) and BMC Firmware (2.37).

On installing a single L5335 (2.0GHz Quad Core, 1333MHz FSB, 8MB L2) in place of the 5110, the system goes through POST, but stops before booting with "Unsupported CPU Configuration. System Halted.". To be clear this is swapping a single CPU for a single CPU, in CPU Socket 1.

I notice that in the BIOS documentation it specifically mentions support for the L5320 (1.83GHz Quad, 1066MHz FSB, 8MB L2)..

Is the issue:

A genuine unsupported combination (in contrast to what the docs say)
A quirk of the BIOS? (ie it 'knows' about other 5300 series CPUs but not the L5335)
FSB? (i.e. if we drop in a L5320 with a 1066MHz FSB, same as the current CPU, will it work?)
Or do early 2950s not support Quad Core CPUs?

So I was wondering if I could boot this model from an USB DVD Drive?

from RAID to scsi problem

I have Dell PE2800 configured with RAID 5 3 73 GB SCSI HDD running win2k3

i have messed with bios settings changed from RAID to SCSI then i rebooted the system

I have been prompted with a message notifying me that data loss will occur if i continue by pressing Y or just press any key to cancel .

i canceled the operation
now i cannot boot the system

i have no backup at all and i want to retreive any data or boot the system again

any ideas would be a great assist thanks in advance

How to Extend RAID 5 virtual drive C created with PERC 6/i with Server 2008-64 OS

Created RAID 5 virtual drive C to load Server 2008 Standard OS using PERC 6/i. Disk Manager in the OS has "Extend" greyed out and "Shrink" is the only viable option. Is there a way to extend this virtual drive short of blowing it away and recreating it?

SUU 1.8.0.50 not working with server 2008

I downloaded SUU 1.8.0.50, burned dvd to update my pe2950. I get to the update page, i select what need to be updated then click on upgrade. then get a confirmation popup. Then click on yes and window closes. Thats it nothing happens at all.

Has anyone experience similar issue? Any other way to do automatic update?

PE2300/500 Server on RAID5 won't boot from Hard Drive

I recently purchased a PE2300/500 server with three 9.1 Gig HDs/RAID 5 configuration. The box has a PERC RAID II Adapter in it configure on RAID5 and seems to be working fine. I went into raid configuration utility and view the configuration all three drives are online in Channel-0 and ID 0,1,and 2 respectively. I was able to boot from my Windows 2000 Adv Server CD and began installation process OK. It saw the drive as about 18Gig as it should. I was able to create a partition, format it with NTFS, and began the install process of copying the files over to the drive. everything copied fine and it asked me to reboot as it should. I took CD out and rebooted machine and it does not boot. I tried downloading the mraid35x drivers and pressing F6 when launching the 2000 CD to see if I needed a third party w2ks driver. that didnt work....same error. I have looked at system setupas well and everything there seems fine. Below is output of screen when I reboot. Does anyone have any ideas what I could try:

Does the disk error read occurred mean its looking for CDROM which is not there now because it boots OK from the CD ROM just not from the Hard Drive? Any Ideas would be greatly appreciated.......

PE2650 Socket 603 Assistance Required

I'm in the process of trying to upgrade my CPU on the PE2650 (400MHz 603 model). I have 2 x 2200MP CPUs, which will only boot with one CPU and will display an error message about processor 1 not having a micronode update.

I then purchased 2 x 2800DP CPUs. It boots fine with 1 CPU but will not even get to the BIOS screen with both CPUs installed.

I have VRM's installed for both and can't fathom why the dratted thing won't boot. I have the A21 BIOS.

Any and all help would be greatly received.
