I am running Win XP Media Edition and use a USB hookup. This problem seems to come and go at various times (usually the most inopportune times). I have reinstalled the drivers and received a new update from Microsoft; neither of these attempts has succeeded in resolving the problem. The printer is a few years old and has previously been connected to a desktop that runs Windows XP. Since the printer pre-dates Vista, the disk that came with it doesn't include Vista drivers. I tried to find the driver on the Dell site but could only find the 32-bit driver. Where can I get the 64-bit driver?

Once I have the right driver, will this be a simple installation? I searched this forum but could not find a question about a fresh install. This printer has never been connected to my laptop, so there shouldn't be anything to uninstall or otherwise clean up, correct?

Side note : The scanning function of this printer stopped working at some point (perhaps after I installed XP SP3). I lacked the nerve to try to fix that problem, despite helpful advice on this forum. I can live without the scanner, but if it miraculously starts working with Vista, that would be cool!

AIO 922 Printer won't scan

Despite uninstalling and reinstalling the printer and reinstalling the drivers, this printer will not scan.
I following these instructions (they can be found at http://support.us.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R207423&formatcnt=2&libid=0&fileid=290592):

1.
Download the “Dell_1815dn_V1.03.04.03_smdall.hd ” on the desktop of the
system that is connected to Dell 1815dn through network.
2. Find the IP address of your printer using the following steps:

a. Press the “Menu” button on the printer operator panel and navigate to “Reports”.

b. Use the arrow keys and scroll to “System Data”.

c. Press the “Select” button to print the system data report.

d. The printer’s IP address appears near the bottom of the page.

3. Open up your internet browser and key in the IP address of your printer. Click on “Printer Settings” link.
4. Then click on the “Update Print Server Firmware”.
5.
After clicking on the link, it will prompt you to enter your printer’s
network password. The user name is admin, and by default, the password
is blank. Click OK after entering.
6. After clicking on OK, you
will see the Update Firmware page. Click on Browse to locate your
“Dell_1815dn_V1.03.04.03_smdall.hd” file.
7. After locating your firmware, click on the Update Printer Firmware button. You should see the Flash Upgrade message.

I moved the file to the root of c:\, removed all spaces and underscores in the filename, even renamed it to "smdall.hd", but it still fails.

I have tried changing the color profiles (.icm) and the printer description (PPD's) with no change. Has anyone else had this problem? What should I look for to fix this? The Dell 4600 unit with Dell issued XP Pro recently decided it didn't recognize the Dell printer after I unplugged and plugged back in the USB cable. I reinstalled the driver for the printer and now it prints into the right margin and the right side of the print is light. The cartridge is new. I thought it might be a driver problem, so I plugged it into my Mac and it installs correctly but it prints with the same margin problem.

I have found a thread on here with the exact same problem that was apparently never solved. The link to the forum is: http://en.community.dell.com/forums/t/18864919.aspx

I have uninstalled and installed the drivers numerous times with whatever variation I could come up with. The problem persists. Each time I diligently deleted the drivers under the C: drive and under "Printers & Faxes" > File > Server Properties > Drivers > Remove. I even tried to install the Lexmark e332n drivers and while the printer works, the problem persists. I have also reset the printer's settings numerous times via the instructions on the other thread. The problem persists.

I would like to know two things:

How can I print a "quality test" page to see what the margins are? I have printed the "Dell Laser Printer 1700" stats sheet but it does not have the margins information on it like the printouts of those on the other thread.

How can I reset the margins on this printer to make it usable again?

I suspect that a number of people have had this problem over the past year as I have found several questions on Fixya.com as well. None of these give any solutions.Perhaps someone has solved this problem?

Firmware 'upgrade' R152145 seems to have killed my 946 printer

I tried to install a firmware upgrade, R152145 because it was there and seemed like a good thing to do, and now my printer wont turn on. Lately I have noticed that I have been having problems with the printers. When I scan a picture or document and save it, then want to print it, it prints very large on both printers. Before I would go to file then print and a box would come up and I would check to see which printer to scan it to, then click on print and it would print exactly the way it was when I scanned it. Now when I do it I go to file, print and a different box appears which shows me sizes of pictures.
I have a Brother HL 2070N printer. Loved it and had no problems until I recently replaced the toner.

I now have a tiny black spot every 37mm.

To muddy these waters, it is possible that the black spot was there before I replaced the toner, and the toner replacement caused me to look more closely at print quality...

Brother's help says that a black dot every 75mm indicates a blemish on the drum. Since my spots are the same size and shape, I doubt it is two blemishes at exactly the halfway point around the drum.

Everything Brother says leads to replacing the drum after trying to carefully remove any visible blemish, which I have tried without success.

My question is this... Could the problem somehow be a defective toner cartridge? The toner roller diameter seems to be smaller, and I am wondering if that 37MM spacing could be a reflection of the toner. I don't want to buy a new drum if it is actually just a bad toner cartridge.

Second question... Does anyone know a good compatible drum for this? I have had very good luck with products from Monoprice, but am always open to suggestions....

aio 946 printerjust beebs

Loaded firmware and now printer only beebs. I was going through the entries for printer problems and came across a very good detailed explanation for removing the print program and re-installing it. Followed it, everything went smooth (great instructions from PudgyOne, my thanks).

The original reason for my search was that the black ink wasn't working. The Dell application told me I had ink left, but no black was printing. So, I installed a brand new cartridge I had for a backup, same problem, thought it might have dried out or something. So I ordered brand new cartridge, and put it in same day i received it. Same problem - my 'printing' in black is either gray, or spotty/not complete or non-existent. (I have resorted to printing all my documents in dark blue)

I have a Dell 946, about 2 years old. The color cartridges work fine, it's just the black. And it is 3 different cartridges that all gave me the same result.

I have cleaned the cartridges (over and over) printed test pages and alignment pages, etc.

That is when I resorted to reinstalling the app. Maybe the instructions for using black ink got corrupted. Same results.

Any ideas? Anybody else see this?Thanx for any help or ideas. The manual states:

First the even-numbered pages are printed. Stack the prints and set them as they are (with the blank side face up) into the Tray1.

Press the "Continue" button on the printer.
Odd-numbered pages are printed in the order page 1, 3

However, from Word, I find that the odd numbered pages are printing first. The "continue" feature kicks in after Page 1 prints and Word additionally asks for confirmation to print the reverse sides.

I suspect that if I can turn the Word duplex mode off, I will resolve this, but this tick box gets removed once I set "duplex on long side".

In writing this I solved the problem! I had been turning Word's manual duplex ON first, and then adding the printer's duplex option. By starting again but with Word's manual duplex OFF, all sorted.

Since I had this problem and struggled, I thought I'd share it anyway in case anyone else has similar.

No audio?

After I reinstall windows xp home I can not get audio back I update audio realtek from Dell web update all drivers.Still there is no audio icon at the bottom of the screen

Using the diagnostics we determined that magenta isn't printing (or is extremely faint) on the leftmost 4 cm of the page. All other colors and black print properly. We've cleaned the scanner window and removed the magenta cartridge then reinstalled it. The magenta toner roller looks fine (there is toner on the entire length). Could we just have a bad magenta cartridge?

3100cn white streak down center of page

I recently replaced my drum cartridge because of black streaking down the right edge of the page. Before replacing it, I used a air duster to clean out the loose toner in the machine. I replaced the drum and now I have a white streak down the center of the page. I attempted to use the diagnostic tools and used the IOT Diag and now it is making some strange sounds as well as the white streak. Please help!
