First of all, sorry if this post is posted in the wrong forum section.

My Service Tag seems to be invalid or at least be missing in the Dell service tag repository.
I have copied the service tag from the back side of my laptop, when prompted so from the Dell support site.
I've also tried to retrive the service tag with the Dell (Active X) service tag retrival tool without any luck.
I bought the computer from Dell (Sweden). And since all the contact with the Dell support requires this tag I seem to be stuck.

Does anyone know how to solve this issue or have anymore information regarding it?
All I really want is to be able to download software (webcam, facial recognition) since I had to install Windows 7 (64bit) because
it's a requirement where I work.

Thanks!

Michael

I understand that to upgrade to Win 7 Pro, I will have to do a clean-install. Ideally, I would like to partition my main hard drive (250gb) in two or three sections, with the OS and system files on one partition and data, music files on the others. My question: Will I have a chance to partition the drive during the clean-install process?

Thanks in advance for any input!

Dell link with help to install Reinstallation CD on a new hard drive?

I will be purchasing a 500GB hard drive from Dell for my Inspiron 9300. Is there a tutorial or link on Dell.com that can provide a step-by-step process for using the Reinstallation CD(s) on a new hard drive? Thanks!

DELL C521........
My parents has just bougth a Dell Inspirion 545 MT with Windows 7.

We have two problems, both regarding the screensettings.

1) When using the Windows picture- and faxviewer both the picture and the surrounding (white) frame gets a yellow gleam - Why? Does it have something to do with the other problem?

2) The font / the text / letters are quite close, e.g. under the icons on the desktop and also in Firefox. - Why? The solution is the standard 1600 x 900, and it's running with 60 hertz (only possible option). I have tried to remove the driver, reboot and install the newest from Dell's webpage - without result - BUT, if I change the solution to a lower, accept it, and then change it back to 1600 x 900 again it looks perfect - until the next reboot :(

A live chat with a sales representative led to one (and only one) solution - call the Dell support number during office hours. Well, funnily enough I am at work then, and I don't have access to my laptop. Also, why should I pay them so that they can get around the shortcomings of their website and back office systems? All I want to do this for is to get customer for...

Of couarse, I can'find out, because my service tag is invalid!

Detailed explanation of problem: I'm pretty sure my registry is corrupt, but I don't want to lose all of my personal files doing any re-installation or formatting, which are the only options I haven't tried at this point... Is there any way to manually fix the registry without doing any of that?

Here's the scoop on what the problem is, and maybe you can tell me how to fix it without all this trouble. So basically, I was being bad and using my neighbor's unprotected wi-fi because I couldn't afford to get my own. The jerks decided to switch to Comcast, and a page saying something about activating service came up anytime I tried to do anything with the internet. After a few days and them still not doing anything about it, I thought perhaps the software had to be installed on my computer in order for me to feed off of them. So I downloaded it. It installed. I opened it up and it asked for an account number, to which I didn't have. I gave up, and proceeded to cancel. The program told me to restart my computer so it could set my configurations back to normal, so I let it do so. It never got past BIOS.

After about a week's worth of troubleshooting, I came to the conclusion (through a memory diagnostics) that the registry was corrupt. When my computer starts, it gets past BIOS, but then takes me to a screen telling me to repair my computer. I click the repair button. It does nothing but restart itself. I also tried to start in safe mode, but on the screen where it goes to load the windows files, it doesn't load any and restarts itself.

After trying that, I then popped in the OS disc and told it to boot from that. I ran memory diagnostics, tried to make it do the system restore (it said no restore point was there, but I know there were many), then I ran startup repair. One time it told me it could fix the registry by restarting, then another time it told me that it couldn't be manually repaired. In order to get into my computer at all, I was forced to install Vista on my recovery drive. That will only boot in safe mode, but at least it's something. So I do have access to my files, but only in safe mode and no way to back them all up. My recovery drive is only 10GB, most of which is now taken up by the new Vista OS.

Below is a summary of what is above.

Symptoms:

1. Won't boot from either safe mode or normal mode. Restarts when it gets to loading drivers.

2. When diagnostics is ran, errors are found on the OS drive. An message is displayed indicating it's a registry error.

Things I already tried:

1. Safe mode. D: Along with any other random configuration possible...

2. Copying core files from the newly installed OS to the old one. It only let me do a few, and probably not the important ones...

3. Startup repair, along with the rest of the diagnostics tools available on the OS disc. Takes me in circles no matter what I try.

4. Using commercial products to fix the registry. They find errors, but won't fix them.

5. Every other way you would think of to start off with... i need advanced help here people.

The only thing I haven't tried is re-installing the OS on the OS drive. Please don't tell me I absolutely have to... There must be a manual way to fix this...

Windows 7 and XPS 720

I have received my pre-order of WIndows 7. I have run the upgrade advisor and have downloaded 3rd party drivers. I then go to the Dell Windows 7 page and do not see the XPS 720 listed as Windows 7 compatible. My PC is less than 2 years old...

I have bought a Vostro 1520 Dell laptop with Vista Home Basic operating system this summer. And with a software I extended my OS drive (partition c:\) in to 2 partition. But my windows and my files in system partition didn’t damage or remove. And I saved my D:\ partition which my recovery image was stored in. but when I press F8 button before windows login the boot menu appear but the “Repair your computer” choice isn’t exist in the list. And I can just run Dell backup and Recovery tools from windows. (it works correctly from windows.)
I would like to know how I can make this program run correctly before windows login.(In F8 menu)
I put my OS DVD and repair start up but nothing happened. In addition I checked partition’s name from OS DVD boot,so my new partition is named E:\ and my recovery partition is remained on D:\ partition.
And if I install new windows (windows7 or vista) how can I install Dell Backup and recovery manager software.
Best regards
Mohammad Reza

After hitting F8 during boot I have several options but no "repair your comptuer".
Maybe it is because I installed Ubuntu as a second system (I didn't check if the option was there before installing Ubuntu).

The second fact is that since couple of weeks ago when I access "my computer" in windows I see two additional partitions that weren't visible before: it is d:(RECOVERY) and F:(MEDIADIRECT). To be frank it was after I accidently spilled a cup of espresso onto the keyboard - after cleaning and drying the hardware computer works almost perfectly but has this two partitions and "hibernate" option doesn't work.
I googled a bit and found that Dell uses MS imagex software to do the recovery.

On the "recovery" partition I found an image "factory.wim" but have no idea how to apply the image. The imagex software is there also but it doesn't work from windows. There is also a program "PCrestore.exe" but it doesn't work from inside windows...

Should I make a bootable pendrive and try the imagex from DOS? Or maybe there is some other option?

Thanks for any suggestions.

According to the Eligibility Criteria page, the Inspiron 530 is eligible for the Windows 7 Upgrade (it's listed as one of the models in the desktop drop down box). As soon as I received the desktop I registered for the Windows 7 upgrade. I just received my discs last week, but when I tried to run the Windows 7 Upgrade Assistant DVD, it wouldn't work - it got to a page that listed all the windows 7 minimum specs, and said that my model number was not eligible. I tried support chat, but haven't been able to get that to work for the last few days. I e-mailed customer support, and they were supposed to call me a few days ago, but they have not called back. Who should I contact now - Unresolved Issues?

I can only think of one thing that may be affecting the upgrade installation - the system originally shipped with 32 bit Vista Home Premium. Per Dell's policy, I requested & received a 64-bit version of Vista, and am currently running that. However, the discs that shipped arrived with 32-bit version of Windows 7 Home Premium - I assume that's because my system was originally configured with 32-bit Vista Home Premium. At this point, although I would prefer 64-bit Windows 7, I just want to get the upgrade over with, & would gladly install my 32-bit Windows 7 discs if I could get them to work. I'm not sure that's the problem, though- the Upgrade Assistant DVD clearly indicated that it was my model - Inspiron 530 - and not my current OS that's the problem.

How do you remove Dell Demote Access???

I'm trying to upgrade my Vista

About half way through the backup, a message came up and told me to insert disk 2 to continue. The disk that was in the computer did not eject automatically (which I thought it would do since it was asking me to insert another one) and would not eject even though I pushed the control at the top of the laptop. Since I was not able to eject that disk I canceled the procedure. Even though the procedure has been canceled, the disk still will not eject. Why would it not automatically eject the first disk so I could continue with the second and why can't I eject it now even though the procedure has ended?

Windows 7 upgrade

I apologize if this post is in the wrong place, but this forum, like most everything else having to do with Dell customer support, is frustratingly non-intuitive.

I have been trying for weeks to get my windows 7 upgrades for my wife's laptop and my desktop computer. Both are eligible. I applied for her's and was told it could validate her system. I added the upgrade to my cart, and completed the process, but I've never received any word about if my request was accepted, when it should arrive, or if they even got my request.

For my desktop, it keeps telling my system is not in the database. I purchased it on October 26th. I'm entering the correct service tag and all the other information it asks for. I've sent in e-mails that haven't been answered, and I'm very frustrated. Would someone from Dell PLEASE tell me what I need to do to get my Windows 7 upgrade.

These are the 3rd and 4th computers I've purchased from Dell in the past few years, but if I can't get help from an actual human being soon, they will be my last.

Dell Dimension 2400 XP not booting - left with black screen with white cursor.

Hi - I have a Dell Dimension 2400 that has served me very well for a number of years and hence have my entire life's work on the drive. At some stage yersterday i found that i could not execute any programs although i had complete control of the mouse /keyboard and file listing funtionality. I'd seen this before once in the past so attempted a controlled restart which i believe resolvedf the issue before The restart did not execute. I then tried a controlled shut down. This didnt execute either. I then tried a system restore that would hopefully rid me of any infectiion or issue and enforce a shutdown as well. Although i could select a restore date, this did not execute either. I then tried disconnecting the power and then turned the pc back on. The pc started booting but came up with the message "We are sorry any Inconvenience...." etc etc I let it boot as normal but although the bios check bar seemed to fill up ok and the the windows logo came up it reverted to black screen with a white mouse pointer and the activity on the drive/pc ceased. I tried the power reset again and tried choosing the boot in safe mode option but again this resulted in a black screen although it did say safe mode, but still the same outcome.

I then found my original Dell restore cd disc. I tried booting againn this time pressing F12 to boot from disc. This ddnt work. I then pressed F2 to disable the boot from drive as well. ( have tried F8 on boot as well)

I eventually got a message asking to boot from cd which it did and the windows setup window appeared. It loaded all the files/drivers etc and then asked if i wanted to repair or proceed with full windows load. When repair version didnt work, I tried both of these but still when booting the windows logo appears then the screen reverts to a black screen with white mouse. I have also now found that when it boots it is btpassing any of the error "inconvenience"display goes to the wndows logo & a window that says "windows xp setup is being restarted." The it just stos in its tracks.

I am now in a complete maze as to where i go or what i can do.

I also ran the original diagnostic tool cd i had with the machine and no errors were apparent.

I am running XP service Pack 2 - anti virus Avast and Spyware Doctor

Can somebody please help as my world is on this machine.

many thanks

The PC has Windows XP SP2 installed as well as Ubuntu 9.10 on a separate partition. Last week I changed out the processor (P4 3.06) to another separate P4 3.06 that I am testing for my familys computer.

No problems at all with the switch, except that when shutting down XP, it never completes, the hard drive shuts off, the disc drives stop and monitor goes on standby but the motherboard fan stays on as well as the power light. I must hold the power button down to actually turn it off. The strange thing is that when in Ubuntu, the PC shuts down normally, completely shutting down.

Any clue as to the cause of this? I have not tested putting the first P4 back in but I will soon. Although I'd like to know why this happens, if anybody can help I appreciate it. Thank you.

system restore stopped responding

i have a dell 540s running vista 64 bit. recently when i tried to install microsoft updates i realized that the system restore stopped working whenever it tries to create a restore point it just hangs doing nothing. i tried start up recovery, dell suppot tools, i ran sytem restore from the start up repair screen with no results. can anyone help

trying to load OS cd onto laptop to install on hard drive- dell inspiron 1501

i recently had an update on my laptop and ran it. When the Dell Assistant tool pops up, it starts Internet Explorer 8 right away.
These were all transfers from a hard-drive enclosure. Apparently, the enclosure set everything on that drive to "Read Only" by default.

Now, how do I unset everything that was set as Read-Only and keep it unset FOR GOOD?

Moreover, this is Windows 7.

Update: When I go to the Command Prompt, and type "attrib -r c:\users", it tells me "File not found - C:\users". Well, I don't want it to remove the attribute from one single file at a time, I want it to remove the read-only from the whole folder, subfolders, and ALL the files in it! Ironically enough, typing "dir c:\users" was able to bring up its directory, so if it can find the directory, why can't it remove the read-only attribute from there?

Update 2: When I tested removing the read-only attribute from one individual file from the Command Prompt, it said "Access Denied" and what I had just typed to command that. I'm in a real STUBBORN and precarious predicament, so I can only greatly hope that you can provide a way out.

Update 3: There's a remote possibility that even though I'm the sole user of this laptop, the OS doesn't believe I'm "admin enough" to be allowed to unset read-only. If so, how do I enable extra administrator permissions for this account? (And specifically to allow unsetting "read-only" from anything?)

XPS M1530 Windows 7 Drivers Support Page

Why when i insert my service tag it shows invalid informaton about my device with no support !????

I have bought a Dell Studio laptop 2 month ago with Windows Vista and I am now trying to upgrade to Windows 7. Whenever I run the Windows 7 upgrade advisor, it tells me that I cannot install windows 7 because I have to uninstall LifeCam version 1.1.0.0. However I never had LifeCam version 1.1.0.0 on my laptop but only version 2.0 which I have already completely uninstalled. Still the advisor software complaints about LifeCam version 1.1.0.0 and will not let me run the upgrade.

Any help or advise on this?
