I am using the following adapter:

and the Startech.com solution.

The problem I am having is that there are Dell LCDs that seem to not want to work with the adapter, like they are not detected by Windows or stuck in power save mode. I have made some progress by updating to the latest display drivers from Dell but this has not resolved all the issues with some LCD models. Bios is up to A03 on the mobo.

Is this a common issue with VGA LCDs and using this adapter? Also seems that older models work better than they new models and all 19" LCDs work compared to select 17"

When I connect through HDMI port to my Panasonic plasma (TH-42PZ77U), there is no video, and the fan starts to whir. At same time, have no problem connecting via the card's DVI port (using DVI-VGA adaptor) to a Multisync LCD 1970NX.

Dell support says it has something to do with the HDMI cable, and that I need to contact Panasonic for their "technical specs"! Neither suggestion makes sense: I have other PC's connected via same HDMI cable to same Plasma monitor with no issues. Also, when I use similar graphics card in another PC, again I have no issues using same HDMI cable connecting to same plasma monitor.

Any one have similar problem? Any suggestion appreciated.

The only way I can get it to work is to have both it and the on-board graphics chip running together - done this by selecting the Radeon as the default display and by not having the Windows desktop run over onto the Intel display. Problem: If I disable the on-board graphics chip as per the fitting instructions and then set my Bios to auto select, the computer boots and is active but all I get is a blank screen regardless of which output the monitor is connected to. Also, as I have the Radeon as the default display in Windows I don't see anything (no Dell boot screen, etc) when I switch my machine on until Windows log on screen as I have to have the Bios set to 'On-board' in the graphics option otherwise the aforementioned problem persists. Has anyone else encountered this problem, and if yes, has anyone managed to overcome it i.e. successfully disabled the on-board chip? Unfortunately there is no Bios upgrade from Dell that allows a user to select either auto, on-board AND PCI - the last one being ideal it would seem!

THE VIDEO CARD DISSCUSION THREAD!
I am using a brand-new Dell Precision T5500 with the NVIDIA Quadro NVS 295 256MB graphics card it shipped with. I have connected it to a Dell 2405FPW monitor using a DisplayPort to VGA adapter.

If I press [F2] when the machine starts up, or alternatively if I press [F12] and try to go into System Setup, the system hangs a moment and then displays the following error:

"Incompatible video controller. Vesa function 0x4f02 returned AX = 14f"

I searched around and mainly saw this problem happening for laptops, with the conclusion that the video card was busted. However, on this desktop machine, if I do not intervene at all and just let Windows XP boot up, the system has no problem with the video. I only see this error when I try to get into the setup. So, I don't think that the video card is fried, and the monitor is working fine. But I don't know what else would be causing the problem.

Any ideas? Has anyone else seen a problem like this? Input would be much appreciated. Thanks!

B110 PCI Video Card Upgrade suggestions?

Hi all,

(btw, works perfectly with Windows XP Pro)

Graphics card: first Nvidia GTS 250, now Nvidia GTX 285, neither works correctly.

I've installed the latest Nvidia and Dell drivers.

When I first install a card, before it has the driver, it uses the full
screen and up to 1920x1200 resolution. When I install the driver and
reboot, it is messed up.

Symptoms:

It only supports 1024x768, it does not use the entire screen, there are
2+ duplicate screens (just a tiny bit of the third one at the bottom)
on the left side (right side of the screen is blank), and the image is
stretched horizontally. It only has the option of one higher resolution, but screen goes blank and does not work at that one.

In the two pictures you can see the blue power button in the bottom right, which shows how much of the right side is blank.

i found a diablotek ATI range XL video card that looks like it would work. my PCI bus speed on the dell is 33mhz . looks like this pci video card is 230mhz, which is plenty plenty fast and even would bottle neck, correct? would i benefit any from purchasing a faster video card than this? would i benefit from purchasing a video card in the first place? i placed my computer specs below the video card specs. thanks for the info.

although it's about four years old I've just got it.

Everything seems to work OK, I loaded up XP Pro and as I wanted to run two monitors I added a second video card, it's an Asus Extreme EAX550GE 256MB PCI-Express in the first slot (PEG I think?).

Looking at other messages on here it seems that I can't use the on-board video connection now, the BIOS disables it apparently.

So what do I need to do to get two monitors working please?

Would an 'old-fashioned' PCI video card work with the on-board card enabled? I only need 768 x 1024, not exactly high definition and I have two Dell flat-screens.

If someone suggests using a split cable then would that work on the on-board video connection and I can remove the second card?

TBH I'd rather have two separate cards, less strain on them and if one fails then I can still do some work.

Any ideas please?

Will a 9800GT work in my XPS 400? I see it has the same power requirements as that of the 8800GT (400W PSU.) I know the PSU thing has been beaten to death, but I have to ask because EVGA wouldn't replace my 8800GT, which has anti-aliasing and artifact problems since I got it. After asking what my PSU amps were, they said it couldn't handle the card and that that's why I see artifacts and aliasing problems. Only thing I can think of is that it's just the architecture of the 8800GT, or I got two faulty cards (my RMA was just someone else's returned card.)

So, again, can the PSU handle the 9800GT? Any other suggestion for a new card?

I am running an XPS 630i with VIsta 64 and 8GB of RAM using an older NVidia 9800GT. Recently I upgraded to Sony Vegas Pro 9 video editing software and the video playback (scrubber) is very sluggish and making it nearly impossible to sync mutiple camera angles. Sony suggests upgrading my video card to the new NVidia GTX 295. Question is - my 9800GT reports that it is on a PCI-E x8 bus and the new GTX 295 requires an x16 bus. No idea how to tell if my XPS 630i will support that. Tried entering the service code in Dell Support but it doesn't want to tell me what the MOB is capable of, only what I ordered and what it presently installed.

Can anyone answer this Q? Will the GTX 295 fit/work in the 630i? It's an extremely fast video card with 2x procs and nearly 2GB of dedicated RAM.

Appreciate any help you can give.

I have a L'Tude D830 running Windows 7-32bit. I have been running it on this 'Tude for several months now on 732 with no problems, very stable, except for one nagging, niggling issue: the video driver. Every so often the video will spaz out and the screen image will get all jumbled, forcing me to shut down. Other times it will just freeze all together forcing me to do a push-button power-down.

I was getting pop-up msgs in my system tray indicating that I needed to install the video driver, even though I had already installed it. Since Dell's support site shows no drivers for Windows 7 for my D830 I downloadedit directly from nvdia using their (Quadro NVS Series (Notebooks)) *Quadro Graphics driver*, not the *Performance Driver*, and installed it again and the problem persists.

I am running at the *recommended* resolution of 1280x800 landcape model.

My event shows Event ID 4101. Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered

This does not occur all the time but from time-to-time. I am running out of my own options for a solution and hope you can share some of yours to help solve this thing.

All fine except I can't change the display from fixed setting of 600 X 480. The messeage "You cant change this setting because the height of your disply is less than 600 pixels.

I left my computer on as i normally would 3 days ago and came back up switched the monitor on and there was nothing on the screen yet the 420 was still running.

Did a restart and noticed dashes and dots on the BIOS screen and windows starup screen and got the BSOD - see images

a) the dell factory driver
b) the updated dell factory driver
c)the nvidia most up to date driver

all 3 that i tried still gave me the BSOD

The only way i could access windows (not safe mode) was by uninstalling the 8800gt driver.

Once loaded into windows i don't get the vertical lines and dots but obviusly my resultion isn't right because of the driver. Tried installing driver from here and still get the same problem.

So basically any 8800 GT driver i install gives me the BSOD - does this mean my video card has had it?

Its 2 months out of warranty too which is a bit of a bummer.

Would love to hear any suggestions as to what else i can try or if you just think the card's 'a gonna' and if this is the case then what do you think my chances are for a replacement from dell?

Tried all the trouble shooting on the dells website too (resitting card , cleaning dust etc)

1. What's the real deal with these power supply ratings? By the way, I'm planning on getting 8 GB RAM and also attaching a blu-ray player/reader to this machine. I know each component draws a little bit of wattage from the power supply, and that comes into play.

2. If I get the top of the line video card, what are the chances of frequent systems crashing? I'm not a gamer, but I do ocassional video editing

3. So, IF I GET THE EXTENDED WARRANTY AND THE SYSTEM KEEPS CRASHING, DELL HAS TO FIX IT, RIGHT, IF I ORDER ALL PARTS FROM DELL?

Thanks for your help. It's weird that Dell would offer incompatible parts for a desktop unit, but still, I have to ask the question.

I am having major issues with this card starting with the mouse / computer locking up for a second then starting then locking up again. Also I am getting poor performance in general. I have tried PNY support & DELL Support. I am at a loss please tell me someone else has this card installed in a 420 or is having the same problems. I have tried the latest drivers and removed them and reinstalled them and still get same results. I need to upgrade the AGP video card, but the only decent video cards I have found require at least a 300watt power supply. I would like 256mb, but I guess 128mb is sufficient.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a compatible video card? Should I upgrade the DELL power supply, or does anyone know of a good video card that will run on a 250watt power supply? Is it possible to run a video card that is rated for 300watts on a 250watt system?

Must I use only a DELL authorized power supply if I have to upgrade it too?

Thanks for any help!

Assistance required for selecting a new graphics card...

Hi,

I am the owner of a Dell Dimension 8300 Desktop PC (P4, 2.8GHz) 800FSB. I need to update my graphics card so that I can enjoy some of the latest PC games. Currently I have a GeForce 5200 128MB graphics card installed.

I am struggling though... there are so many specifications for graphics cards I have reached a very confused standstill! ... Here's what I do know:

I need an AGP card.

I may need to change my PSU to accomodate an improved graphics card - which I will do when I know what's required.

My favourite game is FM2010 - the minimum video card requirement for this is 128MB nVidia FX 5900 Ultra or ATI Radeon 9800

I would like to be able to connect two monitors / screens.

However, I would like build in a bit of future-proofing and put in the best graphics card that I can, without incurring any problems such as 'bottle-necking' which I have read about - I understand that it's pointless to put in a card that exceeds the performance of the motherboard but I've no idea what I should be looking for. If any details regarding my motherboard or any other system parts are required then please let me know and preferably where they can be found.

I really am at a loss when it comes to understanding clock frequency, memory frequency, the codes ie. 5900 vs. 5600 and pixel pipes. How important is the memory ie. 512MB or 1GB and should I go for DDR2 or DDR3?

Suggestions for specific cards which I can search for and purchase would be greatly appreciated.

Many, many thanks in advance for any help and advice offered.

Regards,

James
