Hi e.pierce thanks for the reply,

you mentioned "MS SysInternals "PageDefrag"" what is this all about i too regularly defragment my hdd but never heard of this sysinternal page defrag. can u please explain me about this.

1) how do i check whether i have malware effected my pc as i am uing free version of avira ?

2)how do i check unnecessary files which are loaded up in startup in msconfig. ?

also: all things being equal, going from single core to dual core will most likely give a big performance boost. even my cheapo little $230 Shuttle (at home) has a low-end dual core CPU (2100?), and it is surprising fast when running Win XP Pro with 2G RAM, and a cheapo dedicated video card w/ 512MB RAM (eVGA geforce 8400 gs nvidia) I got at Frys for <$50.

fireberd is right about the malware issue being the most typical performance problem.

however, in some cases (no pun intended), adding RAM *will* clear a performance bottleneck, and substantially improve average performance. similar for replacing "integrated" video with add-in video cards (GPU) with 256MB/512MB RAM.

however, if the CPU (or other major component) is horribly slow, or hard drive is slow, or highly fragmented, the additional RAM/GPU may not help much.

I have seen noticeable performance increases in Win XP Pro by going from 512MB to 2GB RAM on several different PCs. These are PCs that were "clean" of malware, and whose hard drives are regularly defragmented, including running MS SysInternals "PageDefrag" http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897426.aspx

RAM is not the answer to speed up a system. A RAM will allow more programs to be opened at one time, less "caching" but that's about all.

What is in startup can be one issue. Spyware/Malware etc can be another, especially if some P2P program such as limewire is installed. Registry cleaners won't help and in many cases will cause problems rather than fixing them.

Hi all,

Recently i have upgraded my ram from 256 to 1 gb.

i have removed the previous ram inserted my new one.

i was expecting much higher performance from my system

but i don't see any big difference in performance.

so could u please help to find out why my pc is running so slow

i am updating avira free version regularly as my antivirus.

could u suggest any things i should check for poor performance i don't use any third party cleaners.

can i do some manual thing in my pc apart from clearing pretetch, temp files.

My Pc : - I have assembled my pc from local store

OS : windows XP sp2
