Optiplex 755 , E4500 2.2GHz 2Gb RAM 250Gb HD

Runs and installs XP SP3 from the reinstall DVD no problem.

Wanted to learn about Windows 7 x64 managed to do one install and now have many problems.

Main one is that after doing a clean install the DVDs often fail before the install program asks for the country.

Screen is still monchrome and headed Windows Boot Manager

I am not using any USB plug in devices - apart from the internal card reader. I have changed the hard drive, DVD drive and the SATA cables.

Message reads

Windows has encountered a problem communicatiing with a device connected to your computer.

This error can be caused by unplugging a removeable storage device such as an external USB drive while the device is in use, or by faulty hardware such as a hard drive or CD-ROM that is failing. Make sure any removable storage is properly connected and then restart your computer.

Status : 0xc00000e9

Info: An unexpected I/O error has occurred.

Sounds like the Windows PE Boot Manager is far less fault tolerant / more sensitive than DOS/Windows XP boot

Any ideas

New Alienware Aurora won't run

I received a new Alienware Aurora system almost 3 weeks ago and within 2 days it would power up but not boot up. Then miraculously it booted up and worked for a day then they system shut down on its own but did not power down. Anyone else had this experience? Tech support claims I need a new motherboard. They have promised me one will be shipped 3 different times over the past 2 weeks with 3 different dates before telling me it was on back order and did not know when they would receive it. I am now being told that it is in stock and I will be called on Monday, Nov 23rd to schedule a tech to replace it. Somehow I am not believing this will happen.

DVD Movies cannot be played in Windows 7

Brief Description of Problem:

DVD drive will not read commerical DVD movies after upgrading T5400 to Windows 7

Tried multiple playback software (Windows Media Player, TLC, GOM Player, Roxio, Cyberlink) - Nothing worked

And The second question is the same as the first question except that its a Demension 4500 series. The reason I wish to ask is that i want to install window 7 on the B110 and my motherboard can only use a Celeron D. So if they are ATX standard i could in theroy replace them to more powerful boards.

Adding memory

I am still a little confused confused about adding memory to my dell dimension e520. Currently it has 512mb for memory ,2 256mb modules in slots 1 and 2. I want to bump it up to 1gb. I live in canada so i want to save on shipping and duty. M y question is, would it be best to just purchase 2 more 256 modules or can i purchase 1- 512 module and add it? The 512 is cheaper than the 2-256 modules. If i can just add the 512 module then which slot would i put it in and which slots would i move the 256 modules to. If i go with all 256 modules and i decide later to increase the memory more then it would have been a waste of money buying 2 more 256 modules. I would appreciate if someone could give me some advice or thoughts. Thanks a bunch

Question about fan speed and temeratures for XPS 435T/9000

Loaded SpeedFan 4.39 to check the speed and temperatures inside my 435T and this is what I get.

After a months time I had ordered mine (9/26) and it was supposed to ship on (10/22), after two delays it finally shipped out and will be received today (10/28). If you have any issues or have found any solutions to help get your systems sooner please help others that have also been in this predicament. It would seem the main issue is due to the high demand of I5 and I7 processors and parts being backordered. If you call customer service after a delay often times they will upgrade you to one day shipping, even though it took them three days to actually get it out.

compatability HP base unit and Dell E171FPB monitor

My HP monitor recently died and I have been given a Dell flat panel monitor with cables etc. I powered up the PC and monitor then was left with a message on the monitor that it was in 'power save mode click any key on keyboard or mouse' I tried this but nothing. I am unable to download drivers etc if needed as I have just a blank screen.

Dell has been horrible (Dell Spare Parts by Phone) and I'm looking for easy simple things.

Is there a way I can buy directly from Dell or is there a parts wholesaler that will be reasonable? I have a fleet (50+) of Optiplex 755's (MT, SFF) and a bunch of Precision Workstations. I'm looking for simple stuff like CD/Floppy bay blank/block off plates (to cover the empty hole), Cables & internal parts, misc. hardware like screws & clips to hold motherboards to the chasis, etc.

I'm sick and tired of spending hours on the phone with Dell fighting over Service Tag IDs, Warranty info, etc. I just want to be able to order the parts I want so I can configure my machines the way I want. For example I have a 755MT HDD caddy which lost two of the HDD retainer pins - can I purchase those? I also have about 5 spare "parts" computers that I'd like to consolidate and get running.

Thx for any advice or input. I'm located in NYC if that matters. I'm fine doing things via USPS/UPS as long as ordering is easy.

Need to reset BIOS on Inspirion 530

I am rebuilding my son's 530 and the BIOS update failed leaving me with just beeping no video. I'm planning on installing a medium/high end video card, and I'm concerned that the stock PSU will not provide sufficient wattage.

My questions are:

1) Should I be concerned that either the XPS 8000 or 9000 are too small to handle modern video cards? Do the two XPS models have the same card-size limitations?

2) Dell was once in the habit of using non-standard PSUs that were extraordinarily difficult to upgrade. Does Dell still use these non-standard PSUs?

I've read through these forums, and I realize that it's possible that the stock PSU will be sufficient for anything I throw at it. However, if that turns out not to be the case, I want to know that I can easily remedy the problem with a PSU upgrade.

Many thanks for any answers.

Just really hoping for some help here because I am at my wits end. Last month I received my brand new XPS9000 computer with Core i7-920 processor, 8GB RAM, 1024mb video etc. ect. Very nice computer. Came with Vista with free upgrade to 7. Anyways, the VERY first time I turned this computer on, I got a bluescreen and immediate crash. This was before set up was complete and everything. Since then, the computer crashes every time I turn it on and also randomly while in use. My memory meter when at IDLE is running at approx. 40% (of 8GB!!) at ALL times. I constantly get bluescreen crashes that say "memory management." I have called numerous times to technical support only to have them tell me this is normal. I am about to pull my hair out. I have always been a happy, loyal Dell customer, but this treatment is enough for me to never touch Dell again. I have personally logged over 10 hours on the phone with technical support in India this month, most of the time spent on being transferred from customer care to technical support and back. Is it asking too much to expect a $1300 computer to work right out of the box? All I want is the situation fixed or a simple exchange for a working computer. I would really love to talk to someone in the US so there is not a language barrier, but I have all but given up on that. I refuse to believe that Dell finds it "acceptable" for a 1 month old, flagship model computer to crash every time it is turned on. I also upgraded to Win 7 per the advice of a tech, but it didn't change a thing. Every time I call, the tech says" Sorry I can't help you at this time." Very frustrating! When I pay this much for a computer I expect it to work, and if it doesn't, then fix it or replace it. Right?!
I purchased my system at the end of December last year, but due to Dell repeatedly shipping the wrong monitors, it was mid-January before I was able to actually use it. It was initially rock solid, but from almost day one I received the following message intermittently when booting:

Alert! Previous attempts at booting this system have failed at checkpoint [D0]. For help resolving this problem, please note this checkpoint and contact Dell Technical Support.

The system ran smoothly, so I waited to see if I would have any further issues. The checkpoint code message remained intermittent and I would occasionally receive a similar message with the checkpoint code [B1]. I contacted Dell and was told to update the BIOS, which I did, but that made no difference. Dell tech support had no other ideas on what to do for the problem and suggested I ignore it since the system seemed to be operating fine. With each BIOS update release, I would update my system, but the intermittent messages continued. The system continued to run fine.

Fast forward to October and I purchased Windows 7 Professional 64-bit edition and did a clean install. I updated all my drivers and software and the system seemed stable and ran much smoother and faster than under Vista. But after a couple days, the system started intermittently freezing up, or a blue screen error would quickly appear and the system would restart. Since the system had been without issues prior to Win 7, I suspected either a OS issue with a driver or a program conflict. I tried using different programs and experimenting to see if I could find anything that seemed to be the cause, but it remained intermittent. I did another clean install of Win 7, but this time I only installed the OS and the various driver updates. I let the system run that way and found that it would still occasionally freeze up. At that point, I decided to restore my previous Vista installation from a backup image until I could research the Win 7 problem further. But after doing so, I found that the same intermittent issues of freezing, blue screens and restarts occurred with Vista. I then restored my drive to the way it was when I received it from Dell and had the same problem occur.

One other thing I noticed was that the checkpoint codes had become more common during boot and in addition to the [D0] and [B1] codes I was also receiving checkpoint codes [DE] and [D1]. And sometimes the system would take 2-3 minutes to get passed the BIOS screen at bootup.

At that point I tried running the full Dell diagnostics from the diagnostic partition. It took over 12 hours to run all the tests, but the system passed all of them. At that point I contacted Dell tech support via chat and explained the situation. After discussing the problems, tech support told me that it was most likely caused by a bad motherboard and hard drive and Dell would replace them. The Dell tech came on Wednesday and replaced both.

After the Vista operating system finished loading on the new drive, I let the system run to see what would happen. I intended to just do basic driver updates and load only my essential programs to test the system. If it seemed stable after a couple days, I would install Win 7. However, after the system sat idle for about 20 minutes I touched the mouse and the screen saver went off and the system almost immediately gave a blue screen and restarted.

I again contacted Dell tech support and explained the situation. The rep ended up getting on my system remotely and changed the power settings to disable Hybrid Sleep and then ran an SFC scan. He then told me to restart the system and that it would be fine. As I attempted to restart, the computer froze again. He then had me turn off the system and turn it back on again, pressing F12 to get to the Diagnostic partition. He asked that I run the memory diagnostic tests and that he would call me back. The memory tests ran and all passed. As I rebooted the computer, it went past the BIOS and as Windows began to boot the system froze again. At that point, I was fed up and decided to shut it off and wait until morning. The Dell tech never called to check back.

Thursday morning I contacted Dell again and a rep asked that I turn on the system. as it booted it displayed the checkpoint [D0] error and then booted Vista. The rep took control and installed Windows Debugger, but found there were no mini dump files logged on the system. He looked at various settings and finally suggested that I run the diagnostic tests on my hard drive. Since those tests take hours, he told me he would call back. He called after 2 hours and the tests were still running and no errors had been found. He told me he would call back in another 2 hours. He called again and there were still no errors displayed. He said he was at the end of his shift, but could call back tomorrow and see what the results were. If there were no errors with the hard drive, he would have me re-install the operating system, despite the fact that it was a clean installation the night before. The HD tests completed without any errors found. I rebooted the system and Vista froze again after a short period of time.

I again contacted Dell and explained everything to the rep and was told to run the diagnostics on the memory. I explained that those tests had been done twice before and had passed, but that I would try again. I was then told to shut off the system and pull out all the memory and install one stick at a time and boot the system and run it to see if it will fail in an effort to see if it will fail with only certain sticks of RAM. I am in that process now and so far have tried three separate sticks of RAM with the system freezing with each one within 20-45 minutes.

I am hoping that by chance someone here has an idea that might help, as I am about at the end of my rope and really need to get my system back up and running so I can get some projects completed. Any ideas are certainly welcomed and appreciated. This is my fourth Dell system and very well may be the last at the rate this is going.

My XPS 720 was shipped with a RAID 0 setup 2 years ago.

As I am going to upgrade from Vista to Win 7 I intend to do a fresh install first using Dell Factory Image Restore present on partition D.

Being unexperienced regarding Dell Factory Image Restore, here's my questions:

1. Will RAID 0 configuration be wiped out when running Factory Image Restore or will it remain intact?

2. Will I have to install chipset and network drivers or will this be done automatically through Dell Factory Image Restore?

3. Any other issues I need to be aware of (other than backing up data)

Recently had a flashing amber light and I jumped the green and black wires on the motherboard plug coming from the power supply and the fans worked as well as the computer.

I ran everything that I could to work the computer and it worked for two days until I shut it down and now it will not turn back on.

I pulled the motherboard to check for any noticeable problems as well as for any loose cold solder joints and all is well I also pulled the processor and heat sink to reset them as well.

I pulled the reset everything on the motherboard and still nothing so I checked the voltage from the power supply and it was bad so I replaced it but now the flashing amber light is a steady light and there are no lights on the rear of the computer but both fans are working.

The green power light on the motherboard still lights and the monitor starts up but then stay in the black mode.

Update from yesterday:

Just pulled out the battery and reset it back, the amber light is now green also the rear ABCD lights are all green as well but getting message \windows\system 32\config\system (windows could not start because the following is missing or

corrupt).

I am trying to repair this file but system will not allow me to do this using the OEM XP OS CD that came with the computer, what am I doing wrong!!!!!!!!

I can't use the keyboard to enter the BIOS (F2 or F12), but the keyboard works fine once in Vista. Tried different ports, same problem.

The Logitech keyboard works fine on other computers that I have. The stock Dell keyboard works fine on the Vostro 220.

Logitech seems to be pointing to a BIOS problem. I'm using the latest BIOS, v1.1.4.

Link to the keyboard:

I'm trying to run Citrix Xen 5.0 on here which installs on the bare metal fine- however when I create vm guests (x86 or x64) and try to start them up, I recieve the "HVM is required for this operation" message. This would indicate that my cpu didn't have the VT technology option enabled in the BIOS, however, I did set this to 'on'. So, as far as the BIOS is concerned, Virtualization is enabled for these logical cpu's.

I'm presuming that this is false however because I booted vt.iso and it verified that "VT is disabled in the feature control MSR" on both CPU 0 and 1.

Can anyone confirm whether this is false or not?
