I own a Dell 435T (which is now the 9000 series) since Fall 2009 so it's relatively new!

It has the i7 920 processor with Dell's ATI Radeon 4850 512mb card, 475W PSU and I've upgraded the memory to 9G and upgraded the HDD's so I have 3 1Tb drives. It still has 1 lone PCI slot and probably 2 PCI-E slots.

What else can I upgrade as I'd like to keep this baby for the next 3-5 years?

Please pardon me as I babble on....

I'm not a gamer but do a lot of video and music editing and, so far, it's holding up pretty well. The fan kicks in loudly upon boot up but basically quiets down during "normal" operations. It's the HDD that's a bit noisy when I'm processing or transferring files but that's fine too since it's relatively quiet at times.

I'm really a "newbie" when it comes to upgrading stuff like processor and PSU and video cards but, in this economy, I might as well "learn" how to upgrade components to keep costs relatively down.

I was thinking:

1. Processor - very pricey to upgrade but possible, may just wait another year or so for prices to drop. I read something about a "quick silver" thing that I'd need if I upgrade the processor. What is this? I'll have to look it up!

2. Graphic card - I Love the Dell ATI Radeon 4850 512mb card; it's considered one of the "best" 512mb cards based on my online research. Just recently, I was able to afford a 24" HD 1080p monitor! WOW! Great color and graphics! Just have to remember to do some work =;)

- Not sure if I need a 1G card yet as I know that I'll also "need" to upgrade the PSU since most video cards currently want more power such as 600W+ and don't know if 475W is adequate!

3. May add a dedicated sound card in the lone PCI slot as it's still hard to find an "affordable" PCI-E audio card! The onboard sound card isn't that bad, though!

4. Need to add some more USB ports but... the computer only has 1 PCI slot and I have Not found any USB PCI-E expansion cards (yet) as they're hard to find and may get pricey!

I just contacted Dell and it Still makes their current 8100 series with 375W PSUs and 9000 series with 475W PSUs! Why can't Dell just put in a standard600W PSU? It will save them (and us) money since there's only 1 type of PSU for All their desktops!!

Any suggestions???

Thinking of, at least, upgrading the PSU but don't know where to start. Read online that there's an ATX style PSU box what does that mean?? What type of tools are needed? Any add. wiring necessary for me to buy??

Is it relatively "simple" to upgrade a PSU and/or a video card??

I'm a "newbie" so any friendly advice and instructions would be most appreciated!!

Thank you very much =:)

Edit:

My apologies to everyone as I posted it in the Audio section by mistake!
This issue I need help resolving centers on Microsoft Office. It was pre-installed on the system when I ordered it from Dell. Since the parallel install, I no longer have access to those programs. I am looking for a way to retrieve the product key from my current files on the hard drive, then reinstall Office to the new version of XP. Does anyone know if this is possible?

I have a Dell Desktop Vostro 200 Windows Vista 32-bit. I have not had sound since last year, and ever since then i've been on a mission to regain sound. I've NEVER had a problem with my computer and sound until last year. I listened to my music on a daily basis via my computer and one day I shut it down, turned it back on the following day and NOTHING. Ever since then i've been trying everything under the sun to fix this problem, i've even been in contact with the windows vista techs so they could help me fix this problem and still nothing. I've gone to device maanager: sounds, game controllers... and scanned hardware for changes and nothing, i've gone to control panel and tried seeing what I could do there and still nothing. Nothing works at all, you name it and im sure i've tried it. I have RealTek HD. I've even scanned my computer while it was starting up (F8) and it did a "tone test" for the front and back speakers and they are working fine because I was able to hear sound. My computer tells me that nothing is wrong with my speakers at all. I've even bought several different speakers for my computer because it didn't come with any and none of them will work. I've come to realize that it isn't the speakers, it's my computer. Recently I had a BSOD and I re-started my computer to factory settings, so everything is how it was when I first bought this computer and all the stuff I had on it before was wiped out, and it STILL didnt fix the problem. Im tired of seeing that red X and reading "no audio output device installed," when im clearly looking at my speaker cord hanging from there. Also, i've done the uninstalling and re-installing for everything. I highly doubt it's the sound card being that I was able to hear sound during the "tone test" my computer did. Im at my wits end. So can someone PLEASE HELP ME!!! All help will be immensly appreciated. Sorry for giving you a story, I just wanted you to have all the facts before you attempted to help me. Once again, thank you.

Lost Desktop

Somehow I have lost my start menu and desktop. I can still access the Windows Vista tool bar, but my screen is black. Can anyone help?

sound

cant get any sound on my pc.
I set everything up and runs smooth, but no audio. I have updated the drivers with the retail drivers, uninstalled those and used the Dell driver webpage and installed those drivers to no avail.

If I plug my headphones into the front jack, audio comes through them. If I unplug, nothing from the speakers. The speakers are old Altec Lansings. There are 4 speakers and a sub. There are two lines for the speakers, a green and a black. I've tried moving those around to different spots on the back (there's 6 audio inputs) and that hasn't helped.

So, I figured I'd go ahead and ask myself before I pull out my hair...

I've got sound card issues. I have a Creative SoundBlaster X-Fi, it's the OEM card with my system. However from day one I've had problems with it. The annoyance right now is intermittent background clicking and other distracting noises when the system is just idling. If Media Player is the only application open then all is well, but launching Word, or Firefox, or Zune and I start getting intermittent background noises. This leads me to think it is performance related; when the system is idling it's fine, opening and running applications causes problems. I've heard of other occasions where an nVidia board and Creative SB produce snap, crackle and pop but those instances seem to involve an SLI graphics card; I've got an 8800GT, also OEM. It really annoys me to think this system might have been built with incompatible parts from Dell. So, phase 1: Is there a fix for this sticking with the X-Fi? (Sometimes it works for a while when everything is first hooked up, so I know it can do it!)

If there isn't I can try the on-board audio except I can't get the front headphone and mic jack to work when I switch over. I disconnected the lead to the sound card but they don't function. Do they need to be plug directly into the MoBo? I looked around but couldn't find anywhere to plug it and the manual doesn't mention this little detail, just configuring on-board audio in the BIOS.

Finally, if neither of these are possible and I install another sound card (I've got an ASUS Xonar standing by) will I be able to hook up the front panel mic and headphones (the mic is the most important)? I ask because I've heard that Dell's cable is proprietary, which is really dumb if the proprietary sound card is incompatible with the system board.

As a P.S. I'm also upgrading to 7 at some point; anyone know if that might change any of my current sound issues? I've also tried several different speakers and three different houses. Also of note, the front headphone jack works just fine, no static at all.

I really appreciate any insights on this as I'm at the end of my rope dealing with each successive problem. So thanks in advance guys!

XPS 420 rear mic jack is not working

XPS 420, Win7 and drivers are updated. I have been over the moon with the speakers they give a great sound... however, recently they have become useless as they only produce sound from the subwoofer and nothing throught the actual speakers??

The desktop itself i am having issues with and can't actually get on it to play around with any setting... it's broke and needs system restore, that's another story.

With reagrds to the speakers... they have randomly started to do this, I plugged them into my mp3 and ipod which i have done before fine with the jack socket... but now when i try that the sound is terrible. So, 2 queries.. does anyone know why it may be doing this and whether i can fix it? The wires seem fine etc? Secondly... i have warrenty for my computer with Dell.. do you think the speakers will be covered under this warrenty? I bought the computer and speakers as a package.

Many thanks!

I am experiencing problems with operating the CD/DVD player on my Optiplex 740 PC. Since buying it, it has always worked but for the past month, it does not read any CDs or DVDs. The tray light comes on but then nothing further happens.

What could be the problem? I went into Device drivers and received the following error message:

"Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41) Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device."

This Device cannot start. (Code 10).

When I click on Advance Volume Controls a window pops up with the following message, "There are no active mixer device available."

Another message I receive when I look within the Legacy Audio Drivers and Right click Properties, 'This device is working properly', yet there is no Driver Tab.

I have downloaded from the Dell site both drivers R124105 or the Sigmatec and R158714 drivers. Neither of which were successfully installed so I have uninstalled the downloads. When I try the Dell Download Mgr within Add/Remove Programs, I am informed that there are no files needed. As stated in the title the message I receive when I go to, Control Panel> Sounds Speech & Audio > Sounds & Audio Devices and look at Volume, I see No Audio Device, then looking under the Sounds Tab > Sound Scheme > nothing is selected. And when I choose Windows Default and choose Asterisk or any other selection under Program Events to listen to a system sound, I do not get the Play button highlighted. And finally when I click the Audio Tab nothing is highlighted under any of the following Sound Playback, Sound Recording or MIDI music Playback. Also under dimmed lettering reads in all 3 cases, No Playback Devices, No Recoding Devices and No MIDI Playback Devices.

If I could just figure out how to uninstall or install what is missing, but I have spent considerable time at this with total failure as my result.

No sounds except for a teeny tiny Windows error sound coming only from within the pc itself, not the speakers. My speakers work on another pc and another pc's speakers which work do not when plugged into this one

Dell E520

is the PC Code on the back

Background, some time ago when the pc was at another location they had to reintall the entire system software. Now that disk cannot be found. Would it be wise to go to downloads and jsut start from scratch? And if so the system download at this Dell site is only 3MB (roughly) not hardly enough I would think. Or I could just Restore my System. Any thoughts?

I have had this just about a year now and would like to fix the problem. Should I update the driver? Any suggestions?

Thanks Stevea51

downloading drivers for audio

i have a win xp dell harddrive was wiped op system installed no audio i tried to follow directions to download from dell save to desktop double click on it but when i do all i see is contents of the file mumbo jumbo it is supposed to start some download wizzard but nothing happens and i cant download the file any help would be app

Microphone system for my Dell

Maybe I'm just not techno, but I'm trying to use Skype with a good friend and I can see him and hear him, but he can't hear me (I don't have a web cam yet). It keeps telling me that my microphone is very quiet, but I've gone through all the troubleshooting. Where is my microphone or do I have to go get a separate microphone? Please help.
