I'm an Italian student in communication, marketing and advertisment. I m writing my thesis on corporate social responsibility, and I chose Dell for my case history to illustrate what I wrote in the theorical part.

I'm interested in the global recycling program, and I was wondering who are your partners to achieve this proccessus. Also, as my subject is more specificly on green jobs, how could I get informations on new jobs created and the number of peolple hired (whether in Dell or in your partner's companies) thanks to this global recycling program.

I bought a dell computer and it came with grey styrofoam to protect my purchase. Do you know the content of the styrofoam and if it gives off any gases? The reason i am asking is, I work in a costume and textiles museum and we would like to reuse the product but need to know if would damage the historical clothing/products we have. thanks for all the help!

Hi everyone,

has anyone had the chance to directly compare the noise emission of the Adamo and the MacBook pro? I am looking for a very quiet notebook, especially when using it in a wireless network while streaming media . Most notebooks under these conditions start running their fan at high speed and sound like a hairdryer, which often disturbs enjoying the actual playback. How does the Adamo perform under these conditions?

This is how the noise emissions of the MacBookpro are described (and I experienced it myself, the MacBook "breathes"):

Noise Emissions

The noise of the fan is and always was an advantage of Apple notebooks. The designers focused more on a quiet operating noise and accepted higher case temperatures. In standard desktop use this is a clear advantage.

Under Mac OS X the fans run (even with short full load periods like Xbench) nearly permanently with about 2800 rpm under usual load. This is accompanied by a silent noise, which is only audible in absolutely quiet environments - measured 31.5 cm in a 10 cm distance). Even when running with active 9600M GT in performance mode, the fans are not really louder (with low to usual load).

However, under Windows only (only the 9600M GT graphics is available) we were able to bring the fan to higher speeds. When running games the fan of this aluminium PC reached up to 5500 rpm. Here the noise level of 47 dB(A) is clearly audible. Nevertheless, the noise characteristics stays acceptable.

To summarize, the MacBook Pro 5.1 can be called a very quiet notebook (especially under Mac OS X), which can also get quite loud in extreme situation.

Todd, Can You Solve This Green Dilemma?

My daughter has a Dell Inspiron E1405. We ordered a new battery for her while she was living in Argentina. Brought the battery down to her when we went to visit at Christmas. Turns out it was COMPETELY wrong--wouldn't even come near to fitting in her computer. By the time we got back from Argentina, however, Dell's self-imposed 30-day limit for fixing its self-created problems expired.

I was so glad to see that Dell now has a commitment to being green, because I'm sitting here with a brand new battery that is probably filled with toxic stuff. What am I supposed to do with it? Throw it away (plus its $150 price tag?) This doesn't seem like a very green approach, but it seems the only one open to me. Can the new green Dell help me?

I have a Dimension 9200 desktop purchased about 2 years ago, it has the latest software Vista, Office 2007 etc but I would like to get the added performance from the new i7 chips and DDR3 RAM. Unfortunately the only way to do this is throw out the existing system and buy a whole new one. Why why why can't Dell offer an upgrade option?

I just installed a MSI R4830-T2D512 4830 video card on my Dell inspiron 530. My current PSU is only 350w but the manufacturer of the card recommends a 450w PSU. I figured I could at least boot the thing up and play around with it. To my dismay, the monitor is telling me "No input signal" even though the fan on the card is running. I'm new to upgrading PCs so I'm sort of besides myself. Could the inadequate PSU prevent my monitor from recognizing the card? Someone please help!

I have one of these that is still plugged into the wall and we are looking to move this PDU and the servers attached to another location and so I can't unplug it yet but I want to have the electrical in place at the other location. I have looked for hours on the internet to find specs on this part number 3T765. I was wondering if someone here could tell me what type of plug this unit has... i know it is 220 but do not know the plug type... Thanks in Advance!

Dell Financial wants people to use paperless statements. If Dell Financial would remove the Fee(I think it's $15) maybe more people would pay their bill online. I use snail mail because stamps are not $15, yet!!!

I figure the producers of this advertisement must be of a very young, self-centered generation -- so young as not to remember the ever-popular elephant-foot umbrella stands. I find this commercial so repulsive I change the channel every time I see it. What were they thinking? Elephant-foot umbrella stands could be seen just about everywhere when I was growing up, and I was only born in the 60's! So What gives? Why would DELL use images so painfully disgusting and hurtful to sell a computer? How do I use the Axim x50 on Vista?

the company and recently upgraded my laptop to Windows Vista. I tried to load the software on the new laptop that came with the Axim to begin using it again

but it won't work. Any suggestions? i'm already disgusted that I lost all the contacts and file info that was on it but I'd like to at least start over with it.

At the risk of turning this into a flame war, I thought I'd tread into the dangerous forum territory of politics and energy.

If you haven't been living in a cave for the past week, you've heard by now that Barack Obama won the election to become President of the United States. Obama (and McCain both) made green energy and the green economy a big part of his campaign, even to the point of having it called his "number 1 priority" by one of his aides.

Where is all this going (if anywhere)? What changes will need to be made for the US to truly become a leader in the green movement?

Or is this all just more political hot air to win votes and make us feel better?

Solar Power and Battery Indicator

I have recently purchased a solar panel with the intention of using it to provide power for my Dell laptop during an expedition. We are at the early stages of expedition planning at the moment , and I've been put in charge of the IT side of things... Having never tried this before I'm still at the experemental stage so I wondered if anyone could answer the following:

When the laptop is off and plugged into the solar charger the battery indicator comes on, showing that the battery is charging.

With the laptop switched on the battery indicator goes out. This is understandable, as the laptop will draw more power when it is running than it does when it is simply charging the battery.

I'd like to know whether the absence of the battery light when the laptop is switched on indicates:

1) that the laptop is not using the power from the solar panel at all

2) that it is using the power from the solar panel, but also drawing power from the battery (i.e. it requires more power than is being provided by the solar panel alone).

My laptop is a Dell Inspiron 6000. The solar panel I am using is a Sunlinq30 which is capable of prividing up to 30W of power. I link the two together using a 12V Dell DC travel power adapter (the sort that runs of a car cigarette lighter).

I have run some tests on the laptop and found that it draws a maximum of 40Watts when running (screen on max brightness, wireless on, hard disk and processorbusy) so I understand that the power I get from the panel will not be enough to power the laptop completely, however, my hope is that if 2) above is true, I should be able to run the laptop for a couple of days (8 hours/day) on a single battery charge because the battery will only be providing "top-up" power to the laptop, rather than powering it completely.

Finally...

Before someone suggests that I leave the setup running all day to test it, I live in a location where the sun isn't bright enough to run the solar panel for more than a few minutes per day. The final expedition will be in Africa, so there will be no problem running it "in the field", however it's a long way to go just to run a pre-expedition test on the solar panels!

It is showing I have a 30-day activation period from Microsoft for some reason, yet I have had this computer since 7-08. She gave me all disks and paperwork, so it is not a soft-copy piracy.

I am trying to find out what the best ways are to conserve energy usage, ballanced with convenience. I have typivcally left my computer on 24/7 and realized that leaving the computer and monitor on costs quite a bit. In fact I think the 375 Watt power supply is more than my refrigerator uses. First question - With a 375 Watt power supply is the computer actually drawing that much power when running? 2. Is it worth hybernating the computer, and how much does that actually save? What about sleep mode, powering down the hard drive and other options in the Power Plans? I would appreciate it is someone could shed some light on the subject.

Hi, i was looking at the Epeat standard and Dell's computer compliance with it. Am'I wright to think that looking at the SAFETY, EMC & ENVIRONMENTAL DATASHEET of the Optiplex and Vostro it's all coming down to a 80+ psu and an underpowered as in lower speed system. Meaning if Dell was to ship it product with 80+ psu it would therefore comply with Energy star criteria and as a result to Epeat ?

A number of Dell's customers are interested in understanding more about the company's manufacturing practices dovetail with their own responsible sourcing programmes. Is anyone able to share with me the detail of the management practices and operating standards that are applied within Dell's production facilities?

As a supplier, Dell is often now asked to contribute to questionnaires hosted by organisations such as SEDEX (http://www.sedex.org.uk), run by independent third-parties focused on ethical sourcing.

I'd be very interested in any sources for information pertaining to the ethical sourcing aspect of the Dell supply chain?

Over the years, Coppell Independent School District has bought many products from your company, and we have done our part to save the environment and conserve energy by recycling the boxes they come in. Are you doing yours? When our class toured the computer lab, we saw firsthand the manuals and boxes piled up, and we were astonished. Here at Coppell High School, we have experienced massive amounts of unnecessary trash after your last shipment. Our hallways were cluttered with piles and piles of garbage, bags of Styrofoam, stacks of cardboard and extra manuals. It will take time to dispose of the waste because the recycling containers and dumpsters here at the school are not large enough for such massive amounts of waste. The technology department reported that there were boxes inside of the boxes that contained copies of software and manuals that could be obtained online. We are currently trying to reduce the unrecyclable products located at our school. For many years your company has been using harmful packaging materials and they are impacting our environment.

We believe that in order for your company to be more conservative, you need to change a few of your common packaging procedures. Add an additional question to your ordering process, giving the consumer the option of choosing the number of manuals required instead of including them automatically with each computer; use “air pillows” when possible instead of Styrofoam to reduce the amount of waste produced in shipping. The Styrofoam is particularly frustrating since it goes to the landfill and does not break down. Another option is to use new paper stuffing that is made out of recycled cardboard. This stuffing product is thicker and more stable than the pillows but can still be recycled with paper. And really, what were we going to do with over a hundred of the same manual? The lab technician said they will only keep one. Ask the consumer if they need a manual instead of automatically including it.

Air pillows are currently being used by Amazon.com instead of Styrofoam. Air pillows take less room, and are more environmentally friendly since they can be recycled. Also, if you were to use more efficient, smaller boxes and less Styrofoam for your product by “right sizing” your products and not package boxes inside your boxes, there would be less cardboard to recycle. Perhaps on large shipments like ours, multiple computers could be shipped in one box. The computer itself should also be made of recycled materials, preferably from obsolete computers.

Changing the way you package your products would benefit the environment and your company. If you change to more environmentally friendly materials and supplies you will save money, space and time. Also, it can only help your reputation. Not only is it important to decrease pollution, we need to form systemic plans where we consume less. Saving warehouse space with smaller packaging materials will reduce the need to build larger buildings; not printing manuals for every computer will save ink, chemicals and money required for printing; using smaller boxes would save on shipping costs, and allowing customers to view your company as environmentally friendly could cause an increase in sales. Each of these suggestions not only increases your profits but benefits our environment. Please take our views into consideration to save our environment for all future generations.

Hi, not sure if this is the right place to post this, but seemed worth a try.

I read some time ago that Dell would be phasing out all brominated flame retardants & PVC by 2009. Does that mean that the new Latitude E laptops are BFR- & PVC-free? I'm looking at the Latitude E4300, which is one of the newest Latitudes. Does anyone have any information on the chemical content of that laptop, including & beyond BFR & PVC? I have a 6-month-old baby, & since whatever laptop I get now will be in my life for 3-4 years I really want to avoid those chemicals. Unfortunately my old laptop died this summer & I'm using an ancient loaner from work, so I don't have the luxury of waiting that long for Dell to phase them out if by "by 2009" they meant the end of 2009 :(
