Getting constant "Unable to locate" error messages...

Messages read "This application has failed to start b/c netkmfd.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem."

Reviewed the "Please Read This Before Posting For Malware Removal Help" article and followed all directions in that article (as everything I reviewed lead me to beleve I have a Malware issue). Below is the log from HiJackThis...

Re: Getting constant "Unable to locate" error messages...

Welcome. Thank you for using Dell Community Forums.

I am reviewing your log. In the meantime, you can help me by addressing the following:

* Have you have posted this issue on another forum? If so, please provide a link to the topic.

* If you have disabled System Restore in an attempt to begin cleaning malware, please enable it now. We will flush System Restore when we are finished cleaning and we are sure that everything is running smoothly.

* If you are using any cracked software, please remove it. In addition to being illegal, when you install cracked software, you are running executable files from dubious, unknown sources. You are giving these sources access to information on your hard disk, and potential control over operation of your computer. Definition of cracked software HERE.

* If you are using any P2P (file sharing) programs, please remove them before we clean your computer.  The nature of such software and the high incidence of malware in files downloaded with them is counter productive to restoring your PC to a healthy state. That includes BitTorrent and similar programs. There is a partial list HERE.

* If this computer belongs to someone else, do you have authority to apply the fixes we will use?

* After we begin working, please print or copy all instructions to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out procedures. Please follow all instructions in sequence. Do not, on your own, install/re-install any programs or run any fixes or scanners that you have not been instructed to use because this may cause conflicts with the tools that I am using. Please note that these fixes are not instantaneous. Most infections require more than one round to properly eradicate. It is understood by the trained analysts that once a helper replies to a log, he continues working with you until the issue is resolved.

* During the course of our cleanup please do not do any additional online work or surfing until we have verified that your system is clean.

* We may be using some specialized tools during our fix. Certain embedded files that are part of legitimate programs or specialized fix tools such as process.exe, restart.exe, SmiUpdate.exe, reboot.exe, ws2fix.exe, prcviewer.exe and nircmd.exe may at times be detected by some anti-virus/anti-malware scanners as a "RiskTool", "Hacking tool", "Potentially unwanted tool", or even "malware (virus/trojan)" when that is not the case. Such programs have legitimate uses in contexts where an authorized user or administrator has knowingly installed it. These detections do not necessarily mean the file is malware or a bad program. It means it has the potential for being misused by others. Anti-virus scanners cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert you or even automatically remove them.

I look forward to your reply so we can begin cleaning.

Instructions posted for this user are customized for this user only. The tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections. If you think you have similar problems, please post a log at the top of this board to start a new forum topic.

Re: Getting constant "Unable to locate" error messages...

Thank you for responding to my issue - it's greatly appreciated and have noticed your name on several issues where you've helped other users. I must admit that I'm a novice so may need a little more help and direction than others but will do the best I can to make this simple.

I haven't posted this issue on any other forums; have not disable System Restore (as frankly I'm not sure how to do so); am not using any cracked software or P2P programs; I'm the main user of this PC as this is a home, family PC.

Thanks again for your time and attention to this matter!

Re: Getting constant "Unable to locate" error messages...

Thank you for replying. I'll try to make my instructions as simple as possible. If there is anything that you do not understand just ask.

Please download to your desktop Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, Photobucket
    Click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Notes)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the entire report into your next reply. Also include a fresh HijackThis log.

Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process; if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

If you encounter this message:
"c:\program files\malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamext.dll
Unable to register the dll/ocx: RegSvr32 failed with exit code 0x5"
Click on ignore mbamext.dll

* If you are unable to download or install MBAM on your computer, see if you can use a friend's or family member's computer to download MBAM. Use the update link mentioned above to manually update. Once downloaded, rename the program installer "mbam-setup.exe" file to something else like "kschudy.exe". Copy the installer file and the update file to a CD or flash drive. Transfer the files to the infected computer. Install the "kschudy.exe" file, then run the update so that you will have the current definitions. After that, run a full system scan and select to have the program REMOVE whatever it finds.

**If you need to re-install MBAM but encounter issue in re-installing, try using the MBAM Cleanup Utility by downloading it from HERE

Re: Getting constant "Unable to locate" error messages...

Your MBAM database is outdated. It should be at least 3130. Please update and run MBAM again. Don't forget to reboot after the scan to complete MBAM's cleanup.

Following that, please run an online virus scan by Kaspersky from HERE.

    1. At the main page. Press on "Accept". After reading the contents.
    2. At the next window Select Update. Allow the Database to update.
Note: If prompted to run or update your Java, then follow the prompts to do so. Kaspersky requires Java to run.
    3. Once the Database has finished, under the Scan icon Select My Computer to start the scan. The scan may take a few minutes to complete.
    4. Select Scan Report.
    5. If any threats were found they will appear in the report
    6. Select "Save error report as"
Then in the file name just type in kaspersky
Under "save as type" select text .txt
    Save it to your Desktop.

Copy and post the results of the latest MBAM scan and the Kaspersky Online scan. If no threats were found then report that as well.

Re: Getting constant "Unable to locate" error messages...

I attempted to update and run MBAM again, using the other link you provided, but recv'd the same results:

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.41
Database version: 3130
Windows 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3

11/8/2009 3:47:08 PM

I then attempted to run the Kaspersky scan, but was unsuccessful on three attempts. I uploaded what I though was the current/necessary version of Java, but cont'd to get this message:

Kaspersky Online Scanner 7.0 download and operation require Java framework version 1.5 or later.

I rebooted and tried it again, but then recv'd a message that I have the current version of Java.

Tried again and after ~ 30 minutes of checking, recv'd the same message.

I apologize as I don't seem to be making any headway and continue to get the same error messages.

Re: Getting constant "Unable to locate" error messages...

You're doing fine. These things take time and are rarely a one-shot fix. Kaspersky was checking to see if you have the correct version of Java to run the scan. Did you follow the next prompts and proceed with the scan after that?

Re: Getting constant "Unable to locate" error messages...

It wouldn't allow me to scan with the version of Java I have (although Java tells me I'm updated w/the latest version). Will try again and report back.

Re: Getting constant "Unable to locate" error messages...

Here's what I recv'd after attempting to update Java. Unfortuately Kapersky still won't allow me to run the scan.

Verifying Java Version

Congratulations!

You have the recommended Java installed (Version 6 Update 17).

Re: Getting constant "Unable to locate" error messages...

Once it checks your Java, it should allow you to proceed to the page that runs the scan. Perhaps your anit-virus is interfering. Try disabling that before you have KAV check your Java.

To disable CA Anti-virus:

1 Right click on CA Antivirus icon near the clock (a shield).
2. Click on CA Anti-Virus > Snooze Anti-Virus Protection.
3. When prompted, enter the longest time avalable (if Indefinitely is there use that) and click on Snooze.

If that does not work, keep CA AV disabled and please perform an online scan here:
http://www.eset.eu/online-scanner
This scan works best with IE. Alternate browsers require downloading and installing the ESET Smart Installer.
* Accept the Terms of Use:
* Approve the install of the required ActiveX Control, then follow on-screen instructions.
* Disable the protection of your resident anti-virus program after installing the
active X control that Eset has installed and again when you actually start scanning.
* Make sure enable (check) the Remove found threats option is checked, and run the scan.
* After the scan completes, the Details tab in the Results window will display what was found and removed.

A record of these results will be found here: C:\program files\esetonlinescanner\log.txt. Please include a copy of that log in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.
This online scan may take quite a bit of time to complete so please be patient. If necessary, allow the scan to run overnight. Please do not use the machine to do anything else (e.g. browse; check email; chat) until the scan completes. Don't forget to enable your CA Anti-Virus when the scan is finished.

Was still unable to run the KAV scan even after disabling my CA protection so ran the ESET scan w/the following results:

Re: Getting constant "Unable to locate" error messages...

I'm going to suggest that you run a powerful tool. You will need to follow the instructions carefully. You will need to disable your anti-virus again before running this tool.

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

* Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of its process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue its malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log for further review.

Notes:

1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.

3. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.

4. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you -- please tell your helper.

5. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

* Additional information on A/V control HERE. * ComboFix is not intended for use with servers.

Re: Getting constant "Unable to locate" error messages...

Followed your directions and ran CF. No longer receiving error messages and below is the CF log; hopefully this fixed the problem on the first run. It gave me a warning that my CA anti-virus was still enabled, but took all the necessary steps to disable. The only program that may have been running was CA's PureSight, of which the icon no longer shows in the tab. Nonetheless, looking forward to your feedback...

Re: Getting constant "Unable to locate" error messages...

It appears that there was some component of CA Anti-Virus still running.  Fortunately, it did not interfere.

I want to make sure everything is in order before we remove ComboFix.

  • Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool.
  • Click Yes at the prompt for Optional Scan.
  • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs
  • 1. DDS.txt
    2. Attach.txt

  • Save both reports to your desktop.
  • Copy/paste both logs to your reply on the forum.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
  • Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet. Information on A/V control HERE.
