CD/DVD not working on Optiplex GX620

Recently purchased a refurbished Optiplex GX620 from Dell Outlet.  Plugged it in and can't get the CD/DVD drive to read anything; audio or program CDs, or DVDs.  Tried to uninstall and reinstall the CD/DVD driver (TSST Corp CDRWDVD TS-H492C), but that didn't help.  System came with XP installed (which is what I normally run).  Can't load any programs.  Very frustrating.  I'm not highly conversant in tech speak, but follow directions well.  Any suggestions for how to get the CD/DVD drive working?  Thanks!

Does the drive appear in My Computer?  

If you insert a CD and righ-click and select Explore, can you see the disc contents?

The drive does appear in My Computer.  This morning it actualy read 2 discs (woohoo!!) before it decided that was enough.  Now it won't read any more, and nothing shows up when I right-click and select Explore.  I've tried restarting the computer several times.  So, it CAN read discs, just not all of the time.  I've tried updating the drivers, but I supposedly have the most current version.  Could a loose connection inside the box itself cause such a problem?  Thanks!

Hi, Amywoo:

Try running the Dell diagnostics on your drive. Run the READ test on a couple different data CDs.

The procedure is as follows. When you boot your system, hit F12 then choose Utility Partition. You want to run a custom test on just the CD drive.

I have an optiplex 620 and i have tried resrting bios, updating bios, installed a new battery . i have even tried new ribbon cables 5 different drives including the one from my main pc and they do not show up in bios

Hi, kypitbull:

Your system has IDE optical drives. You MUST set the drive jumper to cable select. This is the default configuration for all Dells. Otherwise the drive may appear as "unknown" or not be recognized at all.
