CD/DVD Drives not being recognized after RAM upgrade

Hello,

I have a dimesion 8400 running XP.   I recently upgraded from 1gb to 2 gb of RAM using DELL memory to replace memory that cane with computer.  The upgrade worked fine as the memory is concerned but now the computer does not recognize my two cd/dvd rw drives.  The are not shown anywhere in my computer, device manager, or computer setup menu.  Please let me know if anyone has had a similar issue or might know what is causing this.  Thanks.

Re: CD/DVD Drives not being recognized after RAM upgrade

Hi, montegrip:

Since the addition of RAM is unlikely to cause a registry issue, I'm inclined to believe you jostled the IDE cable when you installed your RAM. Open the case and pull it out and re-seat it. Here is a diagram showing its location. When booting, hit F2 to enter system setup to verify both drives are listed.

If you see both drives in the BIOS but they are still not visible in Windows, the next thing to try would be the old upper/lower filter trick, which is described in the CD/DVD FAQ under "code 39 error".

osprey4,

Yes, I just reached the same conclusion moments before reading this.  The cable did not look like it had been moved but re-seating it worked and I am up and running.  I appreciate your quick response.
