XPS/Dimension XPS Gen 5 No sound

I have a Dell XPS/Dimension XPS Gen 5  that I had to re load Windows XP Media Center 2005.  When I did I get no sound.  When I start up the windows music starts to play then nothing.  I have tried everything in the trouble shooting guide and in the help section.  I have the sound blaster audigy 2 XS and it shows as working. I looked under the device manager and there is no question mark for audio.  Hope that is all the info you need.

Re: XPS/Dimension XPS Gen 5 No sound

When you reinstalled Windows, did you install the Intel chipset drivers?  They are required as the chipset drivers define the devices on or attached to the motherboard.  Also, did you reinstall the Del or SoundBlaster Audigy 2ZS sound drivers?

On a new install the correct and required install sequence is (1) Install Windows (2) Install chipset drivers (3) Install device drivers.

If you did install the chipset drivers and the SoundBlaster Audigy 2ZS drivers, then uninstall the Audigy 2ZS in the Device Manager, then restart the PC and Windows will detect and reinstall it.  Sometimes the status can be corrupted with Windows and the reinstall fixes that.

Yes I did all of that.  Thanks.  I just shut down and restarted and it played the entire windows start up song then went back to no sound again.

Since you have a separate sound card, make sure the Integrated Audio is disabled in the BIOS.  I've seen problems like you are having because the Integrated Audio (on the motherboard audio) was enabled and conflicting with the SoundBlaster.
