Cannot run Windows 7 pro 64 bit setup file on XPS 730 with Intel Q9450

Can the XPS 730 with Intel Q9450 run Windows 7 64 bit? The performance details indicate that it is 64 bit capable. When I try to install Windows 7 pro 64 Bit upgrade, the setup file will not run. I receive an error that reads:

The version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you are running.

I am currently running Vista Ultimate 32 bit. Everything I have read on Microsoft and elsewhere says that you can upgrade from Vista 32 bit to a 64 bit Windows 7 OS as long as you do the clean install. I cannot get that far since I cannot even run setup.

I was running Windows 7 RC1 on this machine for several months with no problems at all but it was only available to download the 32 bit version.

I am not sure if there are some components or chipsets that are not compatible or if I need to run the full version of Win 7 64 bit.

Does anyone possibly know what the problem might be?

The problem is Windows 7 will only let you "upgrade" to the same version or bit level of Vista you have now.  If you want to install 64 bit you will have to do a complete new install, either to a reformatted hard drive, a new hard drive, or (the least desireable) a partition on the existing hard drive.

Even with Vista 64 bit installed, I went from Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Professional and had to do a complete new insttall too.  It wasn't really a problem as I had bought a new hard drive to do that anyway.

Thanks very much for the feedback.

Just to be clear, I have deleted my drive partition, created a new one and formatted and I cannot even run the setup file. My Windows 7 pro 64 is a downlaod file from the Microsoft Student Purchase site. I do not have a disk. their website says if requested, they will send a link to the .iso file and from there I can create an install DVD.

Do you believe that I need to have the disk to get this to work?

Thanks again,

Yes, it sounds like a bootable disc will be needed for your install.
