memory upgrade for dimension e510

hello,

i am thinking about  a memory upgrade. i've looked at different websites and have a question. i've noticed the memory chips have different speeds. do i have to match the speed of the pair that is already installed in my computer?  if i can get a different speed for the new pair, does it have to be a higher speed?

Re: memory upgrade for dimension e510

You can mix memory speeds but what will happen is all the memory will run at the speed of the slowest memory. So if you were to have 2 gig of 400mhz ram and 2 gigs of 800 mhz ram, all the memory would run at 400 mhz. This would kinda make putting the higher speed ram in a waste.

So the standard fare is If you want to go with faster memory you should replace all the memory at the same time.
