Search Engine Redirects

Hi All,

This is a new one for me. Whenever I do a search on Yahoo or Google, when the search results post and I try to click on one of the results, instead of opening the desired site, I'm redirected to something else (ad, retailer, etc.) On Yahoo specifically, if I see I'm not being taken to what I wanted, I hit the back button immediately and try again. It will, on average, take me 4 to 5 clicks (each time being redirected to a different unwanted site) until I finally get what I was looking for. Google is not so bad but it does happen there also. I have run AVG as well as Malwarebytes and Adaware and they have all come up clean. Any ideas what I'm looking at here? Thanks.

Hi chipmeister:

If you are using Toolbars, this can happen. Especially the Ask toolbar in its various disguised forms.

I advise against using most toolbars for this reason.

Can you tell us what browser you are using, and what toolbars are installed?

Hi,

well, I'm using Internet Explorer 6.0 and except for IE's address bar, I have no toolbars installed. Hope that helps.

due a scan with super anti spyware free editions, because chances are you are infected, let me know how you make out. Also due a scan with each in safe mode, also unless you paid for avg get rid of it, it's junk use either Microsoft security essentials or avria free, if you want to pay use kaspersky but if you use kaspersky make sure your system can handle it

Not to say that it's the cause of your problem, but IE 6 is VERY old and should be updated, ideally to IE 8 (unless you're running Win98/ME, which can't upgrade IE any higher than 6).

I'm pretty sure which I know you stated that, it is not the problem because most sites you go on say minimum viewing requirement internet explorer 6.0 or later, and from what I've seen the problem he is describing is some form of malware.

Chipmeister:

What operating system/service pack do you use (XP/sp3, Vista, etc), and is it up-to date with Windows security patches?

If SAS doesn't find anything, then I think an online AV scan for a "2nd opinion" is in order. I can recommend:

http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/

Be sure to read the system requirements to ensure your system can handle the scan.

Re: Search Engine Redirects

That's also a good idea, recomend you try a bunch of them since no antivirus detects everything I also recommend running combofix

Re: Combofix,

its author (sUBs)  includes a disclaimer to the effect that "it should never be used in an unsupervised environment".   It is a very powerful tool which, under knowledgeable guidance, can indeed remedy many malware problems.   However, improper/indiscriminate use may have detrimental consequences, and so --- in deference to its author's expressed intent  ---  its "routine usage" is discouraged by most members of the anti-malware community.

I understand that but it would lead to a faster solution, because it's very good for removing malware and alot of it

You cannot be sure of that because you do not know if ComboFix will run on that system without having problems, and you do not know what type of malware you are dealing with. Not only is casually suggesting such a solution risky for the user, but as ky331 mentioned, when you run ComboFix the Disclaimer is displayed:

Someone trained in its use needs to be supervising because ComboFix is a work in progress and is always changing to address new situations. Your helper needs to be in regular contact with the tool's Developer. If there is a problem with a specific version, a trained helper can advise on how to correct the situation.

If there is a malware problem that cannot be handled on this forum I suggest posting on the Malware Removal Forum or on one of many others listed by Trend Micro in the recommended sites section on the left side of this page: http://hjt-data.trendmicro.com/hjt/analyzethis/index.php

Please post at only ONE so you do not tie up two or more helpers working on the same issue.
