Dell Dimension 3000 Not Starting Properly

I have a dell dimension 3000 that wont start properly.

When i press the button the light LEDs come on, the fan come on, all for a split second.
Then everything shuts off.

I checked the switch and made sure it is OK.

I made sure the connections from power supply to motherboard is firmly seated.
There is a green LED on the motherboard that is lit when the power cable is connected to system and plugged into outlet.

I also plugged the power cable into another working receptacle, same thing still occurs.

I disconnected power from all of the drives, then tried again, same thing occurs.

The only awkward thing is that when I remove the P2(4 pin) power connector from the motherboard and try again, then the system starts up but there is no video, not booting activity.

I put the P2 connector back on the motherboard and try to start but the same thing happens, the LEDs, the fan, etc come on all for a split second  . . .  then everything shuts off.

Any idea as to what is happening?
Appreciate any help.

When this happens, is the reading of the power button LED, is it solid green, blinking green, solid amber, blinking amber?

Check the sequence of the DIAGNOSTIC LIGHTS on the back panel of the case.

Re: Dell Dimension 3000 Not Starting Properly

shesagordie,

Thanks for responding.

This is a wierd problem, but now the system is starting up OK.

I'm believing that it may have been relating to the ambient temperature at the time.

The only difference now is that the system was off for more than 24 hours and the room is a bit cooler now than when I was trying to get it started last time.

I don't know if Dell systems startup is affected by the surrounding temperature.

Nonetheless, thanks.

I will have to continue to monitor it for any further power problems.

Good luck and hope that you have no further problems.

The PC should not be effected by day to day temperature changes.

Have you recently checked that the inside of case, fans, heatsink's cooling fins and the front panel air intakes have no dust buildup?

Is there adequate free space around the case, especially behind the back panel?

Re: Dell Dimension 3000 Not Starting Properly

This may have been silly on my part to neglect including but I did remove a significant amount of accumulated dust from the case and the heatsink area.

In hindsight, this may have been the culprit.

Thanks.

Yep, it could have been the problem.

Have a great weekend.
