Welcome, PLEASE READ FIRST (Updated 11/01/2009)

Hello and Welcome to the Dell Networking, Internet and Wireless forum.

The purpose of this forum sticky is for forum members to suggest and give you helpful tips on getting your wireless devices working. So let's keep those suggestions coming in.

We ask that if you have a problem after reading the suggestions from other members, please make a new thread. Please do NOT post in the sticky unless it is a helpful tip to share with others. It will make it easier for everyone to share the knowledge better. Have something to add, please click on contact and send me a friends request, then we can discuss adding it to make it easier to find for other forum members.

Thanks.

Here are a few suggestions that I have to get things started.

Problems connecting with Internet Explorer 8. Some wireless cards become disabled with Internet Explorer 8. Also AOL users cannot connect. Remove Internet Explorer 8 and everything works, again.(as of 4/23/09)

Mobile Broadband Card and IE8 Connection problems {SOLVED}

After a clean installation of the Operating System the Wireless doesn't work

Setup should look like...

Wall > ISP Modem/Router > Wireless router(if any) > Wired/wireless

If using DSL, a DSL Filter MUST be on ALL devices, phone, answering machine, faxes, etc..., everything EXCEPT the DSL Modem/Router.

You may share a DSL Filter.

Wall > DSL Filter > Splitter > Multiple Devices

Recommended Wireless Router Settings

Actually WPA2-PSK(TKIP) Personal Security is the way to go but not all wireless devices will work with WPA2. So this is why we are currently sticking with WPA-PSK(TKIP) Personal Security.

How to repair a connection

Sometimes connections fail due to power flickers. Try turning off your ISP Modem/Router, your wireless router and your computer for 60 seconds, then restart them and see if you can connect. Usually this happens during electrical storms and when there are power interuptions. Doing this resets everything back and then the connection resumes as normal.

Wireless N Routers

There are different types of Wireless N Routers, just Wireless N and Dual Band Wireless N Routers.

Wireless N brodcasts on 5.8gh range.

Wireless b/g broadcasts on the 2.4gh range.

***Unless you have a dual band Wireless N router, all the computers on your network will need a Wireless N Card/Adapter or they will not be able to connect to your network.***

Cordless phones

Cordless phones that are 2.4GHz use the same frequencies that wireless roiuters use(A,B,G)

Cordless phones that are 5.8GHz use the same frequencies that wireless routers use(N)U

Using a cordless phone can and will interfere with your connection.

Tweak that wireless card

Windows has a feature that turn off the wireless card to save power. Here is how to keep the wireless card from turning off.

Go to device manager(right click my computer, left click properties, left click hardware, left click device manager). Click on Network and then right click on your wireless adapter, left click properties, power management. Uncheck the box, allow computer to turn off this device to save power.

After a clean installation of the Operating System the Wireless doesn't work.

This is usually caused because the drivers were not installed and/or not in the proper order.

The Desktop/Laptop Utility needs to be installed first and then the Chipset Drivers or the other drivers will NOT install.

How to Install Drivers in Microsoft® Windows® on Dell Systems

Since the operating system was re-installed did you remember to go to drivers and downloads, enter your service tag(DO NOT POST SERVICE TAG here or your post will get deleted, since it contains your personal information), and install these drivers in this order.

Idea Hint Idea When downloading the drivers, make a folder for each drivers and name it with the device it belongs with to make it easier to install them in the proper order.

Desktop System Software or Notebook System Software

Chipset or SMBus driver

Processor Driver (if applicable)

Video

Audio (sound)

Input Drivers (keyboard/mouse)

Modem

Network Card

QuickSet(Laptop only)

This is pretty much a Read-Only thread, therefor I just locked it. (I think.)
