Boot Error message "Checkpoint D0"

Hmmm.  So they DO monitor these forums.

Interesting that they'll delete posts and threaten people, but don't offer any actual support.

This is my first Dell PC and probably will be my last.

Will escalate this. My assumption is all have tried this?

* Load the Latest Bios
* On restart go into the bios
* On the Main screen, press F9 to load the Setup Defaults
* Open Boot
* Make sure your Hard Drive is first in the list and Optical Drive is second
* Exit the Bios saving your changes
* Once into windows, shut down
* Power on. Do you still get the error? If yes, shutdown
* Disconnect all USB devices except for mouse and keyboard
* Power on. Do you get the error?
* If not, plug one USB device in and reboot checking for the error. Do this until you find the device causing the error

Speaking for myself, although I think the others are having the same problem, this will work but won't solve the problem.  I can reboot to my heart's content without getting the error, AS LONG AS I NEVER LET THE PC SLEEP.  That's the "fix" that works for me, but it won't get me an Energy Star award.

This problem is complex, Chris, and will not be resolved with the measures you have listed above. It is not related to attached peripherals and persists after motherboard replacement, BIOS updating and loading BIOS defaults. I have seen the error messages indicating checkpoints D1, B1, DE and D0 at different times. It appears to occur only after the computer (435MT in my case) has been asleep. I can restart 10 times in a row without seeing the error message, but if the computer sleeps for a while and then is restarted, the error message will likely be seen. Luckily my 435MT functions perfectly , and the messages are only a minor annoyance, but in other cases it has been reported to be associated with problems starting up the computer. Dell really should track down the cause of this common problem with the 435MT and, most likely, other Dell models.

yes i have tryed all the things listed above,and i well 2nt that they do not work!

i do believe that i have payed for a new pc,as i know a new pc should fully work without any problems.

i do believe dell should fix this,well they?most likey no.sad yes.

this is the last dell i well ever buy,it have been so much of a pain!

i had to take back the first two i got to get a replacement,the 1st had bad ram,the 2nt had a bad mobo.

the dell monitor i had to take it back coz of a bad pixel

plus i get a feedback sound i the speakers then i use the high performance power setting <all that for $1000.00

this rig has been a nightmare

the only thing that i need to change to get rid of the dell is my mobo now  <im allmost done :) >

My PC also functions perfectly even after an error message, EXCEPT that Photoshop frequently crashes after an error message.  Since Photoshop is the main reason that I upgraded my PC (i.e., I have more than enough PCs around the house to run email and web), this is especially frustrating.  I go into Photoshop frequently (pretty much daily), so letting my PC sleep is just not an option.  The real drag about the Photoshop crashes is that I'll have spent quite a bit of time on a photograph and want to adjust just one more thing and then CRASH.

That is very interesting indeed. Now that I think of it, I have had unexplained instances in which Photoshop will suddenly announce it has encountered a problem and quits. I just never connected these events (which are infrequent) with the Checkpoint error messages. This does make it seem more urgent to find an answer. I have to say, though, that I don't understand your comment about not being able to let your PC sleep, as it seems that sleep may be the thing that triggers the problem.

I didn't state that very clearly -- what I meant was that I have to set power handling options in Control Panel so that the PC never sleeps no matter how long it's idle, since if it sleeps I get the Photoshop problem.  That's not a very eco-friendly approach :-) 

I have, to my satisfaction, shown that for my 435MT:

-  if I get a checkpoint on boot, Photoshop will crash at some point

- if I don't get a checkpoint on boot, Photoshop will not crash

- if I let my PC sleep at any time, I will get a checkpoint the next time I boot

My accommodation for this is to never let the PC sleep, which kind of cuts me off at the knees when I tell my kids to turn off lights in rooms they are leaving.

OK, now I understand what you were saying about sleep. A compromise for you would be to turn off or sleep your monitor when not using your 435MT for longer periods - this would save some electricity, and perhaps fool younger children.

Chris M. from Dell advised that this issue has already been escalated to Dell's Product Group.  This group is actually responsible for the design of hardware components.  It is currently undergoing failure analysis.  At this time, there is no ETA on resolution.  Dell promised to keep this thread updated as new information comes.

What do we do in the meantime?  My system has been failing to boot up even without putting it in sleep mode.  If I shut the computer down in the evening it will get stuck in the middle of boot up the next morning.  I can live with it for now, but am wondering do I pursue support on the phone or would I just be wasting my time. 

Also,  I constantly get error messages when I am on the internet that say internet explorer has encountered a problem and must close.  Is this related to the boot up problem or do I just have another seperate issue on a brand new computer.   I know some people were complaining about photo shop crashing on this thread, so if anyone else is having the same issue please let me know.

I understand your frustration as I am one of the many others on this thread experiencing this same problem.  Not only did I contact Chris M. from these online Dell Community but (as I mentioned above) opened up another incident with Dell on this matter.  They even offered to replace my PC entirely but I declined as I don't think this will resolve the issue.  I'm concerned that this is a hardware defect common to all 435MT models.  In any case, the tech also advised me that this problem is with Dell Product's Group.  I suspect this issue has been prioritized but it wouldn't hurt to make more noise.  I would recommend you and any others experiencing this problem to call Dell (again) and POINT them to this thread.  Do not waste your time running through the same troubleshooting techniques.  Immediately let them know that all of Dell's troubleshooting steps do not work and to escalate this matter.  Also, urge them to post updates on this matter to this thread.  I'm optimistic that we'll arrive at a final resolution whether it means replacing our desktops with a different model or a firmware update.

I finally found someone at Dell that was supportive of my (our) problems.  I was offered a replacement machine and accepted it.  My only concern, like already posted is that the problems will still exist.  Funny thing.  Since last Friday, I have not received any D0, D1 type errors.  I changed the Vista power setting to Monitor 10 minutes and system 30 minutes and also have had no sleep errors.  I do think the machine is not really going into sleep mode and that is why i am no longer getting the errors.  But, I have made no other changes for the D0 error and it appears to be gone (for now). Strange machine.  Does anyone know if Dell sends out refurbished mahines for replacements or new ones ?  Sinced I paid for new, I would not want anything refurbished.  I think the sleep problem is related to Vista.  Has anyone installed Win7 and did the problem go away ?

I was going to ask about Windows 7 this morning also.  I'm on Vista.  I was also wondering if perhaps everyone with problems had the same video card (ATI Radeon HD4670 in my case).
