what do I buy?

I have a Dell Inspiron 531 with 4GB memory and have used Upgrade Advisor to see if my computer is capable of upgrade to Home Premium from Home Basic which is what I have now,I am not very computer savy and wanted to know if the Upgrade on Microsoft for $79.00 is the same as the Upgrade pack on the Dell website for $129.00? Is there something in the one from Dell that the on from Microsoft doesn't have or are they the same? The reason I want to know is,I don't know how to reset this computer with my original settings if they were changed(brothr-in-law) set this up for me! I want to keep my original settings,I don't know HOW to do a clean install or whatever its called! Will the one from Dell for $129.00 keep my same settings like is described on Microsoft website?I seems really easy to upgrade on the Microsoft website. What should I do? I'm really trying to wait to see if Dell has this software on sale in a few days or weeks! Thanks for any help!!

Re: what do I buy?

Vista Home Premium is a Microsoft operating system so it does not matter where you buy it.  It is sold at any retail store such as Best Buy, etc., and is the same.   As far as I know, the cost of the upgrade DVD is $129 no matter where you buy it from so I'm not sure where you are coming up with $79 unless you received some special coupon for a future upgrade.

When you use the upgrade software, all your settings remain which is what you want to do.  It is when you do a clean install and buy a full version of the operating system (not the upgrade) that you will lose all your settings unless you first save them to a CD or DVD.   For your purposes, you want to buy the Vista Home Premium Upgrade DVD.
