Inspiron 1501 to a 32" Philips TV Problem

I have a Inspiron 1501 with a ATI Radeon Xpress 1150 which has VGA out.  Through using a VGA to S-Video and RCA adapter,  I was able to hook it up via S-Video to a Philips 32" TV(not HDTV or LCD, just a regular tv) [that I want to use as a cloned monitor for viewing video with friends].  The main issue is that no matter what I try, I only get a blank screen on the tv when it is on the SVHS channel.  I get audio from the laptop on that channel, but no video.  I confirmed that the adaptor and the tv both work by hooking it up to my friends base tower, and that the VGA out of the laptop works by hooking it up to an old 15" monitor that I dragged out of storage.

I have tried every driver update I can and all the Fn+F8 that I can, but at best all I get are a few flickers from the tv.  When windows XP is loading, there is some lines of static on the tv, but then nothing.

Any suggestions? I have been at this for 4 days now and have finally hit my limit of my tinkering.

Thanks everyone!

Re: Inspiron 1501 to a 32" Philips TV Problem

A simple VGA to S-video and RCA adapter is not capable of giving a TV-compatible signal from your Inspiron 1501. For this you need a VGA to TV converter box. These converters range in price from around $35 to over $100. The image quality from some of them is poor so 'try before you buy' is the best policy.
