SP2008WFP and Skype

I can't use the webcam from my SP2008WFP in Skype: the webcam starts capturing (according to the blue light), but the videowindow in skyp stays black.

Skype is not willing to help, stating that i had to buy a skype-certified webcam.

Please help!

Re: SP2008WFP and Skype

so do these steps work with the webcam software installed ? cause the only way i got it to work was having the software uninstalled and the drivers uninstalled. and then sometimes it wil show up as a usb video device in skype and sometimes it doesnt and i have to use a program called manycam to pick up the video from the webcam and then on skype select manycam .

Yes it works with all the Dell software installed but the solution is a work around by turning the monitor OFF then ON I am still investigating the boot order as I think thats the route of the problem but hopefully Dell will come up with some new drivers but this work around does allow you to use the full features of what I think is still a very nice monitor with skype

Re: SP2008WFP and Skype

This has worked for me, I am using Skype 3.6, Windows Vista Home Premium, Inspiron 531, Video Card 256mb ATI Radeon HD 2600 Monitor speakers/mic would work ok, could send Adventar/pictures ok.Used a Logitech 4000 camera for video. From the tip by switching monitor off/on when PC booted up, brings up the Dell Webcam Centre which enables the video monitor to be picked for Skype Thanks John Any mod/driver update to overcome this problem ?

Re: SP2008WFP and Skype

Chris

I hope you are still with Dell, and can follow up on this - since I still have my monitor, and its extended 5 year warranty, and now have had the same issue with 2 different dell PCs with 2 different OS.  I don't use Skype, but have found the same problem with MSN and Yahoo from time to time.

Over time, I have found that the problem usually occurs when either the monitor is put in power saving mode by the OS, or the machine itself is put in sleep or hibernate state and brought back.  Turning the monitor on and off appears to help because it makes the OS re-detect the attached USB devices (i.e. the webcam in this case) - but it is not consistent (the little blue light beside the camera flashes even when it is in its 'dead' mode).

Most of the time, the webcam console application, MSN, yahoo, or any other application that accesses the webcam will display a black screen.  Often, I can bring the camera back to life by using the other video recording application that is bundled with the monitor (sorry, can't recall the name, as I am not at the computer right now)

Anyway, I still see that the driver and webcam application are both at thier initial release, and now that the new monitor driver page has a separation by OS, I see that this monitor and its webcam application are only listed under XP and Vista, but not under Windows 7 - what is the plan for windows 7?  Is support for the flaky webcam being dropped completely?  Can I claim a warranty replacement under my paid for 5 year warranty if the monitor is not supported on a newer OS which both my Dell computers will support?

Recent interactions with Dell are really starting to put a big dent in my 12 years of loyal patronage!

Re: SP2008WFP and Skype

Just sent an email off asking about the SP2008WFP and the SP2208WFP Windows 7 driver and webcab application.

Re: SP2008WFP and Skype

Just wanted to follow up and see if there are any updates on this?  Win 7 has built in support for the monitor and the web-cam, but does not provide the extra features and enhancements that are included in the Creative software that Dell distributes under the name "Webcam application" for this monitor.  I have installed the vista compatible version on Win7, and so far, it is partially funtional (freezes often, webcam does not show up in console unless an application like MSN is launched first etc)
