Fix: Inspiron 1501 Sigmatel 92XX popping, cracking sound issue in Vista

Configuration of Inspiron 1501:
AMD Turion X2 TL50
RAM 1GB
HDD 120GB
ATI x1150 256MB
Windows Vista Home Premium

Issue:
During the playback of audio files (wma, mp3, CD audio, ...) or video files in Media Player or in Winamp I can hear random poping, cracking sounds...

Solution:
I did various steps as disabling of enhancements of my speakers, disabling of WIFI, playing with HDD mode, reinstalling the sound, network, WIFI Vista drivers, play with Media Player setting, installed of 3rd party VAL tool but nothing happened, issue was still occurring and Dell technical support wasn't able to give me the proper solution.
Finally I found out solution on one forum which really worked great for me. Generally the issue is not in Sigmatel 92xx driver but due to Dell/ATI driver version. Update the Vista ATI Video Catalyst driver from http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/vista32/integrated-vista32.html and you will get rid of the popping sound. Does it make sense? No. Does it work? Yes.

Finally I can fully enjoy my sounds in Vista and I hope after applying the mentioned procedure you will enjoy the sounds too.

znalim,

Thank you for posting.  I had recently received information that this might be a possible fix.  I will be interested to hear if this works for other 1501 owners.  Unfortunately, most of our system do not have ATi video cards, so this is not a solution for them.

Thank you again for posting, and I hope this is the solution for Inspiron 1501 users.

I have had this problem since I bought my 1501, and installed the update to the ATI card today, and it seems to be working. No more cracking. I had tried the disabling wireless with SOME luck. It decreased the cracking by about 50% but this ATI update took care of the problem, even with WiFi enabled! Glad to have that fixed now! THANKS Rob

Re: Fix: Inspiron 1501 Sigmatel 92XX popping, cracking sound issue in Vista

THANK YOU. I had same problems, tried the new ATI Catalyst software in the link, and it worked. No more cracking/popping sounds. Also- video and audio are always in sync in quicktime and itunes videos. Before installing this new software, TV episodes in iTunes would make popping noises and then the audio would be out of sync with the video. Happened every 30 seconds probably, requiring someone to pause the video to put it back in sync. All fixed. I'm using an inspiron 1501, AMD Turion X2 TL50, 1GB Ram, 120 GB HD, Vista Home Premium. So glad it's fixed now. This computer was going to be pretty much useless to me. Thanks.

Thank you, thank you,

II had the same clicking problem plus random audio drop out. Downloaded the new Catalyst driver. I've been testing now for twenty minutes problem free.

Extremely grateful,

Steve

Re: Fix: Inspiron 1501 Sigmatel 92XX popping, cracking sound issue in Vista

Thank you!
I recently purchased 2 Inspiron 1501's (Vista, Athlon X2, 1GB, with ATI video) and both systems had this same cracking/popping audio problem.   Downloading this new video driver fixed the problem in both systems!
I see that Dell personnel monitor these boards.  Please incorporate this into new systems before they ship and save a lot of people the grief.

Re: Fix: Inspiron 1501 Sigmatel 92XX popping, cracking sound issue in Vista

abidahmad,
Just click on the link provided in the first post.  Download the catalyst driver (first one in the list you'll see)... it's about 38Mb size.    Once it's downloaded (can 'save' it to run later, or just choose 'Run' to execute right away) you will simply be installing over the existing driver(s).   Don't worry, the software is easy and you shouldn't find this process very difficult at all.
Just a note... a few times during the driver install, your screen will go completely blank for several seconds.  This is perfectly normal, as the new driver learns your video card hardware, screen resolution, etc., so don't alarmed when your screen blanks out.  :smileyvery-happy:

Re: Fix: Inspiron 1501 Sigmatel 92XX popping, cracking sound issue in Vista

abidahmad,
Yes.
I'm fairly certain that this issue has nothing to do with the precise type of processor you are running.  The cracking/popping audio problem appears to be caused by a conflict between the original audio driver and the original ATI video driver.  Updating the video driver definitely fixes this problem.
Bottom line... if you are reading this thread, I assume you have the same cracking/popping problem.  I also assume you have an Inspiron 1501 with ATI video?  Therefore, install the update.  It will fix your audio problem.

We all are very grateful to the original poster, "znalim" for researching this solution.  Thank you!!!

Re: Fix: Inspiron 1501 Sigmatel 92XX popping, cracking sound issue in Vista

Thank you very much znalim for the fix. It worked perfectly for me with my newly received Inspiron 1501 (AMD Athlon dual X2 tk53, sigmatel HD audio, ATI xpress integrated card, vista home basic).

What I really don't understand is why I lost 3 hours searching for that great fix when it was known from Dell for at least 3 weeks.

This problem is likely occuring on all Inspiron 1501 equipped with a sigmatel audio card and ATI video card. This is really a shame from Dell to not document/fix the problem when shipping the product. I hope this will change very soon.

I couldn't believe this problem from my new laptop when I knew my 1995's pentium II and my 2001 pocketPC could play perfectly mp3! My old 1981's commodore 64 was in the same audio league as my 2007's Inspiron before the fix.

You're right! Does it make sense: No  Does it work: YES!

Thanks so much for the fix. It's nice listening to digital music that doesn't sound like it's coming from a record on a turn table (I know...showing my age!). :smileyvery-happy:

Re: Fix: Inspiron 1501 Sigmatel 92XX popping, cracking sound issue in Vista

oh this fix has made me so happy! i just got my new AMD athalon64 duel core with the audigy soundcard in it and was so upset when i noticed all the popping noises. installed the update and it's PERFECT! :)

now...if only the creative forums were as helpful as the dell forum is...there have been /major issues with all the soundblaster cards lately that are running on windows xp. my desktop computer happens to be one of the victims of this windows update glitch, and the people from creative are only interested in playing nazi with anyone that even says one thing negative about them...they refuse to help dozens of users with the same exact problems.

thanks again :)

Re: Fix: Inspiron 1501 Sigmatel 92XX popping, cracking sound issue in Vista

I have a Turion 64X2,1Gb RAM, 80GB SATA 7200rpm, Vista Premium system, downloaded mentioned ATI driver but didn´t fix. Also tried power schemes and audio driver, no success. I found something interesting regarding this audio problem(at least this happen in my machine): I turn on the notebook, once Windows has fully loaded and the system is stabilized (I mean the HDD light almost stops blinking and the background applications and services are working),I try some mp3s and notice little (or nothing) popping and chopping (seems that the problem has almost gone), but I noticed this, when opening some application for example the Windows Explorer doing some search through the folders and opening some pictures (doing it fast, so the HDD has to work and respond), the audio gets worst, really worst. So, at least in my system the conclusion is this: Audio playing almost ok when HDD is no working (HDD light not blinking), when HDD is working (noticed by the blinking light) the problem appears. I continue testing. Bye!
