Re: upgrading dell e520 stock graphics card and power supply unit.

Hello NDNO, I got XFX Geforce 8600 GTS 512MB. They suggested to connect two molex to system power supply. But in your post you mentioned there is no need to molex. I just bought the card yesterday and plugged into the slot. It got power and fan is rotating well, but I am struggling to install the driver. My computer is Dell Dimension 520 with 19 inch monitor. It says, when I start to install driver, 'VGA detected seems not XFX's product. Please go to www.nvidia.com to get the driver for the other NVIDIA VGA,. Do you have any suggestion to install this card properly. Thanks in advance! Jay

Check the boards, SR45 has given the procedures for installing a video card on here many times. You'll need to properly clean out your old drivers before installing the newest drivers from Nvidia.com. NEVER use the drivers that come with a video card.

Re: upgrading dell e520 stock graphics card and power supply unit.

Hi, I bought new 500watts power supply because my power supply had no extra connecters for PCIe card. After connecting the power supply with new XFX geforce 8600 GTS card, system detected it and asked for driver. Then I installed driver from CD comes with the card. Now system is working good. I downloaded latest driver from the Nvidia website, I will install it soon. Now I am checking how to make my Dell E207WFP work with DVI cable. Now it is working with VGA cable through VGA adapter comes with the card. Hope I will get information to fix this last step. Thanks all for your help! Cheers! Jay

You don't have to do anything, just connect it through DVI instead of VGA.

You didn't need a new power supply though, just an adapter that probably shipped with the card to hook it to your existing PSU. Depending on what you bought, this new PSU may provide less power than your old one did.

Re: upgrading dell e520 stock graphics card and power supply unit.

Im reading this thread with great interest having just bought an XFX GeForce 8500GT Card 1GB Turbocache 512MB for my Dell E520 - O/S Vista Home Basic.

My card appears to be recognised, and having downloaded and installed drivers from the XFX webpage all seems well. BUT, I am a little mistified by the powering up of the card?? Do I need to make some power connections to my card from my PSU (which is a standard 305 unit)? The manual for the card are next to useless.

All help advice gratefully received

I upgraded my E521 with a 305W PSU from the 7300LE to an 8800GT - no problems at all, even though many people thought it wouldn't work.  If I were you, I'd go for the 9800GT - much better card than the 7950GT or 8600GT (I had the 8600GT first than upgraded again thru eVGA's step-up program) to the 8800GT.  They don't make the 8800 GTanymore but the 9800GT is almost exactly the same (it's a little better).  You'll be really glad you did.

Let me know if you need some guidance re: how to hook it up.

Good luck,

I am sure that Shadestalker probably has made a decision by now since he posted this 2 years ago back in June of 2007.  Don't  worry about it, I make this mistake myself all the time and don't catch the older posts since someone jumps in on these older ones instead of starting a new one.

I am surprised though that you got the 8800GT working on the 305 watt power supply.

Re: upgrading dell e520 stock graphics card and power supply unit.

Hi there everyone,

SR45 - It seems as though you are a mine of information on the subject of upgrading the E520 graphics card and I wondered if you would kindly let me know if there are any better/newer cards out now that I should consider?

Or anyone else who might be able to help... any suggestions welcome!

Your help would be greatly appreciated!

Big Smile

4850 would be a good choice:

Re: upgrading dell e520 stock graphics card and power supply unit.

Hey guys,

Could really use some help here, I started running Modern Warfare 2 and it seems to have fried my video card on my E520 (Green and purple fuzzy pixels and lines appear on the screen  now)

I have the Nvidia gforce 7300LE on this computer and wanted a quick and easy upgrade to replace the one that seems on it's way out now.

Any suggestions?  and is there an option to use a card that would simply require me to replace the one in there now? or do I have to do changes in BIOS and others areas that could be too complicated for a novice like myself?

Computer:

Dell Dimension E520

Intel Core 2 CPU

6400 @ 2.13 GHz

2GB of Ram

Hi Aquaerik,

I have the same stock E520 and I after much investigating I eventually went for a Radeon 4670 1GB. It is performing brilliantly and there is no need to upgrade your PSU either. For the price it is a great graphics card and it runs MW2 perfectly well!

Check it here: http://www.dabs.com/products/sapphire-technology-ati-radeon-4670-hd-750mhz-1gb-ddr3-pci-express-2-0-hdmi-657K.html

 Hope that helps!
