Im reading this thread with great interest having just bought an XFX GeForce 8500GT Card 1GB Turbocache 512MB for my Dell E520 - O/S Vista Home Basic.
My card appears to be recognised, and having downloaded and installed drivers from the XFX webpage all seems well. BUT, I am a little mistified by the powering up of the card?? Do I need to make some power connections to my card from my PSU (which is a standard 305 unit)? The manual for the card are next to useless.
All help advice gratefully received
shadestalker: im planning to upgrade my current graphics card which is the 7300 le to a better one.Im also planning to upgrade my PSU.Can anyone recommend a few PSU's and good graphic cards that are compatible with my rig?
I upgraded my E521 with a 305W PSU from the 7300LE to an 8800GT - no problems at all, even though many people thought it wouldn't work. If I were you, I'd go for the 9800GT - much better card than the 7950GT or 8600GT (I had the 8600GT first than upgraded again thru eVGA's step-up program) to the 8800GT. They don't make the 8800 GTanymore but the 9800GT is almost exactly the same (it's a little better). You'll be really glad you did.
Let me know if you need some guidance re: how to hook it up.
Good luck,
-Riff
I am sure that Shadestalker probably has made a decision by now since he posted this 2 years ago back in June of 2007. Don't worry about it, I make this mistake myself all the time and don't catch the older posts since someone jumps in on these older ones instead of starting a new one.
I am surprised though that you got the 8800GT working on the 305 watt power supply.
Hi there everyone,
SR45 - It seems as though you are a mine of information on the subject of upgrading the E520 graphics card and I wondered if you would kindly let me know if there are any better/newer cards out now that I should consider?
Or anyone else who might be able to help... any suggestions welcome!
Your help would be greatly appreciated!
4850 would be a good choice:

Sorry kpo127 - I totally forgot to point out that I did not wish to upgrade my PSU at the same time
Hey guys,
Could really use some help here, I started running Modern Warfare 2 and it seems to have fried my video card on my E520 (Green and purple fuzzy pixels and lines appear on the screen now)
I have the Nvidia gforce 7300LE on this computer and wanted a quick and easy upgrade to replace the one that seems on it's way out now.
Any suggestions? and is there an option to use a card that would simply require me to replace the one in there now? or do I have to do changes in BIOS and others areas that could be too complicated for a novice like myself?
Computer:
Dell Dimension E520
Intel Core 2 CPU
6400 @ 2.13 GHz
2GB of Ram
Hi Aquaerik,
I have the same stock E520 and I after much investigating I eventually went for a Radeon 4670 1GB. It is performing brilliantly and there is no need to upgrade your PSU either. For the price it is a great graphics card and it runs MW2 perfectly well!

Hope that helps!
