Dell does not have a "Recovery" CD.

They use an OEM XP reinstallation disk, that's same as the retail copy of XP, except that it is tied to their BIOS.

If you skipped section 1 of this email, please read it now. To run the Dell PC Restore, complete the following steps: * Turn the computer off and then back on. * Press [Ctrl] + [F11] when the blue Dell appears on the screen. This will bring up the Dell PC Restore by Symantec window if you have it. * Click [Restore] | [Confirm]. * Let the process complete and click [Finish]. For more information about PC Restore, visit the following web address but Symantec was wiped out when I installed XP Professional :( and i tried CTRL + F11 nothing happened

The BIOS are on the motherboard.

Call Dell and request all the XP disks required for a reinstallation,

Re: Dimension E510 Help!!!!

Depending on the age of your E510, it may have the Dell recovery partition and you can use that to do a complete restore of the PC to the original "power up" condition.  Use CTRL/F11 at boot up to access the restore partion, if yours has it and you did not delete the partition.

Re: Dimension E510 Help!!!!

hi it is my belief that dell has a bad way of giving service of any kind will never buy another never gave me any disk ither and when I questioned them on it they avoided me basicly saying its all about money and they want it all.which wouldn't be bad if they were upfront about it.Once you get the computer then they tell you nothing until you pay.I even payed once for help and they still did not fix the problem.I'm absolutly going to another bran next computer.too sum it up dell lies.

Re: Dimension E510 Help!!!!

I have and E510, I called for support when under warranty and they told me I needed a power supply so I paid $100 and got one.  Once I had it installed, my computer STILL did not work.  I called Dell and my warranty had conveniently expired and they were going to try to make me pay to talk to a tech to help me.  I was not willing to pay to talk to a tech when the one I talked to for free gave me wrong information.  Dell needs to fix their sorry customer service.  After a customer's warranty expires it does not mean that they should have to pay just to get help to fix the product that they spent hard earned money on.    I know this isnt the right forum to do my rant on but I was just agreeing with truckerpal2; Dell just wants your money, and they LIE.  I will NEVER buy a Dell again, nor will I recommend Dell to any of my family or friends.

Re: Dimension E510 Help!!!!

It is nice to know your computer is working.

The day of quality unlimited tech support has been gone a long time ago. Most of the computer vendors give you the type of tech you experienced. If you want  North American or software support included, you have to pay more.

Re: Dimension E510 Help!!!!

I have a problem with my E510. It won't turn on. I have changed the power supply, too, and it won't turn on. I think I paid close to $1200 for this system and service will not talk to me with out more, and it won't turn on. I have read that service will not admit to the E510 problem, I have read many threads about the same power up problem. No blue screen of death, it just shut off, and won't turn back on. I removed all peripherals, and it will not turn on. I removed the RAM (1 at a time) and it will not turn on. I have held the I/O power button for 30 seconds to three minutes to drain whatever power lurks on the mobo, and when I plug the power cord back in I get, A green light for about 5 seconds, the CPR fan starts spinning, The HDD spins up and I get an LED pattern of 2,3; 1,2,3; 2,3,4; 2,4 in that 5 seconds, then it shut off and will not turn back on. There is a green LED that is on, on the mobo and stays on for about 20 to 40 second after I remove the power cord. Once that light goes out I can repeat the plug in process.

I have also heard that it could be a problem with the tortured ribbon cable that goes to the front panel board or bad USB connectors. Either way, it won't turn on. I am now looking for a new motherboard and chip set that is compatible with the  Pentium D 820 "Smithfield" CPU, but I will have to get a new case, too, in case the front panel board is "tango union". I have owned SIX Dell computer, 3 desktops and 3 laptops, four are still running, one has Windows ME and the other is the E510. I think the ME will still turn on, but the E510 will probably be my last Dell.

I took it to my local computer repair shop (not geek squad) and there diagnosis was "You need a new motherboard". Standard answer used almost as much as your hard drive doesn't work.

So, if you didn't catch it, I posted that my computer will not come on. Can you help me?

Re: Dimension E510 Help!!!!

I have an E510, with no problems at all.

There have been several problems with E510's not powering on that have been traced to bent/shorted pins in USB jacks.  Check all the USB ports very carefully for any bent/shorted pins.

Many E510 power supplies have failed (most of the failures) but there have been a few front panel assemblies and a few motherboards.  However, as there can be many reasons why a PC - any PC from any PC vendor - can fail, each one has to be approached on it's own.  I managed (and worked at) a hardware help desk for many years (23 years and before PC's) and have probably "seen it all".  Oblivious to the user power problems, for example, can happen but it can take a long time after the power problem before a problem shows up on the PC.  Same way with heat or static electricity.  So, it's not all "poor hardware components or engineering" that causes PC's - or any electronics to fail.    Everyone assumes with all the hype about MAC's that they don't fail or that they always get excellent support and service from Apple, but there are many stories of the opposite around.

If I were to "salvage" parts from the E510 for a new PC, there isn't much to salvage.  I wouldn't reuse the "old technology" D820 CPU (they are obsolete).  There is no good reason to spend $$ on new components only to use "old technology" for the CPU.  About the only things really 'salvageable" are the SATA hard drive and maybe the CD/DVD drives (although they are PATA  and new systems use SATA drives).
