Defective 2300MP projectors, bad batch?

Our company bought 2 new Dell 2300MP projectors in early January, and within 3 days they both stopped working. In both cases, everything was working fine, we turned off the lamp, left the projector sitting there, came back hours later, tried to power on, and the lamp never came on. The fan didn't power on either. After about a minute the orange Lamp light came on. We tried unplugging and everything else we could think of, including verifying that the lamp was still working (we stuck the lamp in another identical projector, and it worked fine).

Dell exchanged both of the projectors for us, and they were both working fine for a couple of days, but today one of the projectors had the same problem. Dell is exchanging this 3rd projector for us.

From what I can tell, nobody is treating the projectors harshly or unplugging them before they cool down or anything like that. We have an older Dell projector and we have never had any problems with it.

When the 2300MP projectors are working I really like them. I just don't know how reliable they are. I was beginning to think that there was a bad batch, but I searched and didn't see any other complaints about this on this forum, so now I'm not sure what to think. Our team of software developers and testers can't believe how many problems we are having.

Re: Defective 2300MP projectors, bad batch?

Put me down on this list of bad 2300MP projectors.

A few months after I ordered my "new" projector, the unit would not "boot up".  I then went into the unit and found a shredded up light bulb housing unit.

Dell did ship me a replacement, I have since shipped back the replacement unit and have the classic "unit won't turn on" problem.

I am comforted to see this forum and others with the same problem to let me know I am not crazy.

I am in front of people all day long with this projector, dell would be smart to help those out stuck with the 2300MP units.  We could then say more positive things about Dell and their products.

Re: Defective 2300MP projectors, bad batch?

I'm one of the unfortunate ones who now seem to own an $1100 paper weight. Since we only use ours lightly (about 120 hours in the last year) and it has now gone beyond the warranty, I'm the loser, it would seem. Had the original one, which malfunctioned as described by most here and got it replaced after about 6 months with the first one. They sent me a refurb which I'm not pleased about either, and now it has quit working in the same fashion, only after the warranty period.

Dell has been less than forthcoming about the obvious problems with this projector. They will not tell me what the original problem was with my refurb, and as the owner I feel I have the right to know (though I'm sure I can guess on this...) and don't seem to want to make good on a problem that is well documented to them and is their issue. So, sadly, my next projector will likely be from someone else. the sad part is, Dell doesn't seem to care. Perhaps it is because we are a small outfit and don't have need for a great deal of business with them, which makes it all the sadder that the little guy is ignored.

We also bought a Dell 2200MP that has gone dead. We have had it about a year and a half, only used a couple of times a month ( maybe 150 hours on the bulb). One day the bulb blew up when we turned it on? We bought a new bulb , but it still wouldn't power up. We were told the board is bad. I believe there is a defect with this model, but Dell doesn't want to own up to it.

Re: Defective 2300MP projectors, bad batch?

My MP2300 went dead with the red LAMP light shining...also with the new replacement lamp. I am just out of warranty. I got 40 hours of projection out of the machine... now I sit here with two functing bulbs and a brooken machine.

Dell refers to warranty of 12 months. I intend to fight this one for long, I expect Dell to back their products in a situation where a design problem is obvious.

Too be continued.....I wonder how long this discussion will remain on the Dell forum.

Good luck - I have been fighting w/ dell on this for over a month now, and I now have verifiable proof that there customer service department doesn't know left from right, and their *ahem* from their elbow. I have gotten so many different answers my head is spinning still. I am currently waiting for a *reply* from their policy exception team - now by email 10-15 business days rather than the 1-2 by phone I was initially promised several times.

The projector is fatally flawed. Apparently, voluntary recalls are only warranted when it may explode and set your laptop on fire...

Re: Defective 2300MP projectors, bad batch?

I bought a 2300MP in 01/2005 for teaching and presentation (relatively light use), and it died in early 2007 (way before the claimed lifetime of the lamp).  The replacement lamp did not work, but at the time, my university's tech support happened to have a spare, with which the projector worked.

So the replacement was returned for yet another replacement, which still didn't work.  My immediate reaction was that something else must be wrong, since it's a small chance that both replacement lamps are defective.  But after reading this forum, I am no longer sure.  I am also discouraged to contact Dell's tech support, and regret now that I bought this projector in the first place.

There is no longer a spare around for me to test, and I am unwilling to buy another lamp.  I know that it is going to be a big hassle to return/exchange for a new lamp, but I'll ask my university to help.  I am also thinking of buying a new projector elsewhere.

Advice?  Thanks,

Re: Defective 2300MP projectors, bad batch?

Our school generally has to buy from the state approved list of contractors, so we have quite a few Dell 2300mp/2400mp projectors.  I have replaced lamps (at an AMAZING COST! ) only to have the lamps dim and turn off again. I am now up to 3 projectors sitiing in my lab with the same issue.  I certainly don't want to keep buying new lamps only to have them not work either.  We are certainly not getting the lamp life that is advertised with these projectors.

Is Dell addressing this at all?   Is there a board or something that can be replaced to fix the problem.

Thanks,

Casey
