Graphics card upgrade - Dell Dimension 4400. Need help please.

  • Hi,

    I recently bought Grand Theft Auto San Andreas for my PC, but it wouldn't install it due to the fact of the graphics card (I think that's all anyway, I'm sure the other hardware meets the requirements).

    The minimum requirement for this game for the video card is 64mb with DirectX9 compatible drivers (GeForce 3 or better). The recommended requirement is 128 (+) MB video card with DirectX9 compatible drivers (NVIDIA GeForce 6 series recommended)

    I am completely lost regarding video cards. I have been looking on Amazon.co.uk for GeForce video cards, but it has them for AGP and PCI, don't know which one to get.

    I currently have a Dell Dimension 4400, 16MB ATI Rage 128 Ultra (RAGE128 PRO II, (AGP 4X/PCI) ).

    Could someone give me some advice regarding this please? Recommend which card to get? :smileysad:
  • Your problem is your video card. Yours is WAAAAAAAAAY below a Geforce 3.

    You have an AGP 4x slot, which means you can use basically any AGP card (8x cards work fine in 4x systems, and there's no performance difference).

    Because of the age of the system, it might not be worth spending much, especially if you've got a slow CPU, little RAM, etc. But something like a Geforce 6600GT might be a reasonable upgrade, and would be more than 30 times more powerful than your current video card.

    This is a good model that's $119 after rebate.
  • Thanks for responding to my post. I am going to have a look at that site the now. Though I'm in the UK.

    I have an Intel Pentium 4 CPU 1.70 GHz, memory is 256 Mb Ram (actually can't remember if it is DDR RAM or not).

    Any recommendations from this site? http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/tg/browse/-/561904/ref=br_bc_h_3_4/203-0771471-3028730

    I'm not looking on spending too much on upgrading the video card, basically just after the minimum requirements to play this game.

    Thanks :smileyhappy:

  • Here I am again :smileysurprised:

    I've been looking through that Amazon.co.uk site, there are quite a few video cards to choose from, bearing in mind I am not going to spend too much on it.

    Do you think this video card would run GTA San Andreas?

    Thanks in advance.
  • Is there much a difference between: PNY GeForce 6200 AGP8X 128MB VGA+TVOUT  and   Club 3D Geforce 6600 256Mb Ddr Agp Dvi Tvo Retail  ?

  • A Geforce 6600 is much more powerful than a 6200, though typically over here it goes for about the same price as the even more powerful 6600GT, which is what we usually recommend.

    Remember that 256MB on these low end video cards dosen't help at all. You're much better off buying a higher end card with 128MB than a lower end one with 256.

    EDIT: Posted this before I saw SR45's reply.

  • 6600 = Good card 128 bit memory GPU Z compression 8 Pipelines
    6200 = Junk card 64 bit memory GPU NO Compression 2 pipelines 500 to 800 percent slower than a 6600.

    Prices should also clue you in as to what is "better"

    6200 = cheap junk
    6600 = $150 to $200
    6800 = $290 to $350
    7800 = $330 to $500

    I do not work for Dell. I too am a user.
    The forum is primarily user to user, with Dell employees moderating.

  • Prices are cheaper than those now though...
  • Hmmmm, this is so difficult...don't know what to buy. Though I'm watching my budget, and after the minimum requirements to play it.

    Does anyone currently run or have run any of the above graphic cards? If so, what is your opinions on them?

    Has anyone played GTA San Andreas on any of the above graphic cards? If so, what are your thoughts?

    Would the above cards be easy to install on my system (Dell Dimension 4400) ?

    Sorry for ranting on about these cards, just have to make sure I'm purchasing the correct card - very eager to play this game (I will eventually get to play Grand Theft Auto San Andreas) lol!!!! :smileyvery-happy:

  • I have the 6600 GT card from Leadtek and it has all the cable and some games included.  It works very well with my Dim 4400 system and my stock 250 watt power supply.  If you want better gaming, than the 6600 GT card, not the plain 6600 will work very well.  It costs around $ 139.00 on up.

    Dim 4400
    2.6 Ghz 400 FSB
    1 Gb 2100 DDR Memory
    20 Gb hard drive 7,200
    Windows XP Home - SP-2
    Leadtek 6600 GT
