IT Efficiency Metrics

IT Efficiency Metrics
The clear answer to today’s IT challenges is to increase IT efficiency throughout the infrastructure, from the desktop to the data center. This Wiki is intended to provide a forum where efficiency metrics, goals and guidelines can be shared.

Storage: Data Network Cost as a Percent of Total IT Budget

Storage and data management

GOAL: Less than 8.98% of Total IT Budget

RATIONALE:  The overall cost of storage is expensive and growing. So storing
as much as possible on the fewest number of devices is critical. One way to measure efficiency is the cost per stored gigabyte.  Lower costs are a byproduct of automated tiering, backup and archiving processes, but also a measure of the overall utilization of the entire system. According to Gartner,  the cost of the data network as a percent of total IT spend should be less that 8.89%.  A higher number shows inefficiency, either in hardware, software or management.

POTENTIAL RESULTS:  An efficient data network will not only cost less, but will be easier to manage and perform faster.

SIDE NOTES:

  • One way to measure efficiency is the cost per stored gigabyte. Dell believes that total storage costs should be $5 per gigabyte or less.
