Education Data Management: How does data go from being unusable to high-quality?

“Knowledge is power.”  It’s a phrase attributed to Sir Francis Bacon that many students will come to know during their schooling, whether through a teacher or a motivational poster on the classroom wall.  It also describes what happens when school districts turn the vast amount data at their disposal into knowledge that has the power to impact student outcomes.

In order to be effective, data must first be “high quality.”  A variety of factors commonly prevent data from being useful.  For example, data that is stored in silos, is accessed via multiple points of entry, is inaccurate, inconsistent or incomplete, is duplicated, or is paper-based can’t be used to its full potential.

By contrast, quality data is complete, consistent, available, accurate, relevant, timely and valid.  It can be used to achieve high quality educational decision making, operational efficiency, sound fiscal management, efficient and trustworthy reporting (for compliance and other purposes), and transparency.

So how does data go from being unusable to high-quality?  The answer lies in a well-planned, goal-oriented Education Data Management (EDM) strategy.  Dell works with school districts to develop and execute an EDM strategy that meets their individual needs.  We begin by involving all departments, working with the district to set data needs and goals, and developing an initial project plan. From there, we incorporate Master Data Management and process management best practices. Finally, we utilize education intelligence tools that generate easy to access reports and powerful data analysis, while also providing root cause detection capabilities, predictive data, and easy-to-use dashboards and scorecards for teachers.  In order to maximize effectiveness, Dell also provides professional development to help educate end users about how to navigate the system and take advantage of the data at their fingertips.

By utilizing EDM, districts not only have rapid, easy to understand access to critical information, they have the tools they need to use this information to make strategic learning decisions.
