Since Marco Ament complained about it, I’ve noticed others chiming in on the topic of Apple’s minor update to the Mac Pro line of desktops. Posts from Ars Technica, CNET, and MacRumors are all saying similar things.
For those of you out there who don’t want to wait and aren’t opposed to looking at alternatives, this is a reminder that Dell is now shipping our newly-redesigned Precision Workstation tower systems. In my view, these are the best workstations we’ve ever built. Beyond packing the latest Xeon processor technology and a slew of high-end graphics card options, these systems look great and offer tons of expandability. And if you’re a pro user who needs a machine of this level, you’ll no doubt appreciate the easy access to the power supplies and the hard drive bays.
If you’re looking for an Ivy Bridge-based all-in-one, Dell recently introduced a few all-in-ones worthy of consideration in my view. Top of the list there is the PC Magazine Editors’ Choice-winning XPS One 27. See my blog post for more. This thing packs a serious 2560x1440 display with Ivy Bridge processors, six USB 3.0 ports and more into a gorgeous package.
Otherwise, if a more standard desktop PC is what you’re looking for, the XPS 8500 desktop brings a heck of a lot to the table. And while it’s easy to see that Apple has created some real buzz with the revamped MacBook Pro lineup, we’ll have some compelling alternatives coming soon.
