Okay, a quick look at Techmeme shows there's no shortage of "RSS  is dead" kind of debates to go around, but many mainstream users on the web have no idea how to use it. We're offering an alternative built around specific topics to our customers in Facebook through a new application called the Dell Buzz Room.

The Dell Buzz Room Facebook app brings the top news, tweets, videos and photos from around the web. The tool uses cool technology from a company called OneSpot. We'll feature a mix of Dell and industry news in several categories. These categories include Environment, Education, Healthcare, Entrepreneurship, Cloud Computing, Social Media, Product News and Mobility. Similar to the new Power to Do More site, we wanted a way to incorporate the most popular industry and social content for our customers in Facebook, where they are already spending time online.

So how does it work?

Enter the Buzz Room through our Home tab on both our main Dell Facebook page and Dell for Business Facebook page. Once you’ve arrived, click on the color-coded boxes on the top panel of the application to choose your category and your content below will automatically update. Sources include Twitter, top blogs, top online news sites, Dell content sites as well as related photos and video from sites like Flickr and YouTube

  • I love this idea and have added it to my "favorites" but I have two questions --

First, many of these stories are 3-4 days old. Yipes. That's no good.

Second, how would I get my blog submitted as potential content for the social media segment? I write on many current issues, ethical considerations and new ideas. The URL is www.businessesGROW.com

I am a university professor and am usnig your blogs as a best practice case study in my classes. Keep up the good work!

  • Hi Mark -

Thanks for the feedback and for using our blogs as an example in your courses - how cool! As far as the frequency of stories, we're still testing what works best (top of the week, top of the day, etc.) and wanted to make sure that people who aren't able to visit the side everyday are still able to see the most popular posts up front.

We'll add you blog to the social media category as well. You should see content in the next day or two in the "Best of the Blogs" widget.

    Thanks!

    Sarah
