What You Need to Know About the Windows 7 Upgrade Process

It’s been a busy time since Windows 7 launched last week. Many customers who bought systems after June 26 have registered for upgrade kits to move from Vista to the of Windows 7. So many, in fact, that we've had to address performance issues on the Windows 7 upgrade site. We've also recently corrected an issue that was causing incorrect ship date information in some cases.

Update: I heard from customers like Direct2Dell reader johnkett, shf doc and a couple of others that they could not get beyond documenting their current version of Vista during the registration process using the Chrome browser. Switching to Internet Explorer works. Firefox works as well.

Each upgrade kit will consist of two things: the Windows 7 operating system disc and an Upgrade Assistant DVD, which contains Windows 7 drivers and more. In this post, I want to take a few minutes to explain the process of getting your Windows 7 upgrade kit for eligible systems. First, I’ll outline the core steps of the process, then will explain each one further from there.

  1. Determine system eligibility
  2. Register your eligible system for the upgrade at https://win7.dell.com.
  3. Place your order for the version that you are eligible for
  4. Once you successfully place your order, you can check the order status from the Windows 7 upgrade site at https://win7.dell.com

Checking system eligibility:  You can buy a qualifying machine from June 26 - December 31, 2009. Check the system eligibility link (see image below):

Registering your system:

To register your system, start at https://win7.dell.com. You'll be prompted to enter some information like your name, e-mail address, the date of your purchase, the system type and service tag. In the Tell Us About the OS Purchased section (see below), be sure you choose the right OS version and details like 32 pr 64-bit.  One common issue here is that customers are not choosing an OS language at this point in the registration process. If you do not specify an OS language, Arabic is the default language.

Some customers are running into an issue where either their system is not being recognized or that their system is not eligible for the upgrade even though they meet the eligibility requirements. If this is happening to you, feel free to let me know in the comments of this post or contact me (see the details in the last paragraph below).

Once you get through these details in registration, you'll be asked to create an account user name and password. You should see a screen like this one when you finish the registration process:

Soon after, you will receive an e-mail that confirms that you've registered. Form  there, you will need to place your order.

Placing your order:

First step is to log back into the Windows 7 upgrade site. From there, you will see all the systems you registered in the top row. Assuming your OS language is available (see schedule here), you will be able to place a check in that box, the click the Add Kits to Cart button. Once it is moved down from the Registered section into your Upgrade Cart section, click the Complete Your Order button:

From there, you will be asked to complete details like your shipping address and credit card details (if shipping & handling fees apply). You will then be asked to confirm the order, review the terms and conditions, and complete your order. Soon after you complete your order, you will receive an e-mail that confirms your order details.

Checking Order Status:

At this point, once you log into the upgrade site, you will see an Order Status link. The time it takes to ship the upgrade kit will vary based on lots of factors like volume and where we're shipping to. In some cases, it may take up to 2 - 4 weeks.

If you encounter issues in any of the steps above, you can comment on this post or contact me directly through sending me a private message or you can e-mail me here. If you go that route, please share your service tag or order number, and let me know some details about your specific situation and I will try to help.

Many of the resources are found at the Dell Windows 7 Upgrade Site. That’s where you’ll find things like the FAQ, the System Eligibility List, the Release Schedule. Here’s the main Windows 7 Forum Page. Another main technical support resource is Dell’s Windows 7 Support Center (click on the image below to check it out).

  • heck it won't even let me log into it. i'send e-mails everyday till i get it. this is stupid, should just order it send bill to dell.

  • I received the Windows 7 upgrade DVD a couple of days after I ordered it.  Is there an option to get the full OEM-licensed version of Windows 7 so that I can format my hard drive and do a fresh install?  If not, how can I do a fresh install from the upgrade DVD, and what is the registry tweak that I need to do post-installation?

  • Why is it whenever I go to the drivers page for my system (m1530) the page has issues!

  • I ordered my Upgrade for Windows 7 on the 26th Oct,2009. But I do not know how to trace my Order Status Online. Kindly help me .

    Thanks,

  • This is what I didn't know.  I did upgrade my Vista to 7 but I didn't upgrade through Dell.  I have just been told this has voided my warranty with a year and a half to go on it.

Seems to me that this should not affect hardware issues, which is what I was calling about.  Also seems to me that updated firmware needs to be provided for Windows 7

  • Help! I have been attempting to find out about when I will be notified of the free Windows 7 that I registered for. I have tried to contact  Dell and received automated replies that tell me to register which I have already done. Even the password account will not let me check on the status of  my windows 7 upgrade. I have spent much time and effort on trying to get this information. Thanks, Greg

  • I have registered my inspiron for the free upgrad... but did not get to the page that got me to set up an account as shown above. Now when I try to reregister, it tells me that this laptop is already registered, but i dont have an email telling me how to oreder like it says i should!... What should I do next?

  • I purchased my Inspiron 530 from Best Buy on 8/24/09. After several calls to tech support and more to customer care, I finally succeeded in getting the sell date changed to reflect the actual purchase date (not when Best Buy bought it). Whew... I was finally eligible for the free Windows 7 upgrade. I registered, ordered and received my upgrade kit, downloaded and printed out every conceivable bulletin from Dell on how to upgrade.  WOOHOO!!! Finally get to upgrade. Or so I thought...

After installing every update I could get my hands on, upgrading my Trend Micro from 2009 to 2010, and creating a back-up disk, I thought I was well on my way.  Hmmm...  Insert "Upgrade Assistant" disk and OMG... not eligible??? Inspiron 530 bought in August NOT ELIGIBLE???

Okay...I'll call tech support. After being told 6 different things from "Our sytem is slow" (and getting disconnected) to "Call back tomorrow" (and getting disconnected), I decided to go to live chat. After that tech took control of my PC, he couldn't understand it either. Stated that "few of the Inspiron desktop systems arfe still in a state of pending in the database for windows 7 upgrade" (not a typo on my part). What does that mean? All I know is that I'm VERY disappointed with this computer and I'm an inch away from returning it to Best Buy. I know there are glitches whenever a new OS comes out, but I can't even get it installed to have them.

Sorry to have vented so much here, but I have spent the last 3 hours searching Dell's site for a resolution and  have found none. Oh well... tomorrow's another day and maybe the tech I will talk to then might know something.

  • Seems many issues with even trying to get registered for an upgrade to 7 that I payed for.  No answers here!  What's up DELL?  No customer service response to emails....  So Lionel_Menchaca what is the problem here?

  • I would like to added to the list of frustrated upgrade customers. I purchased a 11z on 09/29/09. It took coutless e-mails and phone calls to get it registered for windows 7 upgrade. After registering I did not receive promised e-mail. If I attempt to go back and look at the upgrade site, I am told that my password is not good. If I ask for a new pasword I am asked for my user Name, which I never received. I have gone several channels of support on this and everyone refers to me to another or I can not understand the english on the phone. My customer no is

    . Thank you for listening.

  • I think I'm in the same boat, I purchased my 530 from Tesco on 6th Oct, when I went to register it , Dell are saying the warranty has expired??? When I go to register for the upgrade Dell tell me my system is not on their Database. What is happening??

  • Finally got hold of a tech who knew what to due. I let him take control remotely and after about 30 minutes of popping back and forth in my computer, he finally told me to put in the update disk.  He clicked on a few buttons and BANG... got it upgrading. Most of my programs were transferred with no problem and the ones that had problems I just had to update from their propsective companies.

And Jez, you just gotta keep bugging them til you get a tech that knows the difference between a hole in the ground and...uhhh... you know the rest. GOOD LUCK!!!

  • I am a Dell customer. I bought my Vostro 1400 a year and a half ago. Back then they were pushing Windows Vista. Since I was a Vista tester I declined to have that operating system on my Vostro. Now that Microsoft came out with a more stable Windows 7 I have been thinking of upgrading my Vostro 1400 to this operating system.

What bothers me to no end is that since I did not extend my warranty with Dell (and this is not my first Dell) they will not help me with the upgrade requirements needed to upgrade my Vostro from XP to Windows 7. I ran the upgrade advisor and this is the only issue I have that needs resolving.

Your current graphics adapter won't support the

Windows Aero user interface. If you want to

experience the benefits of Windows Aero,

contact your PC manufacturer or retailer to see

    if an upgrade is available.

Why won't Dell help me. I can't buy upgrades without the support of the company that sold me this laptop.

Does Dell want me to buy my next computer from a different manufacturer?

  • Hi I have a DELL STUDIO XPS 1340, purchased on 14.8.09 from US. On attempt to upgrade vista to windows 7 (i am eligible), after giving the existing OS details, it just not goes further. I am not able to register despite multiple attempts. I tried to contact on e-mail, got a reply with a link to the same site. I tried to call Dell, did not get a proper response. I called Microsoft, on lady said call Dell again. What should i do now?? Any way out, Mr. Lionel Menchaca?

  • Sachit1: if you've completed the order process, you should be able to log in using the User Name and Password you set up. From there, you should see a "Order Status" link. Do you see it on the right after you log in?
