Dell Response to Wall Street Journal Article

Some of you may have seen yesterday's story that appeared in the Wall Street Journal (subscription required). Our view is that it only tells part of the Dell story. What’s missing is the progress we’re making against four key areas for consumer and small-business customers: post-sales customer experience, sales customer experience, pricing simplification, and improving how we reach customers through marketing. The online community is important to us. More than half of our consumer customers buy...

    Improving Battery Standards

In an earlier post , Lionel mentioned an organization called IPC, and asked me to share some details about the group, my role in it, and to discuss the upcoming tech summit , which happens next month in San Jose. I talked about this recently with eWEEK , but wanted to share more perspective. The IPC is a trade organization that has evolved since its inception in 1957. They started out as the “Institute for Printed Circuits”, became the Institute for Interconnecting and Packaging Electronic...

XPS 700 International Customers; Custom Cable Inquiries

Some customers from Canada have pointed out that they were not given the option to upgrade their processor from a Pentium-D or choose a gift option like I had reported in an earlier post . My apologies to those people. Would recommend that you contact your sales representative directly to address these concerns. Otherwise, you can submit a comment to this blog entry with an email, phone number, order number that I won’t publish. I’ll get your information to teams that can help. For EMEA or Latin...

    Green Recycling Options

As Dell’s head of Dell Sustainability, I’m focused on ways you can integrate environmental responsibility into the way you buy, use and dispose of your computer equipment. We offer customers two broad options: Donate it. When you are finished using your computer consider donating it to a non-profit organization. While you may have outgrown its features, an organization that cannot afford technology may be able to use it for years to come. Dell connects customers to donation opportunities through...

    Virtualization Beyond the Enterprise

Food for thought from David Berlind at ZDNet … This goes back to what I talked about at LinuxWorld in April where I articulated a vision along these lines. Up to now, enterprise needs have driven virtualization. I believe this will change with the move to client virtualization—unbinding the OS from the platform opens up cool new opportunities on the desktop. In a virtualized environment, multiple virtual machines run different environments on the same platform. One could be running a secure...

Rampant Speculation on the XPS 700

Several of you have been asking specifically about the NVIDIA 590 chipset and the XPS 700. Other recent forums entries like Tom’s Hardware and CNET contain some misinformation that needs to be cleared up. What’s driving some of this speculation? For starters, our chipset had been identified incorrectly by two different utilities available to the public, nTune and CPU-Z . These screenshots from a Dell Community Forum user show what I'm talking about. Bottom line, we’ve fixed the error with NVIDIA...

    Apple’s Notebook Battery Recall

Many of you have probably already seen that Apple announced a battery recall for some of its notebook batteries. I wanted to take a moment to commend Apple for taking this action to protect customers. Our recall is proceeding well, based on the positive feedback we’re receiving from our customers worldwide. In the midst of all the media attention on this topic, sometimes it’s easy to lose sight of the facts. Our recall represents just over 15% of the 24.9 million batteries we shipped over a more...

    PC Magazine Reader Satisfaction Survey

This morning, PC Magazine posted the results of their annual Reader Satisfaction survey . Last week's ACSI results showed that we are making improvements; PC Magazine's results show that while our customers still have high brand loyalty towards Dell, our tech support and repair satisfaction ratings have plenty of room for improvement. Our numbers in those categories from last year to this year were basically unchanged. We are disappointed in that, and very disappointed that we did not receive a Readers...

Correction: Letter O vs. Number 0 for Battery Recall

Need to correct earlier statements I made on this blog regarding entering your battery serial number (PPID) on the battery recall site . My sincere apologies for the misinformation. Here’s what I can say: The first 15 characters your PPID only contains zeros. The last 5 characters may contain the number 0 (zero) or the letter O. Since the last 5 characters can contain both a 0 (zero) and/or a letter O, please be careful when you are entering your battery serial number. Some Direct2Dell...

A Few Days into the Battery Recall

Wanted to take some time to answer a couple of specific customer questions, and to comment a bit on external reaction to the battery recall. Will work to address more of the blog comments directly moving forward. Some customers have asked whether they can return or exchange newer systems. The answer is no… the recall applies to certain batteries up to July 18. All of our systems in the U.S. come with a 21-day return policy . Some customers who received systems up to July 18 are outside the...

Format: wmv Duration: 10:11 Virtualization —it’s been around for years, so why is it suddenly so hot? Big changes are underway that will make it mainstream in servers and even client systems. What has changed? First, the industry has started a transition from single- to multi-core processors… and on the horizon are similar trends in I/O. These trends will continue. So what do we do with all these extra processing units? Virtualization is a natural fit for all of these processing elements. One...

Spent a few more minutes with J.B. this afternoon in the midst of a very busy day for her and the team. She wanted to share more information on the progress we’ve made, and I am passing it on. Are You Sure My Battery is not Affected?

Some customers are wondering why some batteries Dell distributed during this time period are part of the recall and why other batteries are not. Dell uses multiple suppliers and multiple battery pack form factors so not every battery is affected. This recall is specific to battery packs produced with Sony cells. If you have a battery that is not included in the recall, you can feel confident it is ok. The quickest way to find out if your battery is part of the recall is to check the battery recall...

It’s me again. I just talked to J.B. Johnson, Dell’s program manager for the battery recall, and I wanted to provide an update on how we're taking care of our affected customers. When the announcement went out last night, the phones started ringing. J.B. and her team were handling 500 calls every 30 minutes until midnight (CT). The volumes decreased overnight, but calls are ramping as I write this post. We expect the highest call volume for the recall to be between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. (all time...

I know everyone’s attention is rightfully focused on the battery recall, but wanted to get this post out there in conjunction with the release of the latest results from the University of Michigan ACSI study . Recent stories by Bloomberg and BusinessWeek discuss the results in more detail. Yesterday, I blogged about Dell’s internal survey process. While we all use differing methodologies, it is good to see some forward movement: according to the ACSI results, our overall score improved 5.4% from...

New Information on the Battery Recall

I just talked to Dell SVP Alex Gruzen who posted on Direct2Dell earlier and is head of our Mobile Products Group. He is hunkered down with his team working through all the issues around the battery recall (which we initiated based on six confirmed instances in the U.S. in which notebooks overheated or caught fire). His team offered some new information: About 14 percent of the batteries provided to Dell customers between April 2004 and July 21, 2006, are affected. Dell is recalling approximately...

Dell announced a recall today of lithium-ion batteries sold in many of our notebook computers over the past two years. You may have seen the recent New York Times story or have seen other details in the blogosphere . As the leader of the mobile business for Dell, I wanted to share my thoughts on this recall. Lithium-ion is a proven technology which has been widely used in our industry for over ten years. These batteries are not just for notebook computers – they are found in many electronic...

We’ve identified the problem, are implementing a fix, and plan to resume shipping very soon. Once we resume shipping, we plan to work through our backlog of orders as quickly as possible. For new customers, we’re quoting a mid-October ship date . For...
