XPS 8930 upgrade WiFi 6 card and 2.5G Base-T PCIe LAN card

XPS 8930

XPS 8930

Hi all

I'm using DELL XPS 8930 and I have currently upgraded to 2500MB broadband with ASUS ROG Rapture GT-AXE16000 router.

I would like to upgrade to a 2.5GBase-T PCIe network adapter. I'm thinking about ASUS 2.5GBase-T PCIe Network Adapter PCE-C2500 (https://www.asus.com/networking-iot-servers/wired-networking/all-series/pce-c2500/).

Also, I'd like to upgrade the WiFi adapter to support WiFi 6 as an alternative. I'm think about Intel Wi-Fi 6E AX211 Gig+ WiFi Card AX210NGW (https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/sku/204837/intel-wifi-6e-ax211-gig/specifications.html)

Can someone please tell me are those compatible with my XPS 8930?

Thanks in advance.

Both the ASUS 2.5GBase-T PCIe Network Adapter PCE-C2500 and the Intel Wi-Fi 6E AX211 Gig+ WiFi Card AX210NGW are compatible with your Dell XPS 8930 system.

For the network adapter, the ASUS PCE-C2500 supports 2.5GBase-T technology, which delivers speeds of up to 2.5Gbps, making it suitable for handling data-intensive tasks on your desktop computer. Additionally, it requires minimum Category 5e network cables within a 30m range for 2.5Gbps operation.

As for the WiFi adapter, the Intel Wi-Fi 6E AX211 supports WiFi 6 (802.11ax) standards and operates on the 2.4, 5, and 6 GHz bands. It also features two antennas and offers a maximum speed of 2.4 Gbps.

These components should work seamlessly with your existing setup, including the ASUS ROG Rapture GT-AXE16000 router. However, before installing the new components, ensure that they are compatible with your system's power requirements and that you have the necessary tools and expertise to perform the installation safely.

@Alptech Expert

Thank you so much for your reply. My XPS 8930 comes with a 460W power supply. Do you think it fulfill the power requirement?

Thanks again.

@GLK IT 460w is enough power to add a network card.

Its the processor and GPU upgrade when power supply limitations come to picture.

I don't think you should invest in both WLAN and LAN cards at one go unless you have a real use of both of them at the same time.

Its a desktop ..it will be sitting in one place. If your cable can reach there just upgrade the Lan card and if it can't WLAN.

Before you install an add-in Ethernet card, make sure you disable the onboard Killer E2400 network adapter in Device Manager first.  (There's no option in XPS 8930 BIOS to disable the onboard NIC.)

You probably want a CAT6 (10 Gbp/s up to 165 ft) or CAT6a (10 Gbp/s up to 328 ft)  Ethernet cable for the new add-in NIC. CAT6a cables have tighter tolerances, may have thicker copper wires, and typically have higher prices...

I would upgrade the Wireless to WiFi 7 as a future proof upgrade for now.

On my 8940 I took out the M.2 AX1650i and put in an Intel BE200 Wifi 7 card. There is a newer one as well now, an Intel Killer BE1750x... both are under $50 I recall on Amazon.

I get wireless with a WiFi 7 router 1.17Gbps down, from my ISP's 1Gbps service.

Equal in speed to the Ethernet cable I could also use on the XPS.

Thanks everyone for the reply. I finally brought an ASUS XG-C100C, as PCE-C2500 is no longer available around. Installation of XG-C100C was easy and it works good.
