Discussing CPU Thermal Paste

My CPU had been running at a high temperature.  I did a few things to fix this.  In the process of researching what to do, I learned about CPU thermal paste and learned that I should replace it every five years.

I don't know anything about this.

Does anyone have advice?  If just a dab of this stuff is needed then why buy a whole tube?
