R7615 NVMe u.2, PERC12 h965i

On the R7615 24x 2.5", it says "16x sas/sata, and 8x universal (NVMe Direct)", but I am forced to choose a PERC 12 H965i adapter.

I want to know, how will the drives connect? It says NVMe Direct, so does that mean direct to CPU?

I thought on this machine that the Universal thing meant it was going through the tri-mode PERC12 ?

What I would ideally like, is to have the PERC 12 / h965i, but be able to choose whether the NVMe drives go through the PERC12 or straight to CPU.

Also, the drives dell offer on the build page are a.. U.2, which I think means they can't be working with the Tri-Mode PERC12 ?

Please can somebody explain. I need to place an order very soon.

@DELL-Young E Hi, I have read that a few times. It does not cover the '24x 2.5 SATA/SAS & NVMe Direct' chassis. It only covers the 8x 2.5 NVME HWRAID and 16x2.5 NVME HWRAID.

The Cabling and Routing guide (https://www.dell.com/support/manuals/en-uk/oth-xlr7615/per7615_ism_pub/cable-routing?guid=guid-177f50ea-121d-4715-9f95-3ed4ea6207d8&lang=en-us)

clearly differentiates between 'u.2 NVMe' and 'Universal', but the online store build page shows it as '2.5" Chassis with up to 24 SAS4/SATA Drives including 8 Universal Slots (NVMe Direct), Front PERC 12". The cable routing shows 'u.2 NVMe' as going straight to CPU. but it is not clear what is happening with NVMe drives in Universal slots in Table 20. of the cable routing guide (24 x 2.5 inch SAS/SATA with 8 x Universal drives with FPERC12)

I would like to order a system with h965i and SAS disks, and at a later date, add some u.2 or u.3 2.5" drives for an array on the h965i.

It's OK, I got it now from the NVMe and I/O Topologies for Next-Generation Dell PowerEdge Servers paper.

I will have to order an NVMe-only system if I want NVMe through PERC12.

I will not be able to use SAS/SATA alongside.
