M640 NVMe Enablement
Hello,
I have an M640 node that, according to the service tag, has the SAS/SATA backplane.
321-BEVC : Chassis with up to 2 SAS or SATA Hard Drives (PERC required) MLK
I understand these systems support NVMe U.2 drives, but do I need to replace the backplane, ribbon cable, or anything like that?
Thank you

Hi,
Based on the M640 technical and user guide, the server backplane can only support either interfaces. Since you have checked the part# using the service tag, can you provide me the DPN# (321-BEVC is not sufficient), let's confirm the part support capability.
Technical guide Page 9 : https://dell.to/422IkbK
There will be 3 types of backplane.
6YFYN Kit Mechanical FPC with Backplane SAS, Mechanical SAS
GRHKR Kit Mechanical FPC with Backplane SAS/PCIe, Mechanical
PP4XM Kit Mechanical FPC with Backplane SATA/PCIe, Mechanical
Only PERC S140 supports NVMe, hence if you have any hardware PERC, you will need to remove it to enable onboard PERC S140. Page 19 of technical guide.
