Desktop not recognizing the power adapter

My Inspiron 3252 desktop is giving me an error that the power adapter I have does not meet the 65W requirement and that I needed to contact Dell and use a 65 W adapter, otherwise the performance will be adjusted then it immediately shuts down. The problem is that it IS a 65 W power adapter. I need to get on this computer as it has things stored from my son‘s father, who recently passed away. We’re desperate to get onto my old computer. He has music on there that he’s sang that we’re trying to recover

Chino is correct to imply that the power adapter needs to be replaced.  The original one even though was designed to supply 65 w power has probably degraded and failed power on test. I have two Dell adapter that fails too although they are able to keep laptop powered on just cannot charge battery.  You could look on eBay too for a used working adapter if pricing is better.  It should cost 10-12 usd

@Bg69  You said this is an "old computer". If it hasn't been used for a while, it's possible the motherboard battery died.  So you may want to replace that battery before going any further, if nothing else than to rule the battery out.  A dead battery might prevent the PC from correctly recognizing its power adapter.

If this isn't something you can do, maybe you have a geeky friend/relative who can help:

  1. Power off, unplug power cord from rear of PC
  2. Press/hold PC's power button for ~15 sec
  3. Open case and remove motherboard battery (check Service Manual for details)
  4. Press/hold PC's power button for ~30 sec
  5. Install fresh CR2032 3-volt coin cell battery (~$3)
  6. Close up and connect mouse, monitor and keyboard
  7. Connect power adapter and try to boot
