dell inspiron 27 7775 pointer freezing

Since a few days, my mouse pointer is freezing every 2 or 3 seconds which is more than annoying. I have tried everything to solve the issue. I first contacted the Dell Support who advised me to re-install the system with factory settings using the Dell OS Recovery Tool. The issue wasn't solved. Then I decided to re-install a complete new version of Windows from scratch. Nothing worked and I still have the issue.

Any idea of what could cause the problem and how to solve it ?

My system is Dell Inspiron 27 7775 desktop AIO with Windows 10 (no longer under warranty)

Wired or wireless mouse?  If it's a wireless mouse, does it need new batteries?

Is wired mouse (or wireless mouse dongle) plugged into a rear USB2 port on PC? (See back panel here.) Have you tried the other USB2 port?

When you did the clean install of Windows, if you installed any Dell software, eg Dell Help & Support, Dell Foundation Services, etc, disable them on Startup tab in Task Manager.

Thanks Ron.

My mouse is wireless (wireless Dell keyboard and mouse). I will try to disable all Dell sevices and let you know the result.

What happens if you use a wired USB mouse, does it hesitate too?

I have disabled all Dell software and I still have the problem. Unfortunately, I don't have a wired mouse to check. I'll try to find one and test it...

BTW, I have checked the "Safe Mode" and in that case, I don't have the problem.

If no problems in Safe Mode, that says mouse is working OK.

Try this:

  1. At desktop, open CMD prompt window, be sure to use the Run as administrator option
  2. At the prompt, type in: chkdsk c: /r and press Enter. Accept offer to run chkdsk at next boot and reboot. chkdsk will run before Windows loads so be patient.
  3. Back at desktop, open CMD again, as in #1.
  4. At the prompt, type in:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth and press Enter. Be sure to include a space in front of each / and note any error messages when that's done.
  5.  If no "unfixed" errors in #4, at CMD prompt, type in: sfc /scannow and press Enter. Be sure to include a space in front of the / and note any errors when that's done.
  6. Assuming no "unfixed" errors in any of above, reboot PC and see if that fixes the problem.

Hi, thanks for your help.

I have strictly followed your procedure. I didn't find any unfixed error in #4. Some errors were found but repaired (see attached screenshot, sorry, it's in French...).

Unfortunately, after the last reboot, I still have the issue.

After all these tests, I really don't understand what could be the problem !

sfc created the log file, in C:\windows\logs\cbs\cbs.log. Have you reviewed that to see if there are any unfixed issues?

If you haven't already tried, disable everything on Startup tab in Task Manager, except your anti-malware app. Then reboot and test mouse again.

I went through the CBS.log file, which is tricky because I'm not familiar with ! However, I noticed a warning but I'm not sure this is related to my problem:

I also tried to disable everything on Startup tab in Task Manager and reboot with no succes.

Seems like a failed Windows Update was identified. Don't know if it's related to your mouse problem, but you probably want to deal with this first.

There's a long thread here about exactly the same failed Windows package KB3025096 you have.  You can read all the details in that thread, but short answer is to open CMD window, Run as administrator, and enter this command:

DISM.exe /online /cleanup-image /AnalyzeComponentStore

If that says any components need cleanup, run:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup

When it's done, reboot PC and test mouse again. Like I said, no guarantees this will fix the mouse problem...

I have checked everything following your recommendations. I didn't find any error.

I tried once again to install W10 from a bootable USB. I noticed that the mouse is working well at the beginning of the installation process up to the moment where Windows asks me to connect to my Microsoft account. Then it starts to freeze every 2 to 3 seconds again (??)

I have also found a comment on the Web stating that booting on a SSD (which is my case) is not compatible with the option "System compression" . But I don't really understand what it means or how to solve the issue.

Anyway, thank you again for your help. I will contact the Dell Support and try to have my PC repaired by them...

Since this likely going to be a software issue, Dell is likely to charge you for assistance.

I don't think this is a file compression issue if the mouse starts freezing during installation after you're asked to log into your MS account. I'll see what my Dell tech contacts have to say...

I  found a couple of sites talking about mouse lags after a Windows Update, so have a read and try their suggestions, eg, here and here.

Post back and let us know if one of them gives you a fix that works because that info can help other users...

@RoHe

Hi,
I have tried every solution proposed (thanks for that). Nothing solves the issue.

If I summarize the situation:
- My system (DELL Inspiron 27-7775) is fully updated
- It has the last Windows 10 updates and Windows drivers updates
- My Dell drivers are fully updated with Dell Support Assist
- I have tried to re-installed the original Dell Windows 10 with factory settings using Dell support Assist
- I then have tried to re-installed a genuine Microsoft version of Windows 10 using a bootable USB device
- I have checked the BIOS version of my machine (it's up to date)
- The mouse is working well in Safe Mode
- During the installation of Windows 10, the mouse is working well up to the moment Windows asks for a connection to my Microsoft account.

- My system was working well last year. I did't use it for a while and I discovered this issue when I started it again after few month (with probably a Windows update).

My guess is an incompatibility with some Windows process or driver but I can't identify which one.
My last possibility is to contact the DELL support (and I am ready to pay for that) except if someone in the community has a solution.

I want to continue to use this machine which is still operational and in good shape !
