Blog Comments Disabled Temporarily Until 11-7

As I mentioned in my post earlier this week, we are beginning our data migration to our new site. That means we are temporarily disabling comments to all of the Dell English blogs (except for Your Blog, ReGeneration.org and DigitalNomads.com) until we can launch the new site on November 7.

Soon after the migration begins, we will create a board called Community Upgrade. I will update this post with that link when the board is live.

The Petabyte Age and the Connected Era - More Storage Please

Wired has a fascinating series of articles on its site describing what it calls the Petabyte Age.

According to Wired, “Infinite storage. Clouds of processors. Our ability to capture, warehouse, and understand massive amounts of data is changing science, medicine, business, and technology. As our collection of facts and figures grows, so will the opportunity to find answers to fundamental questions. Because in the era of big data, more isn't just more. More is different.”

Our related version of this concept is the Connected Era. The way people connect and communicate is changing, and changing the world. A truly globalized information technology infrastructure and those who build, run and use it are creating this new connected era.

Bottomline – storage plays a critical part in this ever expanding infrastructure. I’ve seen reports predicting that the amount of information created this year will surpass available storage capacity. I’ve also seen estimates that medium and large orgs can expect a 55% CAGR for file storage over the coming years.

To help customers plan, manage and protect their petabytes, we’ve just announced a series of storage consulting services. We also announced a partnership with GlassHouse Technologies to plan and implement DR plans.

Let’s get connected – just don’t forget the storage.

Hating IT Is Too Easy - Calling Jackie Chiles

Susan Cramm at Harvard Business Publishing has a post "8 Things We Hate About IT" that is now up on BusinessWeek.

She lays out the complaints that spawn such revulsion in management and end users. IT is too bureaucratic, too busy, too expensive and too far behind the technology curve. The last point is ironic - no?

Her next post is supposed to be the IT department's response to the charges.

Let's help her out - anyone care to lead for the defense?

So says Robin Harris over on his ZDNN Storage Bits blog. His position is that grossly negligent IT people need to go to jail - "with professional stature comes professional responsibility." Uncle Ben was on to something when he was talking to young Peter Parker.

He discusses what it means to be designated a "professional" and that there are consequences that come with that designation. After all - bad doctors, lawyers and investment advisors go to jail. Johnny Cash went to Folsom, but I think that was for something else...

His final question - and I leave it you - "do you still want to be a professional?"

Naughty Naughty! Cisco, EMC, Hulk and Maui

EMC World always stirs the storage pot, like yesterday's rumor that Cisco might acquire EMC or today's discussions where, as Storagemojo put it, Maui was "conspicuous by its absence." I liked Beth Pariseau's article for the happy graphic.

Ballmer: it was a friendly disruption

By now, you've probably heard about how some guy in Hungary threw eggs at Steve Ballmer yesterday. I thought his comment to get his speech back on track was pretty good - he said "it was a friendly disruption". I suppose it would have been more interesting if Ballmer had tried playing dodgeball with the guy or batted at them with a ruler. After Ballmer ducks behind a table, the guy looks like he makes an adjustment and tries to lob one in. He was no Al Hrabosky, that's for sure, even if he was a bit tilted. I'd like to hear Vin Scully make the call.

Paula and Paul and Peter honored as entrepreneurs

A few days ago I wrote (belatedly) about EqualLogic and Don Bulens being awarded as the top privately held company and CEO by Massnetcomms. Today I get to give props to Paula Long, Paul Koning and Peter Hayden, who were just announced as the Entrepreneurs of 2008 by the New Hampshire High Technology Council.

And for Paula, they should have also added a special commendation for "total ass kicker" too.

Our customer Jason Powell might have a problem....
