Mini 10 and Adamo Notebook CES 2009

For those of you keeping score at CES 2009, you’ve probably seen reaction in the blogosphere to a couple of new products that you can expect to hear more about soon: Adamo and the Mini 10. As far as Adamo, expect it later this year. Precision craftsmanship and design is the name of the game. For more on it, take a look at posts from Engadget—their live blog from today’s event and their hand-on article, Gizmodo, or Crave. Update: I just noticed that Brian Solis has posted some pretty slick Adamo pics in his blog post.

For the Mini 10, I can confirm some things that Gizmodo reported and a few more. For symmetry's sake, here’s 10 things about the Mini 10:

  1. Edge-to-Edge 16:9 HD 720p display
  2. Edge to Edge keyboard
  3. Built-in TV Tuner
  4. Built-in Mobile Broadband
  5. Built-in GPS
  6. Built-in 802.11n
  7. Unique multi-touch & gesture touchpad
  8. Exclusive gestures: Home Screen, Auto-Scroll and My Favorites
  9. Intel Atom Z530 for performance and battery life
  10. Expanded color palette and popular Design Studio images

A second update:  Here's a nice preview of the Mini 10 from Techmama Beth Blecherman. And one more update: Take a look at Rob Williams' post over on the Dell IR blog, DellShares. That post features a YouTube interview with Ron Garriques, who is the President of Dell's Global Consumer division. He briefly discusses the Mini 10 and the black and the white versions of the Adamo notebook. He also gives some insight into how Dell is looking to expand our global set of products to meet a variety of needs.

I’m glad to see some folks are pumped. That’s it for now. When I can share more details here I will.

Update: Below is a 20 minute audio-only clip of the January 9 session where Michael Tatelman and Alex Gruzen discussed these new products.

Also, I noticed several folks were upset that I included just the audio-only version. Inc. Magazine published a short video that includes the Adamo sneak peek.

I would not recommend buying the Mini 10. Though it is a sharp computer, if you happen to have issues, they are almost impossible to get resolved. Read on for the details.

I decided to write this post in the hope that the computer that I received over a week ago would actually be of use to me. I bought the computer for my wife for grad school. When the computer arrived, it seemed to work fine. The next day, white horizontal lines appeared across the top of the screen. The computer fully locked up once (like a system board lock up), and it just randomly shut down. I'm a tech person, I used to work at a help desk, I understand that parts are just bad sometimes. So, I call your tech support line. I speak to three different people. My call gets dropped during the transfer. Nobody can find my service tag number in the system. After over an hour on the phone, I'm told that they have to speak to another department that is currently closed and they will call me back the next day. Not ideal, but I'm still ok.

The tech calls me the next day. He says that he was too busy to get to my computer and that he will call me the next day after he has the chance to call the department that is currently closed. I ask to speak to his supervisor. I explain that this is unacceptable. The supervisor says that they will send a tech out to fix the computer in two days. The tech comes out and replaces the LCD. This fixes the horizontal lines problem, but now I cannot pick up a wireless signal unless I am directly beside the router. Obviously there is something wrong with the wireless antenna that is part of the LCD assembly. I start a chat session with Dell. I am disconnected 3 times during this (my internet connection did not drop, I was on my other laptop that can connect to wireless without issue anywhere in the apartment). Per the instructions of your tech reps, I reinstall the drivers and reseat the wireless card, to no avail.
Finally someone calls me. They ask me to run the full diagnostics on the computer. I oblige, knowing that this will not help. But, the hard drive fails the confidence test. This has nothing to do with the wireless problem, but good to know that in the week that I have had the computer, the LCD has broken, the wireless doesn't work, and the hard drive is bad.
I just spent 40 minutes arguing with a tech over chat who thought that the settings on the wireless router were wrong or that it is a software issue. Nothing changed on the software of the computer, nothing changed on the settings of the router, and my other computer is still able to connect. I asked the tech to escalate the problem several times and he ignored my request each time. How does one actually get Dell to fix a computer?

Just a quick update this week. In keeping with my new years resolutions, we added a Lightning Rod question

I am looking for a machine to take to the data center and VPN connect from the road. The Dell Mini 10 with the original specs would have fit the bill perfectly. 1024x576 is nice for a toy to give a 10 year old but not for any serious task.

Please don't let us wait another 2 months for a WXGA display and >1GB of memory (and Linux).

Thanks

Christian

I have a been waiting for the mini 10 to come out with all the bells and whistles. I have been waiting since Feb and will patiently wait unless i get talked into the Mac AIr. But I love the 10 looks just wondering if it will really be avaible with 2gb and gps and tvtunner? On that note can someone sell my why I need a tv tunner and gps on me? My husband keeps asking and dont have an answer.

Thanks

I tried to love the Mini 9 I bought recently.  I really did.  but alas, it was very lacking in key areas.  It was perfect in power and ability.  But the odd keyboard, too small resolution and glossy screen really killed it.  IF the Mini 10 has non-glossy 1380x768 screen, so far all other parts look very good.  Putting glossy screens on an ultra-portable is about a DUMB as you can get.  I also hope it goes above 1 gig on memory.  The Mini 12 has the same processor, but only goes to 1 gig.  It has to go above 1 gig.  2 gig would work, but more would be perfect.

I was speaking to Dell UK today and they've confirmed the release date to be Feb 27th.

So any more news on when the mini 10 is coming out?

So, these are going to run Linux too, right ?

Adamo = rugged thiness... Great job on those too, I really would want ton know about the cost and when it'll be delivered. Hopefully Dell Forum members will know, :)!

oztokyo: I'm glad to see you and several folks are interested in the Mini 10. I can't talk about the details at this point, but when we have more Mini 10 (and Adamo) news to share, I'll be publishing details here on Direct2Dell.

Dell Adamo really looks stunning. I hope it doest cost as much as sony vaio which has the same neat design.  Big Smile

Oops apologies for the multiple posts. I was being told each time that my attempt to post was unsuccessul.

Also ther formatting was much much tidier when I pasted it into the form....nice table format for the transcript.

Anyway, verrrry keen on getting some answers before I order this Dell Mini 10 from Tescos. I wan't the TV tuner, GPS and HD!!

I have never bought a dell before - only sony / voodoo, but the Adamo's design looks absolutely amazing and I cannot wait to get my hands on one!  Any chance of having them on display in any bricks and mortar retailers for a hands-on experience?

I am surprised by the lack of followup on Dells part. I was getting ready to pre-order the Sony Vaio when I saw the original update and realized this would be a better fit for my needs. I have owned several Dell computers in the past and have nothing but good to say about them and hope Dell will get on board and get us some more info or arrange for pre-order.

Sounds great. I wonder if you could clarify a couple of things? The slide Dell presented clearly says the Dell Mini 10 has a 720p display, presumably meaning at least 1280x720. Yet Laptop magazine (with a video of them playing with one) says the display is 1024x576. I'm assuming Laptop Magazine is mistaken, but this would be a horrible mistake if its true... That video connector on the side... again, Laptop says its HDMI. Is it? I'm betting its DisplayPort, allowing both VGA and HDMI dongles as needed. With no VGA support this thing would be dead for business presentations no? Can you confirm one way or the other?

Anyone know if the Adamo includes a built-in DVD/RW drive?

Does anyone know if the Mini 10 will have a SSD and how big it will be?

When will this be available for purchase and any prices yet? Thanks.

jervis961: Nothing right now.

Looks good. I can add adamo to my dell collection.

So when can we expect some real information on the Adamo line? I would have thought that Dell would at least give a little bit of info. Its assumed to have a fixed battery due to the pictures and I would think Dell could at least drop a nugget of info on that. Apple announced a fixed battery system and even released a video on the process used to develop it. Can you at least share if the battery is still old tech or something new (I'm still hoping Dell is the one jumping to Silver Zinc). Maybe some other info without revealing too much ( battery run time, boot time, ETC)
