Resolution for Inspiron Mini/Ubuntu Linux Partitioning Issue

Following up from my blog post from last week, we now have a simple and robust resolution for the drive partitioning issue on the Inspiron Mini 9 with Ubuntu Linux. Since some systems with 8GB or 16GB solid state drives (SSD's) only have 4 GB of space formatted, we needed a simple method to extend the existing root partition and filesystem to fill the entire disk. The solution we decided upon is to add the fix to one of the operating system packages, and push this package out to customers via the software update process, so that the resolution is relatively transparent.

For customers that regularly update their system software, this problem will be automatically resolved the next time an update is performed. For those that don't regularly update their system software, perform the following steps:

  1. From the Ubuntu main menu in the top-left corner of the screen, select System -> Administration -> Update Manager
  2. Once the Update Manager window loads, click on "Check", and enter your password when prompted
  3. Click on Install Updates to update your system software
  4. Once all of the updates are installed, restart your system when prompted.

During your system restart, the system partition will be resized, after which your operating system will have access to the entire drive. To verify that you this process is successful, from the Ubuntu main menu, select System -> Administration -> System Monitor, and then select the "File Systems" tab. Look for a line that starts with "/dev/sda2"; for a system with an 8GB drive, the "Total" column should list something above "6 GiB", while for a 16GB drive, this should list something above "14 GiB".

For those interested in the specific details, the fix for this has been added to the ume-config-belmont package, version 0.77.3 and later, and posted to the Ubuntu Mini apt repository.

Update: If you have already partitioned the remaining space manually, this update will not make any changes to your partitioning, and will have no effect.

you people who are not linux heads need to learn a few things. go to www.distrowatch.com or www.linux.org

and have a look around.

Yes updating from ADMIN(otherwise known as Root) will update anything that has been released as stable for ubuntu's

OS.

Installing urme-config-belmont won't effect anything  but what the app should do, if its already done noth9ing will happen.

There is always a way to manually install apps in every linux OS from the command line in Admin (ROOT)

If you need the install commands ask over at the fo0rums we'll get you going right

Gentleman,

I bought a lap top inspiron 1501 a while back.  It has been A NIGHTMARE TO GET THE THING TO WORK RIGHT SENSE IT WAS NEW.  I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND BUYING ONE TO ANYONE.

bruce: Sorry to hear that your Inspiron 1501 is giving you problems. If there's something else we still need to fix, please respond with another comment to give me a description of what's going on, and your service tag or order #. I won't publish it, but I will ask someone to contact you.

Thanks! This worked for me!

looks like it will not cause any issue.

Hey I realized this problem of no enough space on 1st boot of my mini9, spent (read: waste) lots of time w/ DELL service tech/service to no solution (after being bounced around dept after dept.) THEN, later that night about the 4th time booting up OS Crash and nothing worked to get it back, more time wasted with techs then finally convinced them to take defected mini9 back to fix and send back to me. I ordered my mini9 on Sept. 9! It's almost NOV! and i still haven't got my mini9. YES repair is finished got a phone call today, check tracking and guess what? DELL is senting my laptop to another DELL location in OHIO! so NOT to me! Already contacted DELL for the wrong address and again waiting for respond and w/o Mini9 yet. Mr. Michael Dell, I respect you and the company you build and have already supported you (made many purchases of computers every year!) and recommend to other people. You really need to setup a customer service for Computer-literated or IT grads and not treat everyone like they are stupid. Now we finally get Ubuntu Mini9 and it's time to upgrade to 8.10 yet I really doubt it'll be as easy for us DELL laptop owners.

Thank you for any easy solution to this problem.

I just downloaded the update and everything worked well.

Thanks again.

I've already done this using gParted on a live USB disc. Will installing the latest ume-config-belmont screw things up?
