More Ubuntu Linux Advertising?

Since I'm back in the saddle again... while catching up on some reading, I came across a post from the VAR Guy that I thought was worth spending some time on. In that post, the VAR Guy notes that we advertised a Ubuntu-based Inspiron Mini 9 over the weekend in some newspapers. I've done a bit of digging, and think those ads are US-based.

Since we launched Ubuntu-based consumer PCs back in May last year, one of the most common requests is that we advertise Linux more. Recent examples include ideas like Show more Ubuntu Pride from user meoblast001.

I don't mean to make a bigger deal out of this than it is, but the fact is that this is a small step in that direction. It's a small step, but it is a step.

We offer Ubuntu on select systems in several different several different countries. see this post for an update on that front. And for the Mini 9 Ubuntu fans out there, in case you missed it, check out Anne Camden's blog post and vlog that covers the custom interface that comes with Ubuntu 8.04 on the Mini 9.

If you want to browse the Ubuntu-based systems we offer, go to www.dell.com/ubuntu

Great job, Dell!

I haven't seen the news paper adverts. But the video that's kicking around is awesome. Dell did such a great job with the video, I just wish you guys would do more!

Is the version of Ubuntu remix for the mini 9 available for download anywhere?

"We offer Ubuntu on select systems in several different several different countries"

On selected systems ... yeah... take that literally. I am looking now for a netbook and checked and compared hard.  Then I saw that Dell not only offers a SSD Version with Linux, but exatly with Ubuntu!

But at least here in Germany, I was very disappointed to see that I cannot order the hardware which I want (1GB RAM, 16 GB SSD, 1.3 megapix webcam) without being obliged to put another 50 Euros on the desk for an OS which I do NOT want!!

OTOH when ordering the adapted Version with the Dell-Launcher (the Software I want)  I have to do without hardware features I am interested in:  lesser RAM, lesser Disk-Space, lesser webcam (and don't tell me you put weaker components in only because Linux don't NEED better ones - what a strange argument!!!)

Even when ordering the beloved hardware with the damn Redmont OS, I am not even able to download the special Dell Ubuntu but have to work out all the adaptions on the public version myself. (And yes, I know about the netboox remix: "recommended for experienced users with some coding experience only").

This is a shame!  This IS Microsoft pride! This is treating Linux people as lower class customers. Giving us a lolly so to keep having a foot in our door.

Why no mini 9 on the dell.com/ubuntu page?  I have to go to dell.com/mini which actually doesn't look right in Ubuntu even though it runs Ubuntu.

There was a flyer in the German computer magazine named c't (http://heise.de/ct), too. It made me order a Mini 9 with Ubuntu on sunday.

I would love to buy an Ubuntu Dell but it's still not released in Australia. Ubuntu has served me well for two years and the issue of security updates and others are second to none. Very good service and a good product. Come on Dell, in Australia, please.

Advertise Linux more as well as sell the Ubuntu Dells in Australia and in more countries.
