Kicking the Tires on Dell's Remote Access

Like a lot of bloggers, I'm online for many hours every day. I use my Dell-issued laptop mostly during the day XPS 720 on the weekend and off-hours. That usually translates into transferring files back and forth or via a USB drive or my Wi-Fi network at home.

I also take tons of photos and have a few family videos that I want to share with the grandparents. Sure, I can post to Flickr and YouTube and mark them private for friends and family, but that takes some work.

And that's where Dell Remote Access service comes in. Its purpose is to make it easy to share and stream files from a main PC to just about any device with an Internet connection. Jay Pinkert's got a blog post over on Your Blog that provides a bit more background. And for a more geeky but funny perspective on this, take a look at Todd Brannon's post over on In the Clouds. And while I'm on the subject, PC Magazine's recently published a hands-on review that hits on one of the main benefits: simplicity.

If this sounds interesting, you can get more information at http://dellremoteaccess.com. The full service costs $9.95 per month, but you can download the software and try out the full list of features for 10 days either from the site itself or by clicking the image below:

I plan to try it out. And later next week, after putting it through it's paces, I'll blog about my experience. Would love for some Direct2Dell readers out there to try it as well and let me know what you think.

I posted this over at JPinkert's blog as well:

Love the idea of being able to remotely access stuff on your PC back home... but not sure I'd love the fact that I'd have to leave my PC in full power on everytime I leave the house. Have Dell thought about using the remote access wake chips made by intel? I saw some press on this I think over the summer where they have figured out how to do Wake On Lan from outside the home which apparently means I could let me pc go into sleep/suspend and when I use a remote access program or service it would wake it up. Seems to me that in this "be green" mode of the world, that would be a good thing...use your service and be green. Just a thought.
