Dell XPS 1530n and Studio 15n Now Available with Ubuntu 8.04

Today is the day. For customers in the United States who interested in compelling notebooks with 15.4” Hi-def widescreen displays the Dell XPS M1530n and Studio 15n notebooks are now available with Ubuntu 8.04 factory installed. US customers can check out these systems and more at www.dell.com/ubuntu (or click on the Ubuntu image below).

Thanks again to the Linux community for the continued support (and purchase) of Dell systems with Linux pre-installed. Your interest and direct feedback enables better solutions on a broader array of platforms. Hope to see you at LinuxWorld!

I would like to see this aswell on latin american dell site. Specially with such a great deals like in the USA site.

How can dell take the time to get ubuntu working but can't be bothered to release vista 64-bit drivers for the m1530? Some products have 64-bit drivers and some dont. Dell, please clean house and get 64-bit drivers for all your products before you run around playing with linux. Most people (including myself) have used the m1330 64bit drivers with some precision drivers thrown in. 80% of the correct vista 64bit drivers are already available, it can't take that much time to put them under the 1530 and get the last 20% working (webcam, soundblaster audigy HD software edition).

and finally, please update your graphics drivers much much much more often. Newer video drivers are released almost weekly and can seriously improve performance. Quit forcing people to go to laptopvideo2go and risk messing up their PCs.

What about releasing this in India? The only thing that keeps me from buying this laptop is that I'm going to have to pay for Vista too. My needs are adequately met by Ubuntu and I don't have to worry about viruses, spywares etc. I hope Dell is making a note of the demand for Ubuntu pre installed laptops from all around the world and not only the US.

How about the Studio 17?  I was thinking about getting one and installing Ubuntu (and wiping Vista), except that the BIOS is only updateable from Vista.  If it was available with Ubuntu preinstalled, and with a BIOS I could upgrade in that config, I would buy one.

I'm very happy to see Dell preinstalling Linux on their machines.

Where is the m1530 with Ubuntu?  It's not on the site.  Only the Studio 15.  My credit card is waiting.

Nice guys!!! Keep on going!! Europe please too! And also get us NVIDIA graphic chipsets in the PC so that we can enjoy our Linux Desktop even better!!! GO GO GO !!!!

+1000000000000000 for DELL!!!

Offer Details section says: "Ubuntu 8.04 with DVD Playback"

But Tech Specs say Vista

Also the Design section is talking about some Dell Dock, video chat, which probably doesn't apply to Ubuntu version

Something needs fixin'

Dell Malaysia is not offering any Ubuntu System as of now.Why is the offerings always have to be US first? Why can't just launch it worldwide?Agreed with Alan Campbell why the need to restrict the market.Dell is not going to lose anything by having a worldwide launch.I like Dell product but the restriction of product offerings make me puke

I configured XPS M1530 2 days back with ubuntu & now its just gone.... both 1530 & Studio not available NOW..... Looks like Dell got the news out early without testing them completely :)

We want Latitude E-series with Red Hat.

(Sigh) Let me remind you... WWW stands for WORLD Wide Web. And, as many others are at pains to point out, the world does not end at the US border.

The UK, Europe, Asia and the Pacific are all valid points of sale. The idea of listening to your customers is brilliant- but by limiting the region, your implemetation is ludicrous...

Economy Of Scale predicts a bigger profit when you sell more of a given item. Since manufacture is done on an assembly line in Malaysia, costs are constant.

If you want to make a profit, you need to stop restricting your market.

links bwoken, makes me sad... :-/

I envision cool dell blogging folks versus the uncool web shopping experience team arguing about non-breaking links and web standards at arduous meetings

Please fix the links for customization pages for the M1530n & Studio 15n. They land to "We Need you to adjust your order".

Some price indications would be highly appreciated before you have the system customization pages up.

Have you released these machines or not?  I bought an XPS 1530n on Thursday and you lost my order.  Now it's not even listed on your site anymore, nor is the 15n.  Very frustrating!

please, think in Europe!!!!!

Studio15n: Where is the ATI and backlit keyboard?

prashant raju

so for us studio users who currently are stuck on vista where do we download the image/iso for the ubuntu release which will support the broadcom wireless?

fairly useless announcement if you can't follow through with providing exsisting customers with the iso.

Why is T5850 (2.16GHz) CPU the only avaialble option for XPS M1330? Why can't I get a faster CPU?

When is this going to be available in India?

Good news. I would love to purchase one, but I can't.....

Please release in

Australia

please.

Still waiting.

Australia Please!

Wait a minute—you didn't say these would only be available in America! How am I supposed to know when to believe your marketing?

That's a great news, but where is the ATI graphic card for the studio 15 ?

Dell is going right way.

I will call its Linux day when all desktop / laptops sold by dell shows selection of operating systems.. Lets customer select any laptop with optional operating system.. there should be minimum 2 choices. 1. Ubuntu (Linux)  2. Vista (Windows)

I want to buy 17" laptop. I bought Dell inspiron 1721 with vista and installed Ubuntu 8.04 the day i got it. Even though i am using Ubuntu 100%, Dell has counted my PC as Vista sell. I am sure there are thousand of users like me who are using ubuntu / linux but they cant buy Dell Linux system of their choice.

I think, Dell should work in this direction. I am sure, this will increase sell of Dell systems and bottom line.

When are you planing to release these options in India. Make it hapen fast. Give us peace. Thanks in advance.

When will you put up image files for Ubuntu 8.04 on the Wiki for others to download? I'm eager to get it :P

Curious about the 32bit vs 64 bit as well.

I have to admit I was looking forward to the Studio 15n but was disappointed when I could not update the graphics to ATI like in the Studio 15 (Windows) and that there wasn't the backlit keyboard option like its Windows counterpart.

Please tell me that those options will be made available. This is making me rethink if I should go forward with this new laptop or not.

I haven indeed read it sugarbear! Good news it is too. It's about time Dell made a bigger noise about Ubuntu. Good effort.

Now for my awekward question of the moment. Over on IdeaStorm there is an idea asking for Ubuntu on the Dell Studio Hybrid. Apparently it's not available because Ubuntu doesn't work well with the Intel X3100 graphics. But the Inspiron TM 1525 LINUX (N0852515) has Intel X3100 graphics.

So what gives?

a big THANK YOU!

Are these computers running 32 bit or 64 bit Ubuntu by default?

I hope aikiwolfie reads this.

Three cheers for Dell!  Keep em coming.

Looks great and thanks for the additional choice! And keep it up.

I have been holding off for a while now to buy a new laptop and am considering to buy a pre-installed Ubuntu laptop very soon.

Looks great!

Do you plan on making these new Ubuntu offerings available in UK and the rest of Europe shortly? The Ubuntu range is currently very limited in the UK and looking dated. We want to order more systems but the specifications do not meet our needs.
