New Dell Ultrasharp 2408WFP 24" Widescreen Display

Today we introduced the UltraSharp 2408WFP widescreen flat panel display. Following the 3008WFP, it is our second monitor that supports DisplayPort... while I was pulling together some details on this monitor, I was told that our 22" Crystal display does not have a DisplayPort connector. I updated that post. Now, on to the fun stuff.

We've talked about DisplayPort before, but to catch everyone up, it optimizes both panel performance and simplifies platform interoperability. Just like I said with our 30" display, the new 2408WFP is all about performance and connectivity.

The new display features HDMI, DVI, VGA, component, S-Video and composite video connections, and the 2408 also has a 9-in-2 media card reader and 4 high-speed USB ports.

Performance-wise, it features a quick 6ms response time, a 3000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, 1920x1200 native resolution, and TrueColor technology with 110% color gamut. If you really want to dig into color gamut details, you can take a look at this color chromacity explanatory chart from Georgia State University. Thanks to AnnaAtDell for that information.

The 2408WFP is available to customers in the United States for $699, the same price as the previous model it replaces. Bottom line, if the 3008WFP was too expensive or you didn't quite have enough room on your desk, the 2408WFP might just be the monitor to go for.

I am considering buying the 2408WFP to use a computer monitor and a cable TV monitor.  I have several questions:

1. Can I plug both the computer sound output and the monitor's HDMI sound out into my sound system at the same time?

2.  If I also get a tuner card, will I get a digital 1080p picture?

3. In both cases, how can I control the TV reception and picture?

Hi, Does the 2408WFP use HDMI 1.3 or not? Thanks.

I know this monitor is currently on backorder.  I'd be interested in knowing what other people's experiences have been with shipping delays, how long they have had to wait, etc?  Thanks in advance.

I'm following up on MoneyGuyBK's question about the DisplayPort. Do you have to buy a separate cable for that, or is this the new standard?

Ok, thank you Lionel.  You have my email I assume and you can always use the contact form from my blog.  When you guys think the issues are identified and resolved, I'll buy another one.  Love the 2407WFP I have.  It needs a partner.

Best regards,

Keith Combs

Hello,

What is Dell doing to correct the issues with the 2408WFP???  There are numerous threads at http://www.dellcommunity.com/supportforums/board?board.id=dim_monitor with a wide variety of issues.

I purchased one sight unseen because I have the 2407WFP and I wanted two 24" Dell monitors side-by-side for a great multimon experience.

Unfortunately, the monitor I received was returned because the colors were aweful, the brightness and contrast were not uniform, and it had a lot of distortion in the text as a result.  If I used an application like Windows Explorer to display an all white screen, the top half of the screen had a blue tint, and bottom half had a reddish tint.

I would really like to order another one, but not until I see some of the issues acknowledged and addressed.  The forum workers from Dell don't seem to be saying much.  Any insight on what is being done to address the problems?

Thanks,

Keith Combs

Keith: the short answer is that I'm not familiar with the potential issues that you bring up about the 2408WFP monitor. Let me take a look at it, and I'll either provide updates here or will have someone contact you for more information on what you saw with the monitor you returned.

Hi,

I've gotten one of these babies at my workplace and I must say its a wonder of to behold and work on.

The only problem I've had is that I so far have been unable to make the sound connector (or what it is called) work. Since I'm sitting with many people around me I need to use headphones if I want to listen to music and so far my screen doesn't provide me with that. If I plug in my headphones in the screen I get no sound from them but lots of sound from the actual computer (with not so glad eyes from my cooworkers.

Is there some settings that I'm missing or isn't this possible? If you have any solution write me a note and I'll make sure to check a back if I get it to work myself.

 Cheers

I'm in the UK and wondered why we have to pay $1,135 for the 2408WFP. Admittedly it's currently on 'sale at Dell's UK outlet, but still costs $842 compared to $699 for US customers.

I would love to know the info about mostly the Display Port... version and has anyone compared the difference between DVI and Display Port? I am waiting for Nividia's 9 Series cards to be release and maybe get the 9800 x2 or some other crazy card. Are there any requirements on video card power for this display? I'm not sure if my 7900GT 256MB is enought to run this effiently thanks

When Dell Ultrasharp 2408WFP will be available in stores in Turkey? I await this monitor in the impatience. Thanks.

Finally they released this 24" monitor. It is a Great New !!!

Lionel, may you please say if the HDMI is 1.2 or 1.3 and if the Displayport is 2.0?

And could you also let us know if both connectors are respectively HDCP Compliant (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) and DPCP Compliant (DisplayPort Content Protection).

My only critic to the 2408WFP is: " Where is the remote control ? "
I will always have to leave the comfort of my couch just to preset the video input in the 2408wfp  "Front Panel".
So, if I wish to select a different input source from a Component TV cable box or an HDMI game console, for example. I must have to stand up and do it manually. When I had to change between DVI to DVI or DVI to VGA no problem at all. But when we have a such great input choices the usability changes as so as the approach to the monitor installation probably going into many bed rooms.
Tanks

Any idea when will this monitor be available purchase in EMEA states? Romania, to be more precise...

Are any left-over 2407WFPs going to be made available? I've been waiting for those to go on sale, and since I really don't need all the extra ports of the 2408WFP, I figured I'd try and find the previous model to save some dough.

I've been waiting for this monitor for some time, or at least one of its cousins.  Will you produce the variant with the built-camera? If so, I plan to get two of these.  I can understand why you might not want to produce that option on the 30 inch as many of those are probably going into living rooms, but it seems to make a lot of sense for this one as it is definitely a desktop monitor.

 Crossing my fingers....

Lionel, I think I see a "DisplyPort" also.... am I correct?

Reason why your blog does not list that as a feature?

Peace

I'm really excited about this monitor.  Can you comment on whether it uses an S-IPS or S-PVA panel?  Thanks.

Specs show that DVI-D with HDCP, but HDMI doesn't have HDCP listed. Can you verify that it is HDMI with HDCP, and what version of HDMI is it (HDMI 1.3 hopefully).

Was watching for when this one would reemerge after January's...premature introduction. I think I'll need to buy one now.

Gabe: Woo hoo! Glad to hear it. How come I'm not surprised that you saw this in January? Must be the algorithm.
