Microsoft Releases Vista SP1

Last week, Microsoft released Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) to manufacturing. Mike Nash from the Windows Vista Blog team shared the news last week, and followed up with a second post that explains a bit more how Microsoft plans to make it available to customers.

SP1 introduces several improvements that customers will see, especially to battery life, performance, reliability and applications compatibility. In order to provide the best customer experience for our customers, Dell has already incorporated many of the most important fixes in our current OS load. Dell customers will begin seeing the entire service pack 1 on new systems ordered from Dell later in May this year. Additionally, customers should soon be able to download it from the Microsoft Windows Update. More information from Microsoft on testing and deploying Service Pack 1 is available here.

Dell recommends that users of Vista migrate to SP1 as quickly as possible. More details on this topic to come in the future.

I purchase my Insprion 1720 in April of this year 08 and I've had  problems since it arrived. Not knowing any better I allowed Dell  Tech support to remotely log into my computer, It has been down hill every since. Tech stated I was having software and hardware problems.

I tried to install the updates I received, but I kept getting error messages stating all updates could not be install.  I am hoping mad! Dell just sent ma a Studio 1735 today, it does not work.  I am so dissapointed with this company.   needed to vent

@ Denise

I'm sorry for the problems you had with that original system.  I hope there aren't any issues with the Studio 1735 but if there are let us know and we'll try to help.

Klaus,

You will need to completly uninstall the sigmatel drivers from device manager. Run the Vista SP1 and then reinstall the sound drivers. Take a look at what other users have done to resolve this issue on the Vista Community forum board below. What is the error message you receive when trying to install the SP1?

http://www.dellcommunity.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=vista&thread.id=58535

This is absolutely ridiculous.  It's pretty obvious that Dell isn't actually spending any time on this issue at all.  Vista SP1 has been out since March, and now it's the end of July and there is still no indication of a supported solution that will allow me to install SP1.  I bought an Inspiron 9400 over a year ago and there hasn't been a single Vista hardware driver update for my machine since January 2007.

Dell is clearly focused on new products, not supporting existing ones.

I've been a constant Dell customer for the last 10 years, but with this trend, that is likely about to end soon.

This must be a JOKE !!

Dell recomend user to install Vista SP1 and even after 6 month their "Engineers" has not resolved driver problems.

I have a Dell XPS M1710 where vista has given me nothing but problems. I even formatted the harddriven reinstalled with the "latest" drivers Dell could provide and still expirience programs to crash.

I cannot install SP1 due to  SigmaTel High Definition Audio hasn't been update since January 2007

MS Excel 2007 crashes regularly due to the bluetooth software (btsendto) and the  MS solution telles me there is a solution to the problem and direct me to Broadcom where I can download a patch. This patch are just not for the Dell hardware. They havn't  updated the software since Nov. 2006 (except for the BTW_on patch in April 2007)

The Dell Support center I have disabled as it is of no use anyway. It won't reconize the internet connection and keep saying that I am offline.

How long will Dell keeps neglecting it's customers ?

Have Dell no pride ??

Thank you for choosing Dell and have a nice day - yeah what a thanks you get.

I have an XPS 420, a very nice machine, but no Vista SP1 thanks to the incompatible Sigmatel audio driver. I wrote to Dell support asking for a status update and received the following on 7/20/2008:

"Thank you for contacting Dell Warranty Support.

Our engineering team is currently working with Microsoft, Sigmatel and other 3rd party hardware manufacturer for the SP1 drivers.

SP1 is new so there are still a lot of bug unknown.

Dell plans to release all SP1 at once and we do here at support does not have any updates yet on the date.

We will be informing all our customers once the date is finalized.

For now, we strongly suggest not to download SP1 to avoid complication.

Thank you for choosing Dell and have a nice day."

I have same problem with my Dell Inspiron 1525 ie. unable to install Vista SP1.

When my Dell Inspiron 1525 is checking for MS updates it will show all new updates that are available for download but it will not mention anything about Vista SP1.

After doing some research on web I have come to conclusion that there is some problem/clash between SP1 and drivers installed for hardware (Audio- SigmaTel etc) supplied by Dell computers.

So, in summary it will be up to Dell and Microsoft to resolve this SP1 software installation problem.

So, lets hope that Dell and Microsoft can soon (say by August 2008) come up with some solution for customers who are using Dell computers and still waiting for their Vista SP1 to be installed J through Microsoft Updates.

I made a purchased from dell, but somehow I can't follow through because Dell won't apply it to my preferred account. I know I have an account with Dell, What's the deal???

Of course I meant Studio 7 (1735) not (1635).

Decided that as the headphone socket works there must be a problem with the 2 physical 4-ohm speakers.

Well, I took delivery of a Studio 17 (1635) laptop yesterday (Vista Home Prem +sp1) and could not get any audio from it at all, from the speakers or either headphone socket (it has dual sockets). I updated the bios from A02 to A03, did a couple of Dell QuickSet updates to the chipset, and that seemed to enable one of the headphone sockets for sound.

Am going to try R171788.exe when I get home from work but I hold out no real hope.

This should have worked straight from the box.

I have the same problem with my XPS M1710. Is there any update about the SIGMATEL drivers? It is so pathetic that after several months, I still cant upgrade to SP1.

So I have been checking here to see if anyone has found a fix or driver for the Inpiron 1521. I would really love to get SP1 on my computer since it is really buggy at the moment and I was hoping that SP1 would fix it. If anyone knows anything new about the SigmaTel driver for the 1521 I would be extremely grateful.

Thanks E.P.  I tride the following driver SIGMATEL_STAC-92XX-C-Major-H_A06_R182475.exe on my E521 that was not upgrading to SP1 and that did the trick.  I had to wait about 10 mins after installing the driver and rebooting before windows update offered SP1, but that did the trick.

Dell's support was worthless.  The driver recommended when I entered my service tag was from may 2007, and thie online chat 'help' pointed me to the sept version, neither of which worked for me.

I cannot understand why Dell is not showing a solution to this problem on their web site. It would appear that the latest driver for SigmaTel high defination audio CODEC is dated 9/7/2007 version 6.10.0.5609, which is the one I have installed on my Inspiron 1520. I am reluctant to install SP1 if it is not being offered in the Windows Update.

I hope that I am able to resolve this matter in the near future.

R182475 should work fine for the E521, as it even lists it as one of the supported systems when you launch the executable to extract the files.  There are actually a whole series of systems that are supported, let the website says the drivers are only for the Optiplex 740.  I don't understand is why this file isn't available when I select the Dimension E521 from the support site.  Microsoft's KB article says that some older Dell drivers (prior to the Dec. '07 cutoff) already fixed the problem, but clearly the most recent available on the E521 page are not in that category.

"Dell customers will begin seeing the entire service pack 1 on new systems ordered from Dell later in May this year."  There are only two days left in May.  Is there a revised schedule for SP1?

George Harwood, Dell has posted the "SIGMATEL_STAC-92XX-C-Major-H_A06_R182475.exe" file on the Dell support site a few days ago which has Sigmatel HD Audio drivers version 6.10.0.5866.  Dell says it's for Optiplex 740 desktop computer but it may also work on your XPS 410 computer and for the Dimension E521 machine Lou Tognan & pschulze were using.

Well I did not experience any problems with Vista SP1 on the Dell Inspiron 640m/E1405 laptop I'm using.  And I used the very big full-standalone SP1 package to install Vista SP1.

Stephen Daniels

I posted a link to a solution for the SigmaTel driver that is blocking SP1, but the blog moderator must have rejected it for some reason...

Did anyone notice Dell hasn't got updates for most drivers since early 2007 when Vista first came. I am sure there have been revisions and perfection to many drivers since then and DELL website shows no update. Even drivers like Intel 965 Graphic Chipset has been around since January 2008 and Dell only updated there website in end of April 2008. I see lots of other drivers it seems they have updated much. I suspect all these initial release drivers of 2007 are going to cause issue with SP1 on DELL machines.

It is a big disappointment to know that DELL is way behind when it comes to supporting SP1 as compare to ACER, Toshiba etc.. I tried installing the sp1 on DELL 1720 notebook and all my 4 attempts have been failure...

Any insight will be great on how to upgrade to SP1.

Note: On the side I have been getting Windows Vista "Blue Screen" of death quite often and I have already exchanged 3-4 systems and they all exhibit same "BLUE Screen". Has anyone else experienced this I notice  this might be due Intel 3100 Graphics driver or something....

Hi:

I am trying to install SP1 on DELL Inspirion 1720 laptop. I am getting error message and also getting Windows "BLUE SCREEN" of death when system is trying to install SP1. I am able to install this on other computers like ACER...DELL is the only system that is having issues with SP1. Can someone please help here!!!...

I even downloaded the new driver for Intel 965 Graphics chipset.(version .1409)  Is there anything else I need to install.. I am applying sp1 on factory settings computer...

Any ideas or help will be greatly appreciated!!!..

I suggest that Dell exert strong pressure on IDT to get Sigmatel driver updates quickly.  SP 1 remains unavailable to me. I have an XPS410. This is a one year old computer. All required and recommended Vista updates have been applied.  I have gone through the possible causes for SP 1 not being available and the only one that applies is the SigmaTel driver 'Stwrt.cat - published 12/17/07 or earlier'.   If Dell would like to sell me another computer, I suggest that Dell start leaning on  IDT and get me an updated driver ASAP.

This SigmaTel driver issue is quite ironic - Dell urges everyone to install Vista SP1, this driver prevents the update, yet I can find no comment from Dell as to a solution or workaround. Am I missing something??

Mitch, did you install ALL Windows Vista updates including the Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool?  I had to install this tool since it was the last and only update I needed to install and then Vista SP1 finally showed up at Windows Update.

To answer Dan Sullivan's question of certain drivers being distributed thru Windows Update, yes and no.  For sigmatel audio drivers, NO.  I've checked the Windows Update and Microsoft Update Catalog sites and the latest Sigmatel HD audio drivers they have are 6.10.5462.0.  Sigmatel, now acquired and owned by IDT, has not submitted any updated Vista SP1 compatible drivers to Microsoft so that they can be posted at Windows Update and Microsoft Update Catalog.  So I wouldn't expect any updated Sigmatel HD audio drivers at Windows Update in the near future.  For other device driver updates such as Intel video at Windows Update, maybe.

For Steve Prestage's situation, try the drivers from the R171788.EXE file on the XPS M1710 laptop.  They have Sigmatel/IDT audio drivers version 6.10.5614.0.  The drivers from the R171788.exe file seem to work for many Dell laptops, including the Dell Inspiron E1405 laptop I'm using.

I recently received an XPS720 in 2008.  Yesterday, Windows released SP1 for Vista.  When I go to updates windows, it does not show.  Widows is stating that if a person does not see the SP1 download, it means some drivers need to be updated.  I have downloaded everything from dell.. All my drivers, that I can tell, are up to date.  Any ideas?

 Mitch

Still waiting for some type of update on the Sigmatel HD Audio driver.

Is there any hope for getting this?

Steve Prestage

Ditto for the XPS M1710 - Need SigmaTel HD Audio Driver higher than 6.10.5511.0

I have the same problem.

I need new SigmaTel Drivers for the E 521. I think in few weeks there are new drivers in the download section.

I'd like to install SP1 on my E521 (Vista Home Premium) system, but apparently Microsoft is not delivering the update because the most up to date Audio drivers provided by Dell are not compatible.  (They are certainly not available on the drivers  download site.)

Can anyone from Dell provide any information concerning when Dell plans to release SigmaTel Drivers for the E 521 that are compatible with Vista SP1?

Dan Sullivan

When will Vista SP1 for the Latitude D620 be available? Right now the drivers for both the sound card and fingerprint reader are out of date and prevent getting SP1 from Windows Update. I think this is the case for a lot of Dell portables, Will these drivers be distributed via Windows Update?

Hi guys, Sigmatel driver of Vista in my Dell XPS M1210 has v6.10.0.5343.1. That is also the driver in your download website. Microsoft wrote in their http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=948343, the following drivers is problematic (which means Vista SP1 will not be offered thru Windows Update): SigmaTel • For x86-based computers: Stwrt.sys - version 6.10.5511.0 or earlier • For x64-based computers: Stwrt64.sys - version 6.10.5511.0 or earlier I hope you (Dell) will release a new driver for Sigmatel audio or else, users will not receive Vista SP1 thru WU. Thanks!

I have an XPS 1330 which operated perfectly, BEFORE I installed Vista SP1.

The nvidia 8400M GS video chipset requires new drivers for SP1, which are not available form either Dell or nvidia.

I now have to run my XPS1330 in safe mode, uninstall the drviers, then restart, every time I want to use it.  VERY frustrating.

Hi to you all. I am so frustrated with Windows Vista and the fact that with XP, every programme I have worked, and with Vista there are compatibility issues. After spending many DAYS trying to sort out problems I am considering asking for my money back. Its so sad because I think that the ispiron 1525 is a fantastic Lap Top but I am afraid Vista has let the system and me down.

The sort of problems I ma having are associated with older programmes. Yes they should all be upgraded but I just havn't got the time, patience or money to

Rest of the wold has to wait SP1 about a month or two :) http://shop.it.ee

Microsoft said that it will be available to new volume licensing customers beginning March 1. Existing Vista consumers will have to wait until mid-March, when the download becomes available through Microsoft's Windows Update Web site.

Windows Vista users who have their systems configured to receive automatic updates will get SP1 automatically delivered in mid-April

Windows Vista has been a big problem since I received my Dell Inspiron1525 Notebook.  I have made 3 calls to support and have had problems with the system.  I hate this vista and hope and I don't have any further problems with it or else the system will go back (i've only had it 3 weeks.

Unhappy camper here!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just have to wait for Mircosoft to make SP1 available to the public at large.

Thanks for this info. I bought a new Dell 3-4 months ago, and while Vista has been less flaky than I assumed it would be (and feared it would be after seeing the Internets' buzz surrounding it), hopefully this will clear up a few issues I have run into, particularly in the area of app compatibility.

Hi,

I am concerned by the fact that the new range of Latitude E laptops will come out when MS decides to stop offering XP as OEM, and the option of downgrade from Vista Business to XP.

Is DELL supporting the petition to preserve XP longer?

I can't wait to see the new Latitude range, but if it has to be with Vista, then I might not be in such a hurry...

Regards,

C.
